Was yesterday the worst regular season loss in franchise history?

In recent memory the Victor Cruz game was the worse without a doubt. Jets had a shot at the playoffs, lost that and the last game and the Rex era went into a free fall.

Meanwhile, the Giants would have missed the playoffs if they lost that game and instead went on to win the Super Bowl (one positive was beating the Pats).

No, I consider it a success because Darnold didn't get badly injured. This season is lost because the personnel on this team are no good. I don't care how good or bad Gase is. You can't do well against any other team with these players and don't forget the injuries. The Jets have lost all their linebackers.

2011 finale vs. The Dolphins deserves an honorable mention. I forget if we were in a win and you're in scenario, but that game was ugly.

These meaningless games where I already know the team sucks don't bother me...plus this collapse isn't all that unexpected I mean we hired Adam Gase as head coach

    Plenty of worse games.

At least this one wasn't on national tv...

depends on your definition of the worst game... was this the game that hurt the most? Definitely not for me. I'm well beyond the point in my life when Jets losses hurt or affected me in any way. This was one of the most embarrassing losses. I'd say this is one loss that made me believe that the Jets had no hope in the near future. I'll even go as far as saying that Darnold will end up being a wasted draft pick. This organization is dysfunctional at every level and no young quarterback will be able to develop in this environment. The loss that hurt the most and is still the worst, IMO, is the AFC Championship against Denver in 1999. We had the better team, we had a 10-0 lead in the 3rd quarter and choked down the road, like the typical Same Old Jets. The Broncos went on to beat the Falcons in the Super Bowl, the same Falcons that we had destroyed in regular season. That was the year and the Jets blew it.

Plenty worse games have been played. Yesterday should be the trigger for Gase' firing, but I know it won't happen.

It's a really bad loss if you have come to the conclusion that Sam is going to be a bust.

Ha. Maybe if this is like your 3rd season watching the Jets and forgot like every other game this year.

It's pretty close. I've been a fan since 1984 and I can't think of a time where the Jets performed worse in a game. There are tons of games where I felt worse after the game was over, but I can't ever remember a team that was this bad on the field. Kotite's teams never had a game this bad. The worst team we lost to in Kotite's 1-15 season was the Giants - and we only lost by 7 points and they at least finished with 6 wins. This Miami team may go 1-15.

This is an untalented team and it is poorly coached and they make stupid mistakes.

Sadly this is probably the correct answer. Really it's at least two different categories.

Worst loss in terms of meaning - the end-season losses to Rex, the Seahawks with Favre, the 24-0 in Houston, etc...and worst in terms of pure embarassments - yesterday, the buttfumble game, Vance Joseph covering Tim Brown on Sunday Night Football, etc.

This one was atrocious becuase of the opponent ... but also not so bad if it gets this buffoon fired.
So many horrendous losses vs the Dolphins.

One that sticks out in my mind is Rex's first game vs Miami.
We had a 4 point lead with time winding down, and Miami had a first down on our 5 yard line.
They ran 4 times and finally scored with seconds left in the game ... while Rex still had all 3 timeouts in his pocket! When asked why he didn't use his timeouts to save time for the offense to score, the jackass responded with "I thought my defense would stop them".

Quite possibly the worst 2:00 of coaching in NFL history, as well as the dumbest answer in the history of answers.

EDIT ... just checked it out. We actually had a 3 point lead which makes it even worse because they were obviously going to tie it at worst. They were on our 4 yard line with 1:06 left. Scored on their 3rd down play with 10 seconds left. Lost 31-27.

I remember that one well. I also remember the rematch three weeks later and the two kickoff returns by Ginn and a fumble return TD by Jason Taylor to account for their 3 TDs in another loss. That's one season when the Jets were swept by Miami but could honestly say they were the better team. Just bad breaks....

I think Darnold is going to be fine with better protection, weapons, and coaching. But there will come a point where he can't be fixed......

thanks to pro football ref and youtube we could dust off the ‘70s volumes for a few gems, these in the blowout category.
56-3 pats 1979, they put the game on a special anniversary ticket recently.
43-0 mia 1975 i remember on tv muddy shea like a funeral at end with final score. jets came in 2-2 with a ‘shot’ so we thought, then lost another 4 or 5 straight after this. i think this was beginning of end for joe.
41-7 pats mnf 1976 the infamous mnf game where gary puetz was laughing on bench and alex karras says he would punch him out on his team.

I'll always remember that game for Ginn burning Revis for a 53 yard TD. Felt like he was a thorn on our side that year as he returned 2 KO's for TD's in the second game.

You can check me on this, but I think the Dolphins had about 120 yards of Total Offense in that game.
Leave it to the Jets to hold an opponent to 120 yards and still find a way to lose.
I remember another game vs Buffalo when we had about 300 yards RUSHING and still lost.
These things are simply unheard of outside of Jets Nation.

I've been watching the Jets for almost 40 years from the 1980s to now...…..there are so so many memorable losses with their own special indignities. There was a blown 21-0 lead to the Falcons at Shea in the pouring rain.....There was the Eagles and Raiders back to back in 1993....blowing a 21-0 lead to Bubby Brister at home and then blowing a 17-0 loss in L.A. when the referees mismanaged the clock giving the Raiders enough time to score the winning TD with no time left. Ugly horrible home openers that only gave you a hint of what was to come ( Just like this year ! ) There were actually countless blown leads - those are what hurt the most. But upon thinking about all 40 years I would have to agree that for the regular season the worst ever loss was the fake spike game and the ramifications that followed. That game not only blew a tie for first place and ruined the day. It did more than even ruining the year. It ruined the next 2 1/2 years......
