No one tabbed McNeill as the most complete LT coming out. He had major flaws as a pass protector including poor technique and lousy footwork. I liked McNeill coming out, but anyone who felt he was a better overall prospect than Brick was just kidding themselves. Yes, McNeill is the better run blocker...but LT's are not paid the big bucks to run block..they are paid the big bucks to keep pass rushers at bay...which is why Brick was considered the superior prospect.
What I'm trying to say is at this point is that the JETS could have done way better during the draft. I'm not trying to knock D'Brick but McNeil is hands down better then he is. No one is calling D'Brick a potential Rookie of the Year candidate, they are calling Marcus McNeil that. D'Brick still has many more things to improve upon in his game before he is seen as an All-Pro as McNeil is already given credit for. All I am saying is watch the JETS game and how often they run from the left tackle position this Sunday against the Vikings or during any other game and watch how much the Chargers run off left tackle this Sunday night against the Chiefs.
It comes down to would you rather have had.. Leinart(or Cutler) Mangold McNeil or DBrick Mangold Clemens Only time will tell, still to early to make definitive conclusions..
Let me give you a glaring stat about McNeil and D'Brick. Marcus McNeil had a stint where he did not give up a sack in 42 straight games and his team averaged 200 yards rushing a game. D'Brick had a stint where he did not give up a sack during his junior year and he had a mobile quarterback to help him out at times. I don't know how McNeil has bad footwork when he doesn't give up a sack in 42 straight games.
That's very true VISION, it all comes down to who would you rather have had but the JETS made their decision and there is nothing we as fans can do but critic the picks.
Why thank you Dierking II, but I am very knowledgeable about what I am talking about. When it's comes to the draft, I know who the best player fit for my team is. D'Brick wasn't high on my list and I didn't want to blow his bad game out of proportion but it was Aaron Schobel. When you watch game film on players it's easy to see weaknesses and tendecies and D'Brick has not corrected his. Looking to next year's draft, Joe Thomas and Levi Brown are better LT's than D'Brick as far as there whole body of work when it comes to playing the LEFT TACKLE spot.
I handled OL player scouting for a well known draft web site...and I can tell you that Levi brown is nowhere near the prospect Brick is. Thomas is def. more complete, but again, does not have the rare athleticism that brick possessed when he came out.
Every good or great running back has a good LEFT TACKLE. D'Brick your young but your just not there yet with all the hype you were given. Sure you have the personality and smarts but that hasn't translated to his play on the field for the JETS.
Wow, so why didn't they hire you as the GM for the Jets? Gotta love the self aggrandizing. Look at the O-Line McNeil is on. Now look at the line Brick is on, with 1 over-the-hill OG, a mediocre OG, and a below average RT. SD has an outstanding FB to help with run blocking, and the Jets have Askew.
No..every good running back has a good fullback and RIGHT TACKLE. Certainly there are exceptions, but Most RB's prefer to run to the strong, or right side to gain their yards. This is why the more physical or mauling Tackles play the right side where they can concentrate on the running game and wont face the premier pass rushers(usually) who commonly maintain the left side. Consequently, Left tackles are usually superior pass blockers who are paid the big bucks to keep the QB's blindside clear of pass rushers.Yes, if they can run block it is a plus...but it is not as emphasized as it is on the strong side.
With all the hype D'Brick was given, as of right now who is better, the fourth overall pick LT or the 50th overall pick LT. I've been talking about McNeil since before that draft and at this time he is way better than D'Brick. But I have not said Mr. Ferguson will be a bust, he just needs time to work on his game which is lacking more than pass-protecion. But right now, McNeil is hands down better, even if he is blocking for LT, a future Hall of Famer.
You think these things might be related? Stats like that have some meaning, but they need to be taken in context. You can't pass judgment and compare offensive lineman after 3/4 of one season, especially when the the quality of the surrounding players is so disporportionate.
Jonathan Ogden, Pace, Walter Jones, Chris Samuels, Bryant McKinnie, and Flowzell Adams to name a few. And now Marcus McNeil all these LT's have paved the way for there running backs.
Bro, it's 13 games into his career and your putting him into canton? i guess that's because you "know", what else do you know old wise one.:breakdance:
Samuels and Adams are considered only Average run blockers, and when Jones and Ogden came into the league they were average run blockers who improved. None of the tackles you listed w/ the exception of McKinnie are known as elite run blockers.
I would love for us to draft an mauling RT to compliment Brick. I was dissapointed to hear that jake Long wasnt coming out as I think he'd be perfect. I like Blalock for his strength and versatiility but i see him as more of a RG due to his height(only about 6'4 and not a great wing span for the RT position). I wouldnt mind a guy like Levi Brown at RT where I think he'll have more success in the pro's than he would at his listed LT.
