Why was Gase hired? What qualified him for the job? How long must one live with an error before recognizing it for what it was?

    Chris Johnson is a moron.
Gase kept Peyton's coffee at the right temperature.
You'll have to ask Chris Johnson.

Except the question has never been rhetorical. It is a real question demanding real answers asked of those who are willing to ride the status quo. It is a question for every guy who supported the hiring of Gase and has still not faced reality. What qualified Gase to be hired? Until this question is examined to see where things went so wrong the Jets are doomed to repeat the experience.

I don't think there are very many guys left who haven't faced reality. But to answer your question, Gase's qualifications were OC of the Broncos, OC of the Bears, and HC of the Dolphins. In Denver, he rode off Peyton's talent. In Chicago, he kind of sucked, but it was only one year. And in Miami, he avoided a terrible record by going 20-4 in one-score games. Plus Peyton called the Jets and recommended Gase. Ultimately, Chris fell for it and hired Gase. That's about it really. We'll see how long Gase lasts, but that's up to Chris and maybe Douglas, depending on what kind of GM Douglas actually is. No way to know as of right now.

For at least fifty years the common thought on resume writing is you don't just list where you worked but what you accomplished while you were there. Has the entire Jets organization missed this little nugget?

I'll rephrase - what were the accomplishments of Gase that caused the Jets to hire him?

As an aside, the first thing Douglas needs to do, and he's already weeks overdue, is find a viable backup. Darnold should have been on the bench before the third quarter ended last night.

Denver: #1 and #4 in total offense, 2 AFC West titles, 1 Super Bowl appearance
    Chicago: not much really
Miami: 23-26 record (better than Bowles), 1 playoff appearance

Considering Chicago and Miami didn't have good QBs, that isn't a bad resume. If you give Gase credit for Denver's offense (which he doesn't deserve) and don't look at Miami's point differential or offensive rankings, he looks like a decent hire. And Chris isn't the type to look too deeply into things. So he hired Gase.

Were those things because of Gase or in spite of Gase? Did Manning have something to do with it perhaps? Did Gase make any team or unit he was with better than they were without him? Certainly Miami got worse every day with Gase involved.

When you fall into the trap of just being better than Bowles, you have failed the test.

Colts with Peyton was 10-6 team. The year after 10-6, Manning went out with the neck surgery. Consequently, Colts went 2-14. In short, Manning was good for 8 wins alone. So having Manning during Gase's tenure with Denver should have been looked with a huge NUGGET of salt. Gase's performance afterward only confirms this doubt; he sucked at Bears AND Dolphags.

This is completely different from Bill Walsh and Belicheat. Joe Montana in his first year starting posted 64.5% completion ratio along with 15 TD/9 INTs. And he was slighted from Cincinnati job not because he was incomptent; Paul Brown didn't think Walsh was mentally tough enough to handle HC responsibility. Belichick? He got kicked out because he dropped the city favorite (Bernie Kosar) from the lineup. Not because he sucked at his job.

Gase? He's been sucking all the time, unless he was freeloading on a HoF QB.

It's been 3 games with his star QB.

    Is it really an error?

Or is it more on how bad this roster was constructed by Mac and Douglas is trying to salvage what he can to improve the roster throughout the season?

If he losses the team, regardless of how bad it is he should be fired. If they get off the mat, play hard and show improvement, particularly Sam he's going to be here at least another year. If Sam continues to show a complete lack of basic mechanics he may never work in the NFL again.
