I'm still trying to figure out what Gase has done in his career to earn a HC gig? His claim to fame is being the OC during Peyton Manning's best statistical year.

    Peyton Manning before Gase:

    Super Bowl Champ
    Super Bowl MVP
    9x Pro Bowler
    5x 1st team All Pro
    3x 2nd team All Pro
    4x NFL MVP
NFL Offensive Player of the Year
    2x NFL Passing yards leader
    3x NFL passing touchdown leader

We know. There's a reason almost nobody here wanted him before he was hired. But we have to give him a chance. Having said that, as you can see from the post-game reactions, he has a very short leash with us.

Gase’s playcalling reminded me of the Schotty days, which was by all means terrible.

But also when you have an offensive line that’s complete garbage against a top 3 defense, you really have no choice but to call short and simple plays.

Too often, position coaches or coordinators get built up to way more than they actually are, simply because their paths crossed with a great coach or player. Look at Kliff Kingsbury; he has an unsuccessful run as the head coach of Texas Tech, but because he happened to have Patrick Mahomes and (for a short time) Baker Mayfield on his team, he's labeled a "QB maker" and "Offensive genius". We've done the same thing multiple times before Gase. We picked up Bowles because he rode the wave of Bruce Ariens' successful defense. We did the same thing with Eric Mangini.

The johnsons listen to Manish too much. He should never have been hired in the first place.
What makes anyone think itll be better this time around?
    Whatever. Jets gonna jet.

Play calling has to consider risk or chances of success. As you point out, the Bills have a top 3 defense. Our starting OL had practically no practice time and literally no preseason game experience together. We know that OLs take time to build chemistry and gel. I'm sure that Gase was being conservative yesterday trying to protect Sam and not get him seriously injured. I expect that if we were in Gase's position, had seen every practice, and knew that the OL was not in sync, that most of us would have similar strategies yesterday. It maybe the same or very similar until the OL can get in sync.

Mac really screwed this team. He had the opportunity and the cap space to upgrade both the OL and CB positions and practically ignored both, signing only Poole, trading for Osemele, and adding Compton as depth via FA. Mac could have signed Matt Paradis, and any number of FA OL. At CB, he could have signed Logan Ryan, Bradley Roby, Ronald Darby, Darqueeze Dennard, Bryce Callahan, Rashaan Melvin, Trae Waynes, or others. He could have drafted a CB and an OL or two other than Edoga. He had 5 years to fix those positions and failed.

One cannot make chicken salad from chicken shit.

Whats upset me the most is that I knew Gase wouldnt necessarily be a good coach, but I thought he would take Darnold to the next level. I have not seen it yet. This guy has to mentor him and let him play to his strengths (which is kinda what he said). Browns defense is a bit less daunting and he better not coach scared next week.

If the OL isn't playing any better, then he'd better stick with a more cautious approach. It won't mean a thing if he opens things up, we beat the Browns, but lose Sam for an extended period of time.

Worst case scenario with Gase is he doesn't work out and we get a new head coach.

What frightens me way more is what happens if Darnold is not the guy--I'm not going to even go there but we all better be hoping and staying optimistic that he is. Danrold not working out would set us back years. We would have to spend precious draft capital trying to find that guy again lose free agents in the mean time and let the talent we do have (Mosely, Adams, Herndon) fall out of their prime.

Not only the above but his MIAMI teams got worse the longer he was the coach there.

I agree that Darnold not panning out would set us back, but it's too early to judge one way or another. His last 4 games in 2018 were mostly good, now he needs to be that guy on a consistent basis.

lets see. the bills waited until the 4th quarter to expose the jets weakness at cornerback.

without cj mosley in there, the run defense was also exposed.

the offensive line had at least 2 weak memebers , center and right guard, get exposed.

the possibility of an 0-7 start is very real.

and don't think that a loss at miami, a tanking team, is out of the question

despite how they looked yesterday, the giants actually are also another very possible loss.

douglas just got here but gettlemen had a clear advantage over mac in the last two drafts.

the jets are only slightly ahead of miami in the rebuild but a year or more behind the bills.

I don't agree with the poll but I also don't like that you are getting this much heat. Don't be intimidated. You are a good poster.

24 hours ago the TGG poll had the Jets going 8-8 or 9-7 (not sure what you thought because you didn't vote on it). One loss by a point to a team we were favored to beat by 3, and now we're one of the worst teams in football? I'm pessimistic too but there's a difference between saying we aren't a playoff team and the Gase/Darnold pairing is concerning versus putting us closer to Miami than Buffalo.

As for the poll, I think if Gase doesn't improve on Bowles's 5-11 standard, he gets canned. Because of his time in Miami, he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt that he's still learning. Couple that with an easier schedule, a more expensive roster, and a more experienced QB than last year, and there's no excuse for having another Bowles-type season. And if Douglas keeps Gase because they're buddies, then that tells me Douglas cares more about good feelings than he does football. Not that I think any of this will happen.

    Why isn't 0 and 1 a poll option?

What would it tell you about Douglas if we go 5 and 11 and Douglas keeps him because he thinks Gase has the right approach and the roster he was handed sucked?

I suspect Douglas likes being an NFL GM. He inherited a crappy 5 and 11 team with a crappy, by NFL standards roster. Douglas may well be a crappy GM who makes decisions based on personal friendships rather than professional judgements. Regardless what we do or what his decision is I also expect Jets fans to want to fire him after Mac's team goes 5 and 11.
