Two reasons why he could end up one and done. 1. He got canned at Miami for not getting along so his leash is much shorter than a first time coach. 2. Gase nade a huge power play that involved embarrassing the owner to force him to fire either himself or Mac by having a temper tantrum at the draft andmoving his chair into a corner away from Johnson. While this may have resulted in a net positive in Douglas Johnson will likely remember this behavior if things get ugly this year. The bottomline for Gase is Darnold. If Sam is getting better Gase stays if not he will be gone quickly. If we start 0 and 7 Williams could take over as interim.
I can easily see him losing the locker room if this thing devolves into a 1-7 or 0-8 start, which it very easily could. The earlier Christopher Johnson realizes he made a mistake, the better. Not that I have any confidence that he can fix things either, but what we saw today was unacceptable.
UPDATE: In Mosely's post game interview he said he doesn't anticipate missing next week and doesn't think he needs further testing. So hopefully this is just a tweak that responds to treatment. Tough loss today boys, but lets not hang our heads--we have a lot to be happy about going forward. The misstakes of Mac and roster deficiencies showed today, but luckily we don't have hto worry about him anymore.
I don’t think he will lose the locker room because I don’t think we have a lot of drama queens on our squad. No OBJ’s, no Antonio Browns. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was too at first. But the more I heard about him, the more I started to have doubts. The guy from Baylor would have been interesting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
But he does have one of those Type-A, I know everything personalities that, when things go as poorly as they could here, tends to turn people off. Time will tell, of course. He also has a team that's basically two separate teams in one (the offense vs. the defense), which is further accentuated by the way he's set his coaching staff up, with Williams as basically the head coach of the defense. If one side is outplaying the other consistently, there could be a divide there as well.
It's mainly poor players that is the problem. If the Jets had a decent place kicker, they win. If they had a decent offensive line, they win. If they had depth at linebacker, they win. If they had decent cornerbacks, they win. If they had a pass rush, they win.
I thought Gase was hired to make Darnold better because he is supposed to be some sort of QB guru..is it me or did Darnold look worse than in any game he played last year?
If the Jets had a decent place kicker,.......we did but Maccagnan let him go. If they had a decent offensive line..........we don't because Maccagnan virtually ignored it for 5 straight drafts. If they had depth at linebacker................Maccagnan confused Darron Lee with Matt Milano. All we really have to show is Jordan Jenkins. If they had decent cornerbacks.............see above answer for decent offensive line If they had a pass rush........................see above answer for decent cornerbacks. Green Bay had that issue this past offseason, but they dont have Mike Maccagnan involved & therefore addressed it very well. I intend to blame Maccagnan for this season,.............and maybe next as well. The lack of talent & depth on this team is the direct result of the past 5 (count them = 5) drafts.
While I agree with you that trading Darron Lee for a 6th round pick made no common sense, - I can't agree about a 5th round rookie looking like dog shit. Gase's first crack at GM decisions was not good. Only took 1 game to prove it. I had no problem w/D. Lee playing special teams only. He would have stepped in w/the Avery Williamson injury anyway. Doesn't mean we would have won the game yesterday, but it exposed our lack of depth when we had some previous experienced ILB.
I totally disagree. Gase's disagreement with the owner in Miami has nothing to do with his relationship with Chris Johnson. Also, Gase did not embarrass Chris Johnson. Chris Johnson did that to himself. He admitted that he hadn't been paying close attention, but once he started,he realized that there were serious problems/issues with Mac. He admitted that he waited to late to start assessing Mac's performance. I think the team would have to be a complete flop, losing every game or 90% of their games, Gase and Williams would have to have a huge public blowup on the sidelines, and/or Gase would have to scream at Chris Johnson the way he did to Ross in Miami. Particularly with his good friend Joe Douglas the GM, Douglas is going to give Gase every benefit of the doubt. The Jets were lucky to get Douglas, and Chris Johnson knows it. He's going to support him and go along with what he wants/decides for at least a couple of years.
How's he gonna do that when Sam was getting constantly pressured and sacked on the short routes? Stretching out the field yesterday could have gotten Sam seriously injured. You gotta remember, that yesterday was the first time the starting OL has played together. They didn't even have that much practice time together in camp due to injuries to Winters and Osemele and Kalil coming in at the last minute. Kalil maybe had 5-10 practices with the rest of the starting OL.
If they have a decent offensive coach, they win. That was the biggest reason for the loss along with the Kicker.
I wanted McCarthy also and it safe to say I would have taken an unknown over Gase , the guy has a body of work and it aint good
The panic and negative comments in this thread, the game thread, and maybe another thread are ridiculous. Some of you need to get a grip. It was one game, and the first time our starting offense played together. Sam had a bad game. Bad days happens to humans and Sam is human. If the Jets play like this for the first month or two of the season, then I can understand all the negativity, but it's one game, and the starters really didn't have preseason to get ready. Offenses all over the NFL were out of sync and bad yesterday. We have new systems that the players are still adjusting to, and a lot of new players. With a solid kicker, we win yesterday. With a better OL we win yesterday. We knew going into this season that our OL was going to be shaky at best and that our CBs were going to be bad. That's why I thought the idea of going all in on this season was ridiculous. This is not a SB-caliber team, and most likely is not going to make the playoffs. I don't know why some of you are acting so shocked and surprised that they were so bad yesterday. We're going to have to settle for watching Sam progress this season, the offense being better than it has been (if Gase really is an offensive genius, and the jury definitely remains out on that), and watching the team play harder, smarter, and perhaps getting more TOs on D than in the past. Progress, maybe even baby steps. That's what this year is going to be about. It's going to take Douglas at least one, if not two or three offseasons to turn this team into a top contender.
