Leaders will always rise to the top and shine. You can't just hand that out. It doesn't surprise me one bit to be honest - since he walked in the door I remember hearing about how big of an impact he was having on the field and in the locker room.

I think you're confusing team captains with game day captains. Rex would always do stuff like have three ex-Pats act as game day captains for the coin toss when playing the Pats, but it was just as a subtle jab for individual games. These are the season-long team captains. Though as mentioned, Rex did disastrously appoint his own captains in 2011, which was the Holmes year. Pretty sure I read somewhere that these captains were player voted.
