50% make rate from beyond the 50 is considered good. This guy seems shaky beyond the 40 and that's an issue. There were a handful of guys last year with 15 or more FG beyond the 40. Look at the make rates on some top kickers. The common thing is they NAIL kicks between 40-49 and are better than 50% from beyond the 50. Lutz 40-49 11/12 50+ 2/3 Meyers 40-49 10/11 50+ 6/7 Mason Crosby 40-49 11/15 50+ 5/7 Kaiami Fairbarin 40-49 12/15 50+ 4/6 Dustin Hopkins 40-49 10/12 50+ 4/5 The fact that we had such an accurate kicker from distance and Mac let him walk is ridiculous. The guy with the lowest % last year, Chris Boswell at 65% had the following: 40-49 5/10 50+ 1/1 I have zero confidence Bertolet can even match Boswell's awful stats from last year. He does not belong on an NFL roster, a CFL roster, and XFL roster or even a pop warner roster.
This whole kicker situation was discussed at length a few weeks ago when camp opened. There were numerous posters who suggested Mac was right letting Myers walk and that kickers were a “ dime a dozen “. I’m talking at least five or six posters ......now look what’s happening.
No, it is not too much to ask, hence why I said I am not defending his misses. Although I would be a lot more concerned if these were misses from 30 yards out.
Bertolet will most likely be canned, but I don't expect his replacement to be any better. One thing Gase said, we were late getting on the field for 2 of those 50+ yarders. We even got called for delay of game on one of them. Messing with kickers rhythm is not good, and shouldn't happen. It's like we called time outs on our selves to mess with his head. Plus we added 5 yards to one of his deep kicks. Kickers are so hot and cold, it's really impossible to predict with any certainty. Look at that pro-bowl kicker the Bucs (?) landed last season who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Or the Bears' top kicker who kept doinking balls off the cross bars. Or Myers who had a career year last year out of the blue for the Jets. Bertolet has a killer leg and the god given ability to knock it through. I say keep him for the start of the season and see if his head is on straight. If he stinks up the joint for real, we can bring in another kicker at any time during the season.
Funny but if any GM wastes a mid pick (4th/5th) on a kicker, the fans go insane...."why waste a pick on a kicker? they grow on trees" lol. get out a ladder and start picking!
If he stinks up the joint for real he could cost the Jets a chance at a playoff run, just like the Browns kicker that screwed that team last season.
Interesting developments with the Vikings kickers. Kaare Vedvick, who they just traded for, has been 1/4 on FGs since getting there while Dan Bailey had a good night. Vedvik apparently not doing great as a punter either. I wonder which gets free: https://vikingswire.usatoday.com/20...-himself-from-kaare-vedvik-in-kicking-battle/
