After the Barr situation, I don't think either Douglas or Chris Johnson would be willing to take that risk with Clowney, and rightfully so. He's just not that good or worth it. Clowney has been in the NFL for 5 seasons and has only played in all 16 games once. He's never had over 9.5 sacks and for someone who supposedly (according to one poster) is always swatting and grabbing at the ball when he's tackling the ball carrier, he has only forced 5 fumbles in his NFL career. He's also nothing special dropping into coverage. He's been healthier the last two seasons only missing one game, and to his credit, his sack numbers have increased and his tackles have been consistent the last 3 seasons.
it's clearly risky. I for one feel a whole lot better that our current regime is making the decision than Macc I am not excited about the move if the Clowney we get is what was demonstrated in Houston. (not a bad player at all but not the guy who was touted) Instead it would have to be something where our GM and CS see how to unlock the Clowney that was drafted (i.e., a monster) Also, someplace in the back of my mind is the notion that our odds of drafting a guy like this going forward will be near zero. If the team improves (which I suspect we will) our first round picks will be more aligned with drafting quality CBs, OL etc (which we also happen to need)
But he still doesn’t get the bidding war he wants. He has enough leverage to get to a team he approves of but not enough to demand the highest contract.
I think the Jets 1st priority in getting talent should be drafting top offensive line talent. Anything that interferes with that goal in next year's draft should not be done.
I stand corrected. I remembered it that way, but I was wrong. Just looked it up. His sophomore year was spectacular but in his Junior year he was accused by the sports media of not playing in some games in order to protect his draft prospects. His injuries were questioned. While I would not blame any player for dodging games now (because I feel the college football system is often crooked and corrupt) back then I felt like he was dogging it. So, I owe Jadeveon an apology. He probably was not dogging it, and if he was avoiding hurting himself more, good for him. I still don't want the Jets to be the ones to "pay the man". (I love that expression - as if these guys aren't paid at all until they break the bank)
Possibly not, but if he refuses to sign the tag that team might just release him and settle for the 3rd round compensatory pick that they'd probably get for him unless they signed other big ticket FAs.
The Texans don't even have a GM. Bill O'Brien is trying to do double duties and Clowney has them backed into the corner with no way out. its a tremendous opportunity to rip Houston off and get a heck of a pass rusher.
Now that the Jets have a legitimate franchise QB, their top priority should be to protect him. Save top picks to draft offensive lineman. Brady has played into his 40s b/c he's always had good offensive line protection.
This is how this is going to go down. The team he is traded to is going to have a handshake with Clowney in a new deal. He is going to understand that if he renegs he is going to get tagged and have to deal with all this again. Once that is set the team will work out compensation for the Texans. The Texans are going to have a choice of taking what they can get or dealing with Clowney’s holdout until the report deadline for Clowney to accrue a season . They will reach for the highest conditional pick they can get from the team Clowney approves of. It’s going to take a level of trust on the player and the acquiring teams part which makes it complicated but they will both have enough incentive to make it work.
3rd rounder which becomes second rounder if Jets re-sign Clowney. Fair all the way around. Lets do it
Ya let's trade for a dude who by all rights is a bust, guy was supposed to be some pass rushing phenomenon, and isn't by and standards, be a typical Jets move to trade for this guy.
IF we end up trading for him, there will be a lot of factors to consider...obvioulsy what we give up, how much we pay hi if we etend etc. Where he was picked has absolutely zero consideration here though. The Jets and any team would evaluate Clowney's play for the last 5 years not what his play was SUPPOSED to be
Mac yes. Bowles , I think was gone no matter what. They didn’t think he was right to develop Sam. Mack doesn’t change that .
If we had fired Macc the same time we fired Bowles, do we still get JD as our GM? Did we need Gase to get JD or could it have worked with McCarthy??
Pro-bowler the last 3 seasons with an all-pro to his name Banged up early in his career but the narrative that he’s a bust or somehow not a very good player is complete garbage Really hope we go out and get this guy...he would help our defense immensely
Let him go to the Dolphins. Hopefully he improves them just enough that they get 4 or 5 wins every season and keeps them out of reach of a top QB draft pick. Also known as the Tannehill Paradox. When Brady dies of old age, the AFC East is ours.
...or ya know, the Jets could do something to take over the AFC East besides waiting for Brady to retire. Like Idk, trading for the top pass rusher available.
Except we dont know what the level of his interest is. Did he reach out to start negotiating a deal or did he just reach out to get an idea of what theyre looking for and is only interested if he can be had on the cheap? For the right price I'm in. But only something cheap. Hes past the deadline, trade for him and you cant sign him long term. He'd be a one year and FA deal.
