Much rather trade for a top flight CB. I’m trying to think of what we would send to Texas that would make sense for us. Drawing a blank.
Would definitely rather use the 2nd to bring in a CB, provided one is on the block. I just don’t like Clowny’s contract situation. The possibility of losing that kind of draft pick for a 1 and done guy in a year where we’re a fringe playoff team just doesn’t sit well.
You'd have to assume that any team trading for Clowney has already met with him (like the Dolphins have). If you're giving up a 2nd that means you've gotten a handshake longterm commitment which obviously means nothing, a la Anthony Barr, but at least you're assured the player is on board with the direction of your franchise. The Texans are in a shitty position for this reason exactly. Will a team get any kind of assurance from Clowney at all? And even if so will they give up a 2nd? I personally would because I think he's a longterm answer and a top tier one at that.
I'd be surprised if Clowney is willing to come to any handshake deal. He knows he could make a fortune in FA in 2020 where several teams would probably be bidding against each other.
One of the teams will be the Jets though and would likely be offering him massive money in 2020 anyway. We have over $50 mil with rollover money included and don't have to dole out many huge deals (if Robby wants a huge deal, hopefully they'll let him walk or trade him).
I''m on the fence regarding moving for Clowney. As talented as he is, he's just never materialized into a dominant force on D, and that's with the benefit of teams doubling Watt. I think between the draft capital and contract he will want, it might just be too much. Certainly wouldn't hate bringing on Clowney, but team could benefit more making a move for Trent Williams or trading for a CB (or both)..
If we end up making an impact move elsewhere I won't be upset that we passed on Clowney. We just need to finally grow a set and start being aggressive when it comes to building a team (smartly, obviously). Look at the teams who win... they go out and get their guys. The Eagles spent their money, traded for impact players and because they did that, they became a destination. The Bears are doing the same thing and their QB isn't even good. The Pats go get guys all the time. The Chiefs are wheeling and dealing. Long story short, when you don't have a ton of talent that you've drafted you go out and get talent. Williams, Clowney, and the mystery CB all fall into that category.
The downside outweighs the upside in this case. Mack earned his payday. Clowney hasn't yet. I say yet since I admire his talent, but remember, he's a guy who sat out his senior year of college to protect his value. I'd be concerned that someone thinking that way loses his drive for dominance once he's paid in a BIG way. We have too many big checks to write soon. Clowney doesn't deserve to be high on that list.
I think you are overestimating how much cap space the Jets will have by a large margin. For starters of the players listed on the roster at present, we will have 43 FAs. Of course a number of those will not make the final roster. I'm guessing that at least 14 of that number won't make the final roster cut this season (Catanzaro and Clark are already gone). That still leaves around 29 FAs including R. Anderson, Beacham, Winters, Shell, Kalil, Compton, Montgomery, Siemian, D. Brown, B. Powell, D. Burnett, D. Thompson, B. Qvale, and Q. Adeboyejo (if the latter 4 make the team) on offense, and L. Williams, Poole, McLendon, J. Jenkins, D. Middleton, Miles, Hewitt, Copeland, Luvu, A. McClellan, S. Anthony, M. Cooper, and B. Kaufusi (if the last 3 make the final cut). That's 5 starters on offense, including 4/5s of our starting OL, and key backups, and 4 starters on D as well as key backups. Also our P (either Edwards or Darr), K (Bertolet) and LS (Hennesy) will also be FAs. We're not gonna have the cap space to pay Clowney, re-sign our own FAs, and be able to upgrade the CB, OL or WR positions in FA.
I feel like we JUST did this a few months ago when talking about this past offseason and here we are with Bell, Mosley and Kalil.
he did not sit out his senior year of college. all he did was declare for the draft after his junior year like hundreds of players do, including Jets QB Sam Darnold
I'm not in favor of trading for Clowney under the current circumstances and once again mortgage the farm, hamper our future rebuilt, and most importantly, potentially impact Sams development.. For one thing he is not a K Mack, an absolute terror in the defensive front and a game changer. He is talented , but so far an underachiever. Secondly he is at best a one year rental that could very easily use us as a stalking horse, push the value up to max price, and then flipping us and signing with a SB contender. No thank you, I have seen enough with the likes of Barr and Cousins (thank God) that even after we bend over they sign else where. I say fuck that, and lets control our future better. If we want to trade, LT and CB for the long haul is where our priority needs to be. The days of compromising the future to fill a need at all cost must stop now. If not, no GM will be successful on a long term rebuild program with fewer and fewer picks and too many highly paid free agents.
Which is what he’s doing right now I believe, so there’s precedent for him not to do it in the future. Yea, no thanks.
