With Cutdowns looming, I thought it might be good to start a thread on roster moves.

    https://www.ganggreennation.com/2019/8/13/20804454/jets-sign-cb-marcus-cooper-cut-te-nick-truesdell

The New York Jets have signed veteran cornerback Marcus Cooper, who was recently cut by the Detroit Lions. To make room on the roster for Cooper the Jets cut tight end Nick Truesdell for the second time in about a week.

Marcus Cooper is a 29 year old, 6’ 2”, 195 pound cornerback out of Rutgers University. Cooper was originally drafted with the 252nd selection in the 7th round of the 2013 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, but he never played for the 49ers. Cooper’s rookie year was spent with the Kansas City Chiefs, and it was arguably his best season in the NFL. In 2013 with the Chiefs Cooper racked up an impressive 19 passes defended and three interceptions. Cooper was unable to come close to that kind of production the next two years with the Chiefs and he moved on to the Arizona Cardinals in 2016, where he became a starter and had another fairly impressive stat line, with 11 passes defended and four interceptions.

That 2016 season would be the last time Cooper impressed. Cooper moved on to the Chicago Bears in 2017 and saw limited action, then spent 2018 with the Bears and the Detroit Lions while barely seeing the field.

This signing is unlikely to solve the Jets issues at cornerback, but perhaps Cooper will be able to provide something better than the rather underwhelming assortment of players the Jets currently have at the cornerback position. You never know when a guy might catch lightning in a bottle and turn back the clock to his best years. In any event, this is the opening salvo in what is likely to end up being multiple moves in an attempt to improve the alarming situation the Jets find themselves in at cornerback. Welcome to the Jets Marcus Cooper.

If we were the Yankees, Cooper would end up leading the league in interceptions. Something like 10 INTs, or 100 RBIs in baseball.

Some quick info by looking him up

Jets made a run at him in 2017. he signed with the bears for 3 years 16 million.
He began the season as their starter but was supplanted to nickel back and by week 6 suffered a back injury. he only played 1 year

2018 they released him and resigned him weeks later, then eventually cut him in November. Lions claimed him off waivers. he remained with them in 2018 then resigned with them march 2019. he was released yesterday

Overall some red flags and also some positive notes.

Once again a good depth signing but probably not much more than that. Better back-up material than what's currently on the roster.

This is why I love Douglas. Something happens and he immediately moves his ass to patch up a hole.

    Yep agreed

Reminds me of Seahawks at the beginning of their run of excellence

They had a zillion roster moves year 1 and at the time I was like wtf these guys are crazy!!!

But Carroll and company left no stone unturned

    (And drafted like beasts)

I can definitely see how Macs glacial, passive nature just totally rubbed Gase the wrong way. There was no way that could work. We have guys now that burn the midnight oil and have a sense of urgency rather than just shrug and walk away with no plan B when Anthony Barr spurns you at the last moment, or just roll with Jonotthan Harrison at center and think that's ok

Looks like the Eagles lost their second and third QBs in back to back weeks.

Do we dangle Siemeon out there as a chip for one of their many corners ?

Yes. If we could keep Falk AND get help at cornerback somehow I'd be elated with that move. That'd be too good to be true honestly.

    Jets Sign LB Albert McClellan
    5
By MacGregor Wells Aug 17, 2019, 8:50pm EDT

In the wake of Avery Williamson’s season ending knee injury, the New York Jets have signed free agent linebacker Albert McClellan.

Albert McClellan is a 33 year old, 6’ 2”, 235 pound linebacker out of Marshall University. McClellan was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. McClellan spent the first year of his NFL career on the Ravens’ practice squad before making the 53 man roster in 2011. He became a starting linebacker for the Ravens in 2012, but lost his starting position by 2013. McClellan has been primarily a backup linebacker and special teams player in the NFL, spending substantial time as a starter only in 2012 and 2016.

McClellan tore his anterior cruciate ligament and missed the entire 2017 season before coming back briefly with the Ravens in 2018. The Ravens cut McClellan midway through the 2018 season and the New England Patriots signed him. McClellan played the last 7 games of his 2018 season with the New England Patriots as a special teams specialist.

Albert McClellan has been known as a top special teams player throughout his NFL career, earning PFF first team All Pro honors for his special teams work in 2014 and 2018. At 33 year years old after spending most of his long NFL career as a backup and special teams ace, McClellan is unlikely to replace Avery Williamson as a starter at inside linebacker. However, he may provide decent insurance as a backup and he should upgrade the special teams units if he makes the team.

CB/S Derrick Kindred the latest secondary addition to Jets
The team waived CB Montrel Meander to make room
    5:33PM

The Jets continue to reshape their secondary this season, as GM Joe Douglas brought in CB Derrick Kindred off waivers on Tuesday, the team announced.

Kindred rejoins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who he worked with on the Browns for the past two seasons. A former fourth-round pick by Cleveland back in 2016, Kindred had been working with the Colts this preseason, but he was waived by the team this week.

The 25-year-old has 42 games of NFL experience, where he's started 17 times. Last season, the TCU product tallied 45 combined tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one pass defended.

The corresponding move for Kindred joining the Jets was cutting CB Montrel Meander. Coming out of Grambling State this past season, Meander is a wide receiver looking to make a transition to cornerback. He started with the Raiders before the Jets picked him up in June.

Cornerback has been a position Douglas has shown interest in improving. With Trumaine Johnson currently out with a hamstring injury, he brought in Marcus Cooper, an NFL vet, to add some more depth. And just as he said in his introductory press conference, he has sifted through the waiver wires to see who he can bring in to improve the roster.

Jets GM Joe Douglas brings in Avery Williamson's replacement
LB Stephone Anthony comes in with Jets ties in Gase, Vitt
    Aug 20 | 9:44PM

The Jets unfortunately lost LB Avery Williamson for the season after he suffered a torn ACL against the Falcons in preseason Week 2. But GM Joe Douglas was quick to fill his roster slot on Tuesday.

The Jets announced the signing of LB Stephone Anthony, a four-year NFL vet and former first round pick back in 2015.

Spending the past two seasons with the Dolphins, Anthony has Jets ties with head coach Adam Gase at the top of that list. Having played with the Saints for his first two seasons, he also knows linebackers coach Joe Vitt.

Anthony, a Clemson product, had a great rookie season where he totaled 112 combined tackles, one interceptions, two forced fumbles and five passes defended. However, his role recently in the league has diminished due to injury.

Last season, Anthony played a full 16 games for the first time since 2015, but he only tallied seven tackles in those contests. He'll be fighting for a larger role with the Jets -- granted he makes the team.

Neville Hewitt has the upper hand on the depth chart, as he'll likely fill in next to C.J. Mosley on the first-team defense in training camp.

Despite 'very attractive offer,' Jets WR target Dontrelle Inman reportedly signs elsewhere
The offer from the Jets "impressed" the sixth-year pro
    By Garrett Stepien | Aug 20 | 8:32PM

Despite what was reportedly a "very attractive offer" from the Jets, veteran wide receiver Dontrelle Inman instead chose to sign with a different NFL team in the AFC on Tuesday.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the sixth-year pro was "impressed" with the Jets' pitch, but will head back to his former team as he signs with the Los Angeles Chargers.

"Inman strongly considered them," Rapoport said of the Jets, who are likely to carry six wide receivers on the 53-man roster under first-year head coach Adam Gase.

After he signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent in 2011, the Jaguars waived Inman, who spent the following three years unsigned. His NFL career took off with the Chargers, spending 2014-16 with them when they were still in San Diego.

He totaled 105 receptions for 1,454 yards and seven touchdowns in his first three years with the Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers. Rapoport said Rivers "played a big part" in Inman's decision to re-sign there.

A reunion: Free agent WR Dontrelle Inman is signing back with the LA #Chargers, source said. They made an offer that stood as he took visits. The #Jets made an offer, too, but the pull QB Philip Rivers played a big part. So he’s back.
    6:55 PM - Aug 20, 2019

Inman began 2017 with the Chargers in Los Angeles (four games) before the team traded him to the Chicago Bears (eight games) for a conditional seventh-round pick. Inman, 30, signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 -- where he last played -- with 28 receptions for 304 yards and three touchdowns.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder started 2019 with the New England Patriots on a one-year deal before they cut him Sunday. His career numbers feature 158 receptions for 2,101 yards and 11 touchdowns.
