This one I believe is from that 62-28 win we had over Tampa. Basically the year before the Bucs had us beaten in a game but wanted to get James Wilder some kind of record. So they let the Jets score a meaningless TD (literally Bucs players backpeddled into the endzone as we scored) then got the ball back and got him the record. Jets got pissed and next time they played just totally annihilated Tampa (in a game we trailed 14-0) We had 55 points at the end of the 3rd quarter and decided to call off the dogs somewhat. But they legitimately could've scored 70+ points that day. And I wish they did
It is the 62-28 game. Wilder however did NOT get the record the year before. TB tried very hard, they let the Jets score to save time ( Just as you described ). However TB themselves ran out of time and Wilder was stopped short of the record ( I don't even remember what exactly the record was ). The Jets cursed at McKay the Bucs coach as he walked off the field - it was his last ever game. Quite a way to retire eh ? Let the opposing team score so you can try to gain more yards in an absolutely meaningless game for both teams. Also for BrowningNagle that is not McNeil in the picture it is Johnny Hector. But still a good picture and a day worth remembering. EDIT: I was curious so I researched in wilkpedia and found this : Wilder almost set an NFL record that season for combined rushing and receiving yards in a season finishing 16 yards short with 2,229. In an attempt to give Wilder one more chance to break the record in the final minute of the final game of the 1984 season against the New York Jets, head coach John McKay ordered his defense to let the Jets score, so that the Bucs could go back on offense. This resulted in one of the strangest plays in NFL history where the Tampa Bay defense simply stood still as the Jets ran the ball into the end zone.
