The New York Jets have cut third year cornerback Derrick Jones. Jones was replaced on the 90 man roster with the re-signing of recently cut tight end Nick Truesdell.

Derrick Jones was drafted by the Jets with the 204th selection in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He was the last of nine Jets draft picks in 2017. Jones, a converted wide receiver, had the speed and size to be an NFL boundary cornerback, but he was extremely raw with his technique and instincts, a problem that never showed enough improvement. Though many, including myself, hoped Jones would show enough to challenge for a starting position this year on a Jets roster extremely thin at cornerback, apparently the Jets saw enough after Thursday’s game and decided to move on.

Derrick Jones becomes the sixth of nine Jets 2017 draft picks to be cut by the team. The only remaining members of the Jets 2017 draft class are Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye and Elijah McGuire. McGuire appears to be fighting an uphill battle to make the 2019 Jets. If he is cut only the first and second round picks from that draft will remain.

The re-signing of 29 year old tight end Nick Truesdell comes just days after none of the Jets tight ends other than Chris Herndon had any appreciable impact on the Jets offense in the first pre-season game. It would be a surprise if Truesdell were to make this team after coming aboard so late, but he does have plus athletic ability and he also has decent receiving skills as a converted wide receiver.

I had hope for him but he just never produced in games. He might have looked good in camp, but not in games. I think they gave him enough rope to catch on but it seemed to run out. It's to bad, he had all the physical tools to be good.

Only a matter of time before it becomes 7 out of 9. Just one of the reasons Maccagnan needed to go.

First thing Macc did when he got hired was start dumping Idzik picks.

Did we end up regretting any of those?

You know, Derrick "Bones" Jones. He made a name for himself in 2018 when he defended a couple of passes in practice during camp.

    How the mighty have fallen.

I'd rather see them keep McGuire instead of Maye. He's out there battling for his spot the other guy isn't earning anything.

How bad to you have to be to get cut from a team with bad corners?

An all time bad take here. McGuire is out there battling for his spot... poorly. He isn’t good at anything. Maye’s issues are things he can’t help. McGuire’s issue is talent.

Well he’s part of the reason they’re so bad. We all knew this was coming - what I can’t figure out is why or how Mac bungled so many draft picks outside of round 1. Wasn’t he one of the Texans top scouts or at least come over with the reputation of a good scout? To become a GM one has to have scouting experience. I suppose successful scouting doesn’t matter?

He could engineer player trades and work the cap well enough but apparently a lousy draft day guy. Always passing on needs and trading down to collect more picks in later rounds which amounted to nothing. This last draft took the cake. SMH.

“I’d rather us keep a 4th string player over one of our starters”

Give me a BREAK. We wouldn’t even save anything for cutting Maye. His contract this year (which is barely over $1M, mind you) is almost fully guaranteed.

Also, since he’s on PUP we can just keep him there until he’s healthy and he won’t take up a roster spot.

    So Maye:
    - Is a talented, projected starting player on the defense
    - Plays a position we’re shallow at
    - Is barely making any money this year (~1.7M)
    - Would save $1M against the cap if cut (with $700k dead cap hits this year and next)
    - Isn’t currently occupying a roster spot

Saying he should be cut is an all-time bad take and is purely out of frustration/spite.

One should have scouting experience, and a LOT of it to become a GM, but one doesn't have to have it. Tanny didn't have it and neither did Idzik. They may be the only two in the history of the NFL aside from John Lynch.

That’s right Tanny was a Parcells protege - he was the contact/cap guru and eventually made his way to the top. And it showed. Aside from 2006 with the OL picks at the top he didn’t seem to value the draft at all. I think he had only 3 picks in 2007 - made the most of it with Revis and Harris but everything afterwards was through trades and FA. After the Favre experiment he gambled with Sanchez (thanks to the sweetheart deal with his pal Mangini and the Browns) and figured his rookie QB could win with the solid veteran team he assembled. Ironically it very nearly worked. Of course the downside with Tanny’s philosophy is the short window as we saw.

Idzik? Yikes I remember shaking my head when he was announced ......

He never seemed to have a coherent plan and didn't value the OL as much as he should have. There were quality OL prospects to be had in rounds 2-3 of each of the 5 drafts he was here for. And the best skill position player he acquired was via free agency.

Idzic was a scout before the salary cap. He went to the numbers side when the cap was introduced.
