The move for Kalil conveys that we have a real GM. And that this is an organization that is serious about building a winning football program. Some thoughts on what he Kalil move shows: Douglas recognized he was dealt a bad hand at a position (C) that could make or break our top assets (Darnold & Leveon). Macagnan didn't even know he had a bad hand. Douglas played the hand brilliantly. No available centers. He talked the best available center out of retirement. In the process he risked nothing. And upped his output at C, RB and QB. While hiring a mentor for Harrison who might grow into a reliable starter. The move also indicates that Gase was astute in running Macagnan out of town. And did it for the right reasons. Unlike Rex and Bowles, he's surrounded himself with a top coordinator for the side of the game he doesn't intimately understand. And he appears to be putting ego aside with Williams in the name of culture and winning. We are a second CB and a healthy Marcus Maye away from being stacked on defense. While a number 1 WR would be nice, we have 6 weapons that can each create a mismatch when used effectively. And a QB with more potential and right attitude than any we've ever seen. And now, with a super smart center protecting him and helping him run the offense. I am officially excited!
I'm honestly not major concerned with the "true #1 WR" we've seen it time and time again that those goes get game-planed away and make life easier on the #2 and #3 WRs but if they can't take advantage of that it's a struggle. we seen it with the giants and ODB. teams could shut him out with double and triple teams and nobody stepped up to take advantage of the 1 vs 1 matchups. I feel better having 3 good WRs who are capable 1000 yard guys with diferent skill sets, then having a true #1 guy and a bunch of scrubs behind him. With that said I'm very excited for this team and it's future. this is the best jets team we've had talentwise in a long time on both sides of the ball. we have a FQB, a susperstar RB in his prime we haven't had since martin. a nasty Defense with a nasty front 7. a good group of WRs/TEs. It's now on gase and greg to get the job done and douglas seems like a great pick at GM who has inherited a great roster.
Douglas has definitely inherited some building blocks including a franchise QB, RB and a few good defenders but I wouldn't call it a great roster yet. There are still holes at key positions and he will need at least one offseason to fix it. This team in my estimation is about 3-4 players on offense (multiple OL and WR ) and about 2 maybe 3 defenders ( EDGE, CB ) away from having a great roster. But I am excited and they are definitely trending upwards - no doubt about that.
Welcome back ! Give this new GM a whole year and I think you're really gonna like what we see coming up...…...looking very positive finally !
Agree. Can't remember the last time a GM was making smart moves. Smart fans have been screaming about the OL for YEARS!
This true #1 garbage started because of fantasy football. Yes, I’d love to have a DeAndre Hopkins or Julio Jones, but having a bunch of wide receivers who fill a role and create mismatches can be just as effective.
every team has holes in some positions, that is a product of the cap which is meant to keep parity in the NFL. Rarely can a GM say he walked into a team with a FQB in year 2 of a rookie deal, a top 3 RB in his prime, 3 great WRs who complement each other well, a young stud TE on year 2 of a rookie deal, 2 top 6 draft picks on the d-line on their rookie deal , a 1st team all pro safety, a 4 time 2nd team all pro leading the LBer group. we are young and stacked and many players just reaching their potential on cheap rookie deals. compare that to what idzik and mac took over. old againg teams with no young talent and overpaid players to compete and no future at QB
Yes Douglas is in a better position than both Idzik and Mac were but the roster itself is not great yet. If it was Mac would still be in control. As far as WR goes the Jets still do not know exactly where Robbie Anderson fits. Enunwa is talented but injury prone. Crowder looks promising but very little depth behind those 3. The OL was bandaged together while other positions were being fixed - as we all know it has to be rebuilt ( I know finding the franchise QB took precedent ). No EDGE and CB needs some help. I get what you're saying but everything will have to break right for the Jets to make the playoffs this year. And it can. WR, OL, EDGE, and CB depth is vital and the Jets are sorely lacking as of now. QB, RB, DL, ILB, and S are stacked. On a side note I think Mac will eventually be remembered probably more fondly than he is currently. He did engineer the trade that landed us Darnold ( and lucky he lasted to # 3 ). Good cap guy, shrewd trades , but surprised he came from a scouting background looking at his drafts after the obvious round 1 picks - Herndon and Shell ( jury still out on him too ) aside. He can serve well in a front office capacity but not as a head honcho....
Good to have you back. IMHO, the term " true #1 WR is a pre fabricated term to identify a stud that can accumulate a ton of catches, yards etc to stack the stats in fantasy football as mentioned by NYJ forever. It really has little correlation to perennial contenders like the Pats, the Eagles, the Saints, the Packers, the Chargers, the Chiefs, and the few other that year after year seem to make the playoffs and beyond because of great personnel balance, great coaching, and top QBs. While the top fantasy #1WRs watch the big game from home more often than not. I want four clutch WR that can spread the wealth and give our QB options versus one world beater like Megatron, compelled to be the go to for most situations. My two cents. Of course if we ever get one, I shall rejoice even more.
I keep reading the praise for Douglas for this move, and yes he deserves a ton of credit, but all indications seem to be that Adam Gase played a SIGNIFICANT role in talking him out of retirement. There have been a number of reports that signal that Gase played a large role in making this happen. Let's also not forget that according to reports, Kalil came out of retirement because he liked what he saw in Sam Darnold. Safe to say, a lot of things had to align for this to take place. I am EXTREMELY grateful for Douglas getting things in motion. But let's not ignore the role Gase and Darnold played in making this happen.
I understand the OP's points, but I was more excited for the 2010 season given what happened the previous year and most key players returning.
I dont know if Mac will be remembered fondly but I think he should be given credit for a few things... Traded S. Richardson to SHawks, that helped land #3 pick QB Sam D. Mac got rid of older guys who were heading down hill such as Decker and B Marshall. Also Jamal Adam's pick, and Herndon pick really good.
This is the most excited I am abt the team since Rex Sanchez 2nd season... Having the right GM, Coach, and Leaders on both sided of the ball is huge. All good teams have holes, so do we. The best teams know how to protect their weakness and exploit the other teams weakness. This team has the right mixture of youth and vets. No big Ego from our leaders (R. Anderson can lost his cool sometimes but he is not a leader atp).
I think you have results confused with roster. lots of young talent on cheap deals that are only going to improve and can be life long jets plus a FQB in year 2 of their rookie deal is huge. If we win say 10 games this year, it's with the roster mac built. darnolds sucess leading to the jets sucess is directly because of mac. Douglas hasn't done anyhting to the roster yet becuase he hasn't had an offseason really. he's added 1 player (which wa a great move BTW) mac not ebing here is more due to having a new regime and HC and wanting a GM with an HC that works together. it was clear gase and mac were not on the same page and 1 had to go. being fired in the NFL doesn't make you bad or mean you didn't do good. parcells once said there are 2 types of coaches in the NFL those who have been fired and those who will be fired. Same goes to GMs. I'm sure people in Miami are glad gase is gone and thinks he sucks. We are all excited to have him. Obviously we have some holes. we are only on year 3 of a full rebuild. all rebuilds take 4-6 years. o-line and maybe edge rusher. but again every team has holes. You can't find a team anywhere that isn't weak in some position. We are complaining about only have 3 WRs and 1 injury prone, look at the steelers who are perpetually a great team. they now have juju and not much else at WR. surely nobody wroth a dam in the 4th-6th slots. they have a better o-line then us, but we have a better group of WRs, RBs, and TEs. same for the pats. they have edelman and some scrubs and just won a SB. it's all because of brady and bill. If we look at it froma pure roster standpoint, ours is one of the better ones in the NFL.
Properly executed rebuilds don't take that long. And there's no way our roster is one of the better ones in the NFL. At best, it's middle of the pack.
Coaching is going to be the key to what this team achieves this season. We've seen that Bowles couldn't coach up any of his players to over achieve ... he had one of the worst staff's in the entire league, never one developing a player and turning him into a star. I honestly do not see how this guy gets the respect he does in this league & is seen as a good defensive mind. Leo has a lot to prove this season because in my mind he's in no way living up to the hype he had coming out of college...he's average, at best. As far as I'm concerned he can walk at seasons end. I can see Henry Anderson opening some eyes getting to the QB... I think he's vastly underrated. Maye needs to get healthy ... he makes Adams a better player when he's on the field & he seems to have a knack for finding the ball. I don't think our O gets enough respect around the league... I think Robby is gonna have a break out year & show everyone he is a complete receiver & not just the deep threat he's known as. Herndon, Q, A great slot guy like Crowder along with the duel threat of Bell/ Montgomery is pretty stacked as far as I can see. Kicking game is suspect , and return game is a ? at this point ... this is another area where coaching is going to be a big factor. All in all I'm feeling pretty positive about the changes we've made & feel we should be competing for a wildcard spot .
historically that's incorrect. the rams rebuild for example which was the last successful one i'm aware of started in 2012 when he took over a 2-14 team with a bad roster and no QB. it took them 6 years to win more then 7 games (2017 they went 11-5 and made the playoffs) and 7 years to make a SB (2018 lost to NE) and he's widely regarded as one of the best GMs in the NFL and did draft exceptionally well over that time with names like jenoris jenkins, trumaine johnson, alec ogletree, aaron donald, greg robinson, todd gurley, jarod goff, cooper kupp. etc. I'd love to see what teams you show in recent history have rebuilt in 3 years
This is where I'm at as well. I haven't been this jacked up for a season since that year as well. I'm not drinking the 10 or 11 win season kool-aid like some other fans, but I fully expect this team to be competing for a WC when it comes down to the final 4 weeks of the season. If they aren't I will consider it a massive failure.
