Everytime I'd start to get my hopes up for this season, I'd think about having Jonotthan Harrison calling signals for the Oline in the crunch and a black cloud would form over my head. Having a center of Kalil's caliber calling those signals is going to make the whole line play better, it will help Sam stay focused and it will help the entire RB group produce. This makes a world of difference, assuming the guy doesn't end up on IR in wk 3.
I’m so happy right now! A GM that knows how important the oline is and goes out and does something about it! Lock this guy up for life as GM of Jets.
Love this. Veteran experience for Sam under center will be nothing but good for us. Now get me Trent and let’s go.
All the doubters should be aware a Vet like kalil doesn't risk further injury unless he's good to go Big probs to Douglas and Gase May they get 100 more deals done like this one!!
Kalil I believe was league average last year. Ranked about 16th or so. For us this is an upgrade. Heck even if he slips to like 18th-20th it will still be an upgrade over what we had the last two seasons. Awesome move by Douglas. Mac really did not place the value that we needed at this position and we had to deal with a lot of horrible center play and snaps 10 feet over Darnolds head after being spoiled for many years by Mawae and then Mangold (congrats to Mawae btw as he goes into the Hall today) There wasn't a lot out there after Morse and Paradis went off the market. Gase was justifiably upset at Mac for his lack of aggression in finding an adequate center for Darnold. Douglas got us a damn good stopgap. I don't expect Pro Bowl play from Kalil anymore, but he sure as hell won't be bottom 3rd of the league play either. We still don't have quite the line I was hoping for going into 2019, but with Kalils addition I think we'll be about average most of the year.
Every good run the jets have had started with an unforeseen o line pickup. Kendall with herm, faneca with mangini/Rex . Hopefully this is that kind of move.
I got off work @ 6:30 and just found out about this signing once I got home and it's about 8:00 so I guess I'm late to the party but after the addition of Le'Veon Bell I absolutely love the addition of Kalil. Has always been one of the best starting NFL Center's around back in 2015 PFF rated Kalil as the third-best run-blocking center within the entire league. Although its its been downhill from there with shoulder/neck injuries but if he's truly healthy and ready to compete it's a great attempt to put both Sam Darnold and Le'Veon Bell in position for success. It's worth a gamble. No longer in his prime years he's what 34 years old (same age as me) but if even only half as good as once was just his I.Q of the position alone along with an ability to help a young Darnold call out and read defenses and another road grader for Le'Veon to run behind it's worth it. Obviously only time will tell but right now I've gotta love this addition to and for our online/offense.
I remember reading he was pretty pissed we didn't get Paradis, and not wanting to spend big money on a RB.
Upon hearing that the Jets picked up recently retired Ryan Kalil, former GM Mike Maccagnan was quoted "Who?...you can do that?"
Rapoport said Gase wanted center Matt Paradis, but Maccagnan didn't appear to agree. Paradis eventually signed with the Carolina Panthers. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...gase-disagreed-with-price-tag-for-bell-mosley
Kalil didn't come out of retirement to be a backup, he's plugged in as the starting center the moment he puts pen to paper.
No matter how well he plays he will help Sam with communication which is a big part of playing center, that will never get old, he still has the mentality of a all pro. I'm sure he has lost a step, but I believe he will help most is the running game. Man it feels good that we have a competent GM calling the shots.
This whole story makes you think of 34 as “old”, myself included. It just now hit me that I turned 34 two days ago. Wake up call.
