Training camp starts today with rookies reporting. Looks like Quinnen Williams will not be there. https://www.sny.tv/jets/news/quinne...with-rest-of-jets-rookies-on-friday/309216256
Well we can’t blame Mac for this one. I knew as soon as I saw a woman agent we were screwed... THIS WAS A JOKE, NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY ANYONE
Offset language is a strange point to argue by the drafting team IMHO. If a Top 10 draftee is so bad that he flames out and joins another team within his rookie contract, I'd be making my "savings" by firing the shit scout(s) that recommended the pick.
Normally I'd agree, but we're in the rare situation of a GM negotiating a rookie contract for a draftee that he had nothing to do with selecting. We always seem to get hung up on offsets for these high drafted players but in this instance it doesn't bother me as much.
Joe Douglas is now 0-1 in signing 1st round picks before the reporting date I don’t think this is a big deal until the entire team is in and he is still unsigned
It seems like there is one every year. Last year it was Darnold. They really need to fix this stuff, there really shouldn't even be rookie contract negotiations, they should be set in stone.
Clearly he's no better than Mac. SoJ. No wonder the team hasn't won anything in 50 years. Might as well just mail in the season now
The entire rookie wage scale is one of the many sticking points in the new CBA discussions. There is a push to eliminate it completely and that will lead to more holdouts like before it was implemented.
Agreed, it isn't too big a deal. Darnold missed three days of training camp with his contract dispute, the NFL is a business at the end of the day.
Actually, analyzing the past ten years or so of how the offsets were ever implemented and if there was any significant benefit or penalty to either players or teams might allow standardization of such language or even abandonment of same. Not kidding.
It’s actually a good idea, don’t you think they have done it already? Im sure organizations have information on other teams that have gone through this process and have determined what language would be fair for both sides.
I'm sure at least some have but this was in the context of finding a middle ground with the union so that it can be written into the CBA to avoid wasting time and developing bad blood between teams and their rookies.
They should get rid of the rookie wage scale. The owners are protected by a cap. They shouldn't need to be protected from overpaying a bust. They already have exclusive negotiating rights through the draft. Holdouts aren't a bad thing or a good thing. People have a right to be fairly compensated for their work. They have a right to negotiate and they have a right to overvalue their worth and not play if they feel they can't compromise on a deal. The same is true for the team. It sucks but the rookie wage scale has hurt not helped the NFL. The incentive for teams to dump good vets and continuity for rookies has hurt the game.
It's not up to the organization. This is a two way negotiation between the players Union and the owners. The reality is until a player is signed he isn't a member of the Union. The Union has no incentive to negotiate for drafted players until they are signed. Rookies may well challenge this is court as restraint of trade.
Obviously just my opinion but I think eliminating the rookie wage scale completely would be an incredible disaster. You have to have some sort of framework for a deal or else you were going to see the same thing happen like what’s happening with quarterbacks now. Every quarterback to get an extension or a new contract is the highest paid quarterback. That’s snowballing out of control and if you take away any sort of parameters for rookies, the same thing is going to happen.
