Another brilliant performance for Familia. Unfortunately the fact that everyone is playing so badly will probably work to Callaway's advantage, since the Wilpons will think that it's not fair to blame him for everybody being awful.
The only thing the Wilpons give a shit about is the rest of Callaway's contract they'd have to eat if they fired him today.
The only one comparable was Darryl Strawberry. As great as Alonso has been, by the time he was 26 Strawberry had had three full seasons with a higher OPS+ than Alonso has had in less than half of a season. He also provides a cautionary tale of how someone can be in the majors for 17 seasons and still ultimately have ended up having a disappointing career.
Anybody hear the latest idiocy from Callaway? He said yesterday, and repeated today, that he brought Gsellman (his best reliever right now) into the 10-2 game yesterday in the 9th inning because he "wanted to protect deGrom's ERA." The fact that their bullpen is totally horrible right now, so maybe you don't waste one of the few pitchers pitching well and put in a scrub instead didn't seem to occur to him. Even more amazing, the Braves had no runners on base when deGrom was pulled, so nothing at that point could possibly affect deGrom's ERA! Yes, this guy really does understand that little about baseball - even when he deliberately makes a boneheaded decision he doesn't realize that his entire thought process is completely wrong!
Yankee fan here: Yanks had a afternoon game today so I'm flipping the dial and check out the Mets-Braves. 5th inning, score tied 2-2. The Amazin's string together a couple of hits only to have the stupid 3rd base coach send a guy home who ended up out at the plate by a mile and on a throw up the line no less. But, during the inning they interview the Mets' field reporter (again, Yankee fan here) whom I've never seen before...some cute little tomato named Justine Ward. When did they tap this babe? Attention Brian Cashman .
I thought the Calloway and Eiland hirings were supposed to work some sort of magic for our staff. The starters suck. The bullpen sucks. What good are these two? 8.5 out of 1st now? 1.5 more games and I am officially done for the season.
Calloway baffles me. He's an analytics guy that seems to always do the opposite of what analytics would suggest.
The Mets have fired pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez. Eighty-two year old (!) Phil Regan, the minor-league assistant pitching coordinator, has been promoted to pitching coach. Ricky Bones, the bullpen coach from 2012-18, returns to that role after being demoted at the start of last offseason. Ridiculously enough Callaway was not fired, and we all know the fish stinks from the head down.
It's too early only because we can't be certain what his batting average will be by the end of the year. Is he closer to David Wright? Or Kingman? He's certainly the top power prospect, but even that can lightly questioned because of the obviously enlivened baseball. Alonso hits mostly no-doubters, but he's had at least several fly balls to right and right-center that would not have been home runs in other years. Don't get me wrong - what's not to love? I own him in all three of my fantasy teams so I am very happy.
You mean from 2015? Since then it's been more stagger, less swagger. What a nice surprise it was yesterday not realizing they were playing one of those cool Chicago Friday day games, then finding out at 6pm they've already played, and won. I was spared the 9th inning bullpen anxiety!
