Derek Mason, Burris, to replace Edwards and Cotchery was a big mistake with a relatively new QB trying to come into his own, Rex believing he could make Santonio Holmes a complete I’ll buy into anything you do as a team another big mistake, never realizing why they got him for a 5th round pick, combine that with the non stop defensive no 1 picks who could not play, you know Rex was touting these guys to tannenbaum and Izdick, He should never wonder why he is stuck at espn.
This right there was 90% of the problem. Instead of saying "We have the best team in the league except for our terrible QB. We should do anything to replace him with someone league average and take three or four good shots at the Super Bowl," Tanny and Rex doubled-down on stupidity and gave Sanchez (easily a bottom-5 starting QB in the league) an absurd contract (that no other team in the league would even remotely consider giving him) that prevented the team from being able to spend enough to find competent replacements to aging players. The Jets would have been better off cutting Sanchez and playing someone they signed for league minimum (and using the Sanchez money elsewhere), than they were by giving Sanchez $40 million for 3 years.
By the way, anyone who is really interested in what was going on in 2010 and 2011 should read the book Collision Low Crossers. The author was embedded with the team for the entire 2011 season because he thought we were going to the Super Bowl. Instead, he wound up having a front row seat (unfettered access to everything) to two guys Tannenbaum and Ryan making every possible mistake a General Manager and Head Coach could make in a single NFL season.
I liked Sanchez and thought he was good enough with the right pieces around him, but they let those go and didn't replace them. But I agree that under the circumstances they should've let Sanchez go and use that money for the areas you noted.
Its sad because Rex should still be the coach here....I think we would have been better off with him then Bowles and now Gase.
A no bullshit approach only works when the coach is respected...Guys like Belicheck and Coughlin,Harbaugh etc got away with it because they won.Gase hasnt won anything so his no bs approach will end up losing the locker room if we start losing. This can spiral out of control fast.If we start out 0-3 the media will rip Gase to peices.
I disagree. Although he might've been better than Bowles. that's a pretty low bar. And he had definitely worn out his welcome. He showed no ability to understand how to make an offense. Sure, he was a defensive specialist, but when you become HC you'd better be able to coach ALL phases, or find someone you can rely on in those areas you're weak in. Rex didn't do that. If he understood offense at all he would've fought Tanny over letting key pieces leave, and/or made sure he got better replacements. The offense died from benign neglect, and that's on him as much as Tanny.
Yet we havent been to the playoffs since....And the whole he didnt understand offense thing was a complete false narative...He was one of the best defensive coordinators you have to understand offense to be able to stop them.He just didnt value the offensive side of the ball and thought he could do more with less because of his defense.
Rex was good when his defense was fresh, and he inherited a high-character veteran team. But OCs have long since figured out how to handle his schemes, and he never adjusted. So all that's left his motivational shtick, which doesn't work when he's coaching young players who are still learning how to be pros. Or when he's coaching veterans who aren't high-character. There's a reason nobody picked him up after Buffalo fired him.
His defense the first two years are among the best ive ever seen as a Jets fan .His defensive gameplan against the Pats in the playoff game was a masterpeice.Go back and watch that game Brady can never find an open reciver.
I know, his defense was great his first two years here. But then the NFL adjusted, and he never had an answer for that. His excuse his last couple years here was that Idzik didn't give him any talent. But he had a lot of talent in Buffalo, and those defenses sucked. Worse, the Bills had a good defense under Jim Schwartz before he got there and a good defense under Sean McDermott after he left. The old Rex is gone, never to come back.
He knocked us out of the playoffs dont forget....Todd Bowles made him look like a genius in the win and get in came in week 16.
As I said, he didn't understand offense. "Breaking something", i.e. the other team's attack, isn't the same as creating something. The fact that he believed that he could create a "shut down" defense in 2010, shows that he didn't understand offense, and more so, the rules geared towards making the league an offensive league.
The only good thing I can say about Ryan is he was certainly colorful. I was glad when he was gone. By and large, the team as a whole operation was chaotic, each year worse than the one before, during his tenure.
In a perfect world, the team would have hired Mangini to be like an assistant GM alongside Tanny as the two of them drafted lights out when Mangini was coach. Rex took what Tanny/Mangini built and was the perfect motivator to push these guys deep into the playoffs. The Rex/Tanny combo obviously drafted significantly worse after that.
Yes. Although this may be rather unpopular, I'm still a big fan of Rex Ryan and wish he were still our HC. However, I know he had his faults. Trading for Holmes made it impossible for Cotch to be the number 2 receiver. Cotch felt he was deserving of that and I very much agree with Cotch. This is probably imo the very most egregious mistake Rex made during that era. He allowed a sentimental favorite with BETTER hands than Holmes and Edwards to get so upset with the team that drafted him that he decided he wanted to leave. Very upsetting.
