If there was a replacement waiting in the wings he'd be on stage now instead of having Gase up there until whenever or forever.
https://www.sny.tv/jets/news/jets-a...ith-frustration-at-nfl-draft-report/307248356 After reading this article - sadly sourced to Manish - I can fully understand Gase's anger at Macc, and how that might lead to him telling Chris: "It's either him or me". I wouldn't be surprised if this is what finally pushed Chris into doing his "deep dive" and finally seeing what some of us have been pointing out. Imagine you're a guy like Gase, with years of experience, and a football junkie, and you've just been hired to take over a team with a long losing record. Wouldn't you assume that the owner trusts you to have a lot of knowledge that could be used to turn the team around? And then to discover that the GM - who himself does not have a winning track record - is freezing you out of personnel decisions? I would certainly give the owner and ultimatum. I don't know how Gase is going to do. I had my doubts about him being the right guy, and I still do, but he was right to bring this to a head. It's clear that Macc was operating like this with Bowles also, and no wonder he stocked the team with players who didn't really fit Bowle's schemes. I really hope that Gase's passion for the game can finally be harnessed into a winning record here, but if he was responsible for getting rid of Macc, that in itself is a big win.
My one main problem with this is Adam Gase comes off as a cry baby. He always makes excuses too. He is never the problem. It is always someone else or injuries. I don't like that kind of attitude. Still, clearly that was toxic. I am not sure how the Johnsons did not notice for 5 years though. Seems odd. They truly had done nothing with football operations for years. No wonder the Jets have been a mess. So it is all up to Adam Gase now. He has so many built up excuses for failure. Hopefully he finds a way to make the Jets a winner. 2019 was not the year to win, I felt it was 2020. However, now 2019 has to be a success because failure could set the team back for years. They need to be competitive. Show they are not toxic and are on the right path. Not sure what that record would be, maybe (8-8) to (11-5). Anything less could be an issue.
I disagree that 2019 wasn't supposed to be about winning, I think it needs to be. And with Gase and now Macc being fired it absolutely HAS to be a winning season, at least 8-8 and in the hunt to the end.
I agree. The following sentence really struck me: Are Mac's scouts that weak minded that Mac fears that their evaluations would be skewed by someone else's opinion? That's just nuts! No wonder things went to hell when Bowles was here too. Instead of everyone calling Gase names and continually making fun of his eyes, I think all Jets fans owe him a debt of gratitude, regardless of what happens with his coaching the Jets.
If nothing more, this pushes the franchise closer to the right direction, even if it takes another crappy GM to make it happen. Gotta cut the dead weight eventually. More power to Gase if he made it happen.
And how does an owner - even a clueless one - not know this is how his GM is doing things? It's now clear why Macc's drafts were so poor. I still think Bowles was a bad HC, but he sure wasn't helped by this kind of relationship.
This is what I keep coming back to when I read and hear people saying that Gase should mind his own business about players, contracts, etc. If you don't have your coach involved in sharing what players fit their vision of what the team should be doing, and where the more or less important needs are, it is inevitable that that vision will fail. Apparently the obvious lack of matchup between personnel and scheme we've been seeing for years wasn't (only) coming from Bowles' inability to adapt to the players he had, if he was never given the opportunity to give input on the players he'd like to have.
Its a 2 way street. The personnel guys dont want coaches who spend acouple weeks watching prospects filtered to their desk poopooing a year’s work same as a coach doesnt want GM/FO telling them what plays to call on Sunday. All of this is avoided by simply having a god damn plan & a vision on the front end. Neither MAC or Bowles had any clue or could properly articulate their vision in a cohesive clear cut manner for everyone to work off of. Both lacked conviction fortitude or simply put chops. MAC continued the peril by never changing his process when a far more outspoken demanding new HC came on board.
But in the end, you have to have the HC's input and how he plans on coaching the team in mind. No matter how good a player is - unless he's HOF-caliber good - a coach isn't going to adapt his scheme around that player. A GM might be charged with "buying the groceries", but if he needs to know what type of cuisine his chef cooks. Look at the Darron Lee pick - he might've been a good pick for a 4-3 defense, but Bowles used a 3-4 - that's a major disconnect. And how may other players fell into that problem? But as you say, having a plan or blueprint would negate this problem. Both GM and HC would HAVE to be on the same page. Of course since Woody/Chris don't have, nor never did have, a vision, it was always left to chance. It's really no surprise that the team has floundered for so long.
They havent played a game yet and we are already a joke....This guy Gase is Toxic i dont want him here
To me the most frightening thing is how di you do nothing but watch tape, and still draft that badly?
Because you draft BPA and pick guys who do not fit the coaches scheme. You can get away with that early because talent always thrives but the later the draft goes the more you should focus on scheme and fit.
I’m wondering if we need to give Bowles a little more credit here, while he was not a very good HC maybe his refusal to change and adjust his scheme was done to give Mac the ultimate screw you middle finger for sticking him with guys that did not match his scheme. What better way then to let the football world see the results than on the football field? It could be a reach on my part but we killed Bowles for his lack of adjustments, maybe he had a score to settle with Mac and that’s the only way he knew to accomplish it. I know they want to win but if he tried talking to Mac about it and Mac still refused to listen to him maybe Bowles just stopped trying to become an enabler to Macs drafting philosophy. Pepper Johnson was also criticized for being open about drafting players that did not fit the scheme, maybe he had the pulse of the team all along. I’m glad he’s fired, hopefully they get the hire right for GM.
