Interestingly enough Florio doesn't totally savage the Jets with his overall tone - he actually sounds almost like he's defending them somewhat... https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/05/17/rumors-fly-of-the-jets-pursuing-peyton-manning/
I love Peyton but I rather have Joe Douglas and Daniel Jeremiah as VP than a first timer at any job as an executive.
Imagine how many PSLs Woody could sell with easily the best sports alumni pitch man on the planet as the figurehead of the franchise?
If this somehow happens (which I don't think it will), it could be the best thing for this franchise or the worst thing. It has boom or bust written all over it. Why not hire Peyton, Douglas and DJ?
Id embrace it.Hes a super competitive smart dude w a ton of connections & incredible intell on Quarterbacks/passing game bc of his QB camp. He fits that perfect balance between getting along w Gase but having more than enough fortitude & credibility to stand up to him. Better bring in a good finance guy as welll as a credible head of personnel.Course w Manning & all he brings thats no longer a difficult task.
As some others have said: "Boom or bust". It could work for all the reasons Kurt mentioned, but it could also be bad. Frankly, I'd prefer to go a more established route now, like Joe Douglas, and if not him, Eliot Wolf, or one of the other highly touted (by football people) candidates. Preferably someone who has either been a GM or GM Assistant and has done the job. Not another novice who has to learn OTJ. Maybe hiring Manning as the Pres. of Football Ops, and letting him hire a GM would work? He sure couldn't do worse than the Johnsons.
This could essentially be the head of football Ops we’ve all been looking for. He’d have to hire good talent and cap people with him overseeing the strategy. I’d really like to see that.
Manning may shy away from an owner who might fire him in a year, badly embarrassing him. "I would like to thank Payten for his leadership he has brought to the NY Jets. However I've decided to move in a different direction".
Yep you beat me to it. Whether they call it GM or Football Ops he’d be running the overall strategy which I like.
Yep exactly this. Hire them all. It’s time to invest in football people within this organization rather than giving the keys to whatever personality has the Johnsons ear.
