overall not a fan of Okuma, but picked up an Azores jigging spin rod (50-100#) today.... for $99!!! to pair with a Penn Spinfisher 6500. It looks pretty legit (all carbon with solid fuji guides) .... gonna spool it with 50# PP tonight. ready to put it to work
Got a bunch of other shit today... tent sale at Strike Zone in JAX

Going heavier are we? Sounds like a nice rig for jigging deep. Gonna use any mono topshot?

Oh yeah, just had my second Tanacom 500 delivered yesterday. Wifey mentioned we might need a spare for the other 500 as it performed so good on the deep drop trip. Spooled with 350m of 50# Daiwa 8 strand J-braid.

Those reels truly could be called little giants with their 33lbs of drag and high line capacity. Can't wait to break them both out on a Cod/Pollock/Haddock trip off Block Island. I think those trips start in Mid to late June.

There's some big fish down there ;) That reel has close to 30# drag... I'll prob set it to 15-20ish (was gonna put 65# on there, but I already had a 500yd. spool of 50 at the house)

not really.... prob just a long leader... 60-80#

    LOL

I always thought drag should be set to 20% of rated line strength. I usually set my 50# rigs at 10# and so forth.

usually 25% (well, at least for trolling... we would set the 50W at 12# drag... This is from friends that grew up fishing marlin and tuna tournaments) can go up to a 1/3 for jigging/bottom fishing.... You may pull / pop some but you usually got to get them out/away from the structure, but generally you can go higher than trolling simply because odds are the tension/fish will be in one direction.... sometime a fired up pelagic will zigzag/change direction (towards boat, and line goes slack at times... and there's usually more impact on strike trolling

ex: my 114H (beast master), I have 80#.... it has around 22# drag. That setup is just for LARGE baits and pulling grouper/snapper out of their holes... havent used this one yet, but have used comparable set ups in the past.... will mostly just be used as a grouper digger.

but yeah, messing with that spinning rod yest, i think I'll do 12-15#.... I know despite those drag ratings, not sure how the reels internals can handle it. didnt have an exact scale, just tied it to some dumbbells in the garage. :)

my other large spinner (baitrunner 8000) the drag is set a bit less as it's more for fish closer to the surface (although I did pull that big african Pomp up from 100')

Those guys down south have it easy.... we have to run 40-60 miles to do most of that stuff
