yeah but smith is a very limited QB. he's smart and a great leader and has a personality every team loves, but there is a good reason the niners let him walk, and the chiefs traded him. he's a solid QB but far from a great one and very limited. in the right system he will protect the ball, make good decisions, and get it in his playmakers hands. but he isn't winning games for teams. he's just really good at not losing them and can win with the right talent around him. he doens't bump up his team in the way a rodgers or brady can
The whole he wouldn’t be doing this here argument is infuriating to me. That’s irrelevant. The issue at hand is that we have a poor talent evaluator putting together our roster. We needed a QB and the man getting paid millions to evaluate the position had an elite talent at the position fall on his lap and threw it off. Furthermore, because of his f*ck up he HAD to draft a QB the next year. It wasn’t part of a master plan it was to save his f*cking job and buy him more time. Note he blindly traded to the 3rd spot believing that Darnold would not be available. So we really have no f*cking idea who the man who thought Petty and Hackenberg were NFL caliber QBs would have banked his career on. Dorsey & Gettleman saves us from finding out. God forbid something happens to Darnold or he doesn’t pan out, do you have faith in Macc to find his replacement?
Dan Marino had 48 TDs his 1st year as the full time starter but something like 30 the year after that. I guess that’s an example. Anyway I find this whole TD discussion ridiculous. Bottom line is that he was an elite prospect at the position and we failed to recognize that.
Spot on! If Mahomes would not have done as well here as with KC - and he likely wouldn't given the CS - how is that any reason to not pick him? Using this "logic", the Jets also shouldn't have drafted Adams(or any good talent) because he likely wouldn't have done as well as he would've elsewhere. Macc fucked up, plain and simple. Even I - who I freely admit am not a professional scout or evaluator - could see Mahomes as a generational talent. He's a Marino, an Elway, hell a Namath! How could a guy who had a reputation as a talent evaluator miss this? I would love to hear Macc's "justification". This isn't "20-20 hindsight". You were on the Mahomes Train early, and once you tipped us off I quickly got my ticket. This was such a no-brainer! And yet I knew, because Macc had also screwed up the year before with his brain dead Hack pick, that he wouldn't take a QB because it would plainly show everyone how badly he had fucked up with Hack. Truly, this failure is right up there with taking Ken O'Brien over Marino - and I liked Kenny, but he was damn sure no Marino. If the Johnsons had any clue at all, after seeing what Mahomes did this season, they would've fired Macc along with Bowles. His record shows that he knows nothing about building an offense, and that's criminal in a league that maximizes offense. I accept that he's here for now, and I hope that he proves me wrong, but I doubt it.
The "bottom line" is that he's among the top QBs (before he was hurt) in the NFL, and no team would consider trading him away unless they had someone really special to take his place. That's the measure of Patrick Mahomes.
I agree with everything except the last sentence. The decision was not smart; it never will be no matter what happens in the future. If I make it home safely after driving drunk, that doesn’t mean it was a smart decision after the fact. We can isolate the decision without it being considered a pining for Mahomes and/or a Mahomes/Darnold comparison. If Macc and others could isolate talent from scheme & school history, Mahomes would not have gone 10th.
How is that irrelevant? Whether a QB selected in the top 10 of the draft would succeed here is everything. I disagree that this was a 'Mac f*ck up', or a fuck up at all. If we drafted Mahomes and he struggled big time heading into his 3rd OC in 3 years, everyone would be screaming for Mac's firing in that scenario. You can't win with fans either way.
He started 9 games as a rookie and he was All pro the following 2 years after the 48TD's. He didn't exactly have a Sophomore slump.
MAYBE....MAYBE...IF...Mahomes struggled, then some people would be screaming for Macc's head. BUT... Do you seriously believe that Mahomes would "struggle" like a more average QB? If you think so you have not seen any tape on him either his college or pro footage. So many were raving about Josh Allen's arm, but all they were drooling over was his arm strength which Mahomes has at least as much. But in addition Mahomes has accuracy, and can complete passes with either arm! If Allen ever reaches his full potential he still won't equal Mahomes's. Still, I would take Mahomes "struggling" over almost any other QB because I would know that it wasn't him struggling, as much as the CS and players around him sucking.
I was posting last year that I wanted McCown to start the season. Darnold had a rough ride for a big part of the year, but he came through it ok. All the more reason I feel he is the right QB for this team.
Whether or not he would be putting up the video game numbers he did in KC here is what’s irrelevant. Even if a young QB “struggles”, you can tell if you have something. You guys are too focus on stats and what the “experts” say it’s probably why the concept of drafting Mahomes at 6th in 2017 seems so foreign.
If Mahomes was started day 1 as a rookie with our 2017 team, yes I do think he would have struggled quite a bit. Rookie day 1 starter with the talent we had in '17, Bowles and Morton coaching, is a far cry from learning a year and then starting for Andy Reid on a stacked Chiefs offense. I just don't get all the Mahomes whining. Why stop there? There are QB's, and other talented players, selected every year that pan out. Every GM should be fired that didn't take them!
I know you really liked Mahomes as a prospect, so I'll give you credit for not just playing the hindsight game. But I don't see passing on Mahomes as a f*ck up, any more than not drafting any other player that is currently having success. There is more than one way to build a team, and more than 1 guy to build it around. I like the talent the Jets have been bringing in recently, especially these last two offseasons.
That's the problem we have a GM who is part of the group of mediocre who can't see a generational talent when it's starring them in the face or won't make the changes below them to develop it and lack the balls to act. I'm upset because we did the same thing when we passed on Marino.
