Summary: Mac tried hard to trade up into the top of the 2nd round for a DB. But when DBs flew off the shelf early, Mac settled on trading up into the bottom of the 2nd for WR Mecole Hardman. Mac was trying to move up from our 68th to the Eagles 57th. But then Chiefs trade up to 56th (with the Rams) and took Hardman, who will replace Tyreek. With the DBs gone early and Hardman gone at 56, Mac settled back and stayed put in the 3rd (Polite). Although Gang Green has no involvement in the matter, the team’s future was altered in the draft this weekend because of it. The Chiefs barred Hill from the team facility after a disturbing recording centered on Hill’s son’s broken arm surfaced on the first day of the draft. Kansas City police re-opened the criminal case to determine Hill’s role in the incident. His future in the NFL remains very much in doubt. The Chiefs responded by making it a priority to find Hill’s potential replacement. So, they traded up in the second round with the Rams to draft Georgia wide receiver Mecole Hardman with the No. 56 overall pick on Friday. Kansas City gave the Rams their fifth-round pick to move up five spots. The Jets, meanwhile, were positioning themselves to trade into the second round for Hardman, according to sources. Gang Green, who didn’t have a second-round pick, specifically targeted and coveted the speedy 5-10, 187-pound wideout. They attempted to move up from No. 68 (in the third round) to the Eagles’ spot at No. 57. Any potential Jets-Eagles deal died when the Chiefs leaped over both to get Hardman. The league is still investigating the Hill incident. (Charlie Riedel/AP) If the audio of Hill’s fiancé telling him that their son was “terrified” of him didn’t come to light, it’s fair to conclude that the Jets would have made a trade with Philly to land Hardman. It’s unclear what the complete trade package was, but the Jets surely would have had to give up the No. 68 pick that they ultimately used on Florida edge pass rusher Jachai Polite. The Jets have believed all along that they need more weapons for Sam Darnold. Hardman, an explosive athlete, would have added a dynamic dimension. Hardman played his freshman year at cornerback before transitioning to receiver. He had 35 catches for 532 yards and seven touchdowns in his first season as a starter. Hardman also averaged 20.1 yards per punt return last season and had a career 25 yards per kick return average. The former high school and college track star ran a blazing 4.33 40-yard dash at the Combine. Scouts that I touched base believe that he has star potential. Fantasy Football Alert: Patrick Mahomes will likely lean on him if/when Hill is suspended or cut. The Jets were determined to move up earlier in the second round too. Gang Green wanted to jump into the Top 5 of the round, according to sources. They talked to several teams, including the Colts (No. 34) and Seahawks (No. 37). The Jets were targeting a cornerback, according to sources, but they couldn’t strike a deal. It would have taken significant draft capital to jump from No. 68 to the 30s. The first two players off the board in Round 2 were cornerbacks: Byron Murphy (to the Cardinals at No. 33) and Rock Ya-Sin (to the Colts at No. 34). Two more corners (Sean Bunting to the Buccaneers at No. 39) and Treyvon Mullin (to the Raiders at No. 40) were taken in the first 10 picks of the second round. In the end, Gang Green didn’t jump into the second round. Hill’s legal issues impacted the path of their Jets draft.
Forgive me if I find it a little humorous that we're supposed to believe Mecole Hardman would have had a seismic impact on our franchise success.
Proving further that Mac is an idiot. Giving up picks that we used on (OLB) and (OT) for a 5'9 receiver lmao.
So let me get this straight. Macc was going to trade up for a WR, but when that SPECIFIC WR was taken, he gave up that notion completely and went for another "D" pick? Right. Like there was no other WR as good, or even better, than Hardman, so he was "forced" to take a defensive guy. If this is really true, Macc simply must be fired ASAP.
I believe the Chiefs are far better talent evaluators than Macsuckan so that alone makes me think Hardman will be good. As for why Macsuckan was after him? Even a blind squirrel finds a nut on occasion.
Did you come up with Macsuckan all by yourself? It’s super creative and doesn’t make you come off as a 12 yr old jackass at all!
Every team is different, but generally teams rank guys in rounds (1, 2, 3, etc.) and then within the round rank them as top, middle or bottom round guys. Jets could have ranked Hardman as a top or middle of the 2nd round guy, and when he was there at the bottom of the 2nd, jets tried to move up bc he was sticking out on their board. Once he was taken, if they didn’t have anyone else standing out that fell, they could have just waited until their pick for the next group of guys. It happens all the time and no one needs to “be fired” for running a draft that way. If so, then you’ll have to fire the majority of gms in the league.
Easy for someone with a competent GM to say. Yes they do need to be fired for considering trading up and losing more picks to get mecole Hardman.
Mac has TWO head coaches he has to appease with his picks. He made Greg Williams happy with Quinnten, then had to make a move to get a quality guy for Gase (Sam). When that fell thru, Macc said "Oh well! Back to Defense!" Then someone handed Gase a kleenex.
If that was the case... Then let's do a Patriot move, and sign T Hill if/when he is available to be signed. We signed M. Vick after his animal abuse case. Now we can pick up Hill after his child abuse case lol. Also of the Jets targeted Wr Hardman in this trade that means their scouting is not as bad as we are making it, especially if the Chiefs, who most think draft well took our potential pick... Either way we got our guys, we got our coaches, now it's time to see results. I'm tired of all this speculation, they have a 2020 mock draft, seriously. Where is the Pre-Season??
I understand how the draft works, my shock is that Macc would only have one guy targeted like that, and when he wasn't available he couldn't find another WR or OL or TE, it HAD to be a defensive guy. Sorry, Macc's "strategy" is junk.
Good teams don’t really operate that way. They don’t target positions, they target players. If they have a group of guys ranked in the top of the third round then sure, they’ll usually pick the need position if they have the option. But what they won’t do is ignore those top of the round guys that are available and reach down and grab a middle or end of the round guy at a position of need. That’s bad value and setting the team up to fail.
I would LOVE to get Tyree Hill, even if he's banned a year. He among the best, most dynamic WRs in the game and exactly the type of WR Max was trying so hard to get. And besides, his kid might have talked back and deserved getting his wing busted. You know how kids are today!
