The Jets are "determined" to trade down from the No.3 spot in next week's draft according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com. "They seem to really, really want to move down," added an anonymous NFL exec. "Maybe they're just keeping their options open, but it sure seems like that No. 3 pick is for sale." After trading the farm for Sam Darnold last year, the Jets hold just six picks in this year's draft and would like to improve that haul if possible. And there is no debate that the Jets need an infusion of talent and numerous positions on the roster. Most experts are mocking Kyler Murray to the Cardinals at No. 1, but if Arizona goes in a different direction, GM Mike Maccagnan's phone will be ringing with plenty offers for the third pick.
You only trade down when you are offered a value that's greater than what you are giving up. Being "determined" to trade down invites the possibility that the Jets will trade down for any offer presented and that's bad. I don't know who this guy Vacchiano is. Never heard of him before, but it sounds like he had nothing to write about on this day. Any GM that tips his hand as to what his mindset is going into the draft should not be a GM. So, how a two bit sports writer knows this is beyond belief.
Mac already announced the # 3 pick was “ for sale “ back in February . I was confused as to why this was a necessity at the time and I still am now. Common sense dictates if a QB needy team wants to move up ahead of the other teams that need QBs they would call the Jets to check in a possible trade. if the Jets are on the clock and don’t particularly like the talent that is there in the projected # 3 range then they would look to trade down. Announcing the pick is for sale sounds amateurish and has a desperate tinge to it. I would think a GM at that point is inviting more seasoned GMs to rip him off....but that’s just my opinion.
Your opinion is correct. Mac is desperate to get his hands on more mid round picks to spend on overaged prospects. Saying that we will listen to offers is fine. And maybe that was all he was trying to say. But the smoke coming out makes it seem like he is one desperate cowpoke
Exactly. The announcement took me by surprise considering his past trades have been pretty decent. I know he has relationships with a few GMs from prior trades. These trade talks usually start in bars at the senior bowl or in Indianapolis at a bar. Mac and a GM or pro player director of another team or two. “Hey what would you offer me for the # 3 pick if you wanted to move up for John Smith ?” type conversations ....... By announcing it league wide you’re turning off a lot of teams because now they’re assuming Mac is gonna be over asking ...
I totally disagree - if he is saying he wants to trade down it means he wants to trade down. You think by him saying this others will be turned off thinking he wants too much? I think it’s just as likely others will make lowball offers thinking they can rip him off. The hope is that regardless this opens up dialogues which could progress to a deal acceptable to both sides.
If he trades down and gets either Allen, Metcalf or Jonah it would be a great move. I would also be fine with making a deal with Seattle for Frank Clark. Seattle - 1st (3) + 3rd Jets - Frank Clark + 1st (21) + 2nd This would give us a shot at Greedy, AJ Brown and Sweat plus add a 2nd round pick and a young proven pass rusher in Clark.
My new favorite option is to trade a little further back into the top 10 and take T.J. Hockenson. He and Herndon would be an obnoxious task to cover over the middle of the field and huge security blankets for Sam, especially in the red zone where we struggled. He’d also be a big boost to the run game. All that while picking up a couple extra picks? Sign me up for that over taking another d-lineman, no matter how good they might be. Unless Bosa falls to 3 in which case you just turn in the card in 7 seconds.
I would rather give up next years 1 for Clark and then dish the 3 for a 1 this year and 1 next year. You’re basically getting clark by moving down however many spots in the draft & money.
Yep. He wants to trade back and can advertise this for free, so why wouldn't he? "Wanna move up? Jets are listening." Nothing to lose by doing this. Non-story, really.
The problem is Clark is gonna cost a lot of money for a new contract . The advantage to drafting a pass rusher is you’re getting him on the cheaps by drafting him ....
If a GM announces his # 3 pick is for sale I would think most GMs are going to figure the asking price is gonna be high to start. Sure they can negotiate. I just have always thought the best tactical way to trade is too hold your thoughts close to the vest and not show your cards too early. Wait for a team or two to approach you and see what their offer is and adjust accordingly . Just because he got the Darnold pick for three second round picks doesn’t mean he will get that same return this year. He seems to think he’s entitled to that same exact return. Different year, different prospects. I guess we’ll find out in 4 days.....I hope it works out for his sake.
-According to the trade chart, you’re giving Clark the value of pick 12 which is absolutely insane. Esp considering the huge contract he’s going to demand. -Seattle doesn’t have a 2nd round pick this year My fantasy trade would look something like: Jets give: #3 overall and #93 overall Jets get: # 11 overall, #42 overall, and 2020 Cin 1st round Jets give: #11 overall and #68 overall Jets get #21 overall and Frank Clark Jets give #42 overall and 2020 2nd round Jets get #26/28th overall With the 21st pick the Jets pick Garrett Bradbury With the 2_th pick the Jets pick Jeffrey Simmons 2019 Season Frank Clark gives you the missing link your dl has been craving Garrett Bradbury gives your young fqb a young top tier Center 2020 Season Jeffrey Simmons allows you to seamlessly move on from Big Cat next year or sign him for a reasonable price to have a dominant, deep dl Via Cincinnati we have the chance at the #1 overall pick We should never pick in the 2nd round
Mac announcing the pick is for sale means absolutely zilch both good and bad. Of course the price is going to start higher, that’s negotiating 101. I also don’t believe you can’t take less than perceived value in a trade back. If the Jets think they can get their guy and pick up a couple more picks in the process than that’s exactly what they should do, even if it’s at less than what the value chart says.
There's a difference between saying you're willing to trade down and being "determined" to trade down. In my mind, the latter is grounds for getting less than you're giving up.
