Jeremiah had us taking him at 3 in his last mock as well. I really, REALLY don't like this. If you're going to pass on a top edge rusher for a DT, at least take the one people are calling the potential best player in the draft!
At least Mac and Gase haven't sent all of our scouts home (as Chucky and Mike Mayock did) because they don't trust them.
If you're taking one that many consider the best player in the draft, it's not as crazy. Taking one with the 3rd pick that would probably be there at 13 is insane.
My guess is he is on the radar for where they think they will land in a trade down. At this point in the process the have some deals framed out so the sudden connection could point to a trade down happening. Not a fan, would rather have Allen but we’ll see how it shakes out
Oliver is just as good of a prospect as Quinnon w the added bonus of being more versatile, more agile & multiple years of production w basically no help around him.He was also considered the best prospect in this draft up until early December when Quinnon’s stock really took off. The only knocks on him are his playing weight & stupid “jacket gate” which raised questions of character but everything ive seen points to a down home horse lovin family guy. Physically he takes a backseat no DT basically ever including Quinnon. Oliver is a legit top 5 prospect in basically any draft. I think going DL again is a potential mistake but the “im ok w Quinnon but not Oliver” sentiment doesnt make alot of sense IMO
My take: Oliver looks to be the option should the Jets trade down, along with Jonah Williams. Buffalo will take Oliver at their pick, so if you trade down before BUF you can grab Oliver and a 2nd rounder. Oliver is a monster, he can play anywhere alongside the defensive line. Shit, I bet you can throw him at OLB to really confuse people (very rarely, rush the passer only). His skill-set is truly like Aaron Donald. He has a nasty edge to him also that I like. I would hate to see the Bills get him.
Yes I can live with Oliver - AFTER A TRADE DOWN. Say they traded down to # 7 or so and pick up a second rounder and another pick somewhere . However I’m hoping they stay put and take whichever EDGE player is there at #3.
A trade down would be foolish. We finally have an opportunity to land a prospect we haven't had since J Abraham. Here's another one -Jets had that prospect TE come to visit this week. Someone please explain this one to me. I would be pissed with trade down but it is what it is. But a TE in 1st round. Even in round 2 or 3 no way. Please that is stupid. We have way higher priorities than TE. Edge rusher and Center and CB way higher. This is what gets me so scared. The Jets don't know what they're doing.
In addition to 'that prospect TE' the Jets will have also brought in the following leading up to the draft: • S Johnathan Abram, Mississippi State • OLB Josh Allen, Kentucky* • DB Ugo Amadi, Oregon • OT Yodny Cajuste, West Virginia • DL Rashan Gary, Michigan • C/G Erik McCoy, Texas A&M • DE Shareef Miller, Penn State • DT Ed Oliver, Houston • CB Amani Oruwariye, Penn State • DL Immanuel Turner, Louisiana Tech • CB Justin Layne, Michigan State • DT Quinnen Williams, Alabama • WR Jalen Hurd, Baylor So exactly what don't the Jets know what they're doing? .
Doing their due diligence which is what they’re being paid to do - along with picking the correct players of course. Keep an eye on that CB Justin Layne - if the Jets trade down I can see them taking him in the second round. A very good underrated player .
