One positive is the drafting and player evaluations should get better over time as a FO gets the scouts they want. Mac has increased the number of scouts and got more of his guys in player personnel. One of the advantages of continuity is not starting over and rebuilding but rather adding and hopefully improving the existing scouting.
That is scary, I hope that isn't true. I remember when Rex was still our HC, he was being interviewed by Billick and someone else from the NFL network, and Billick recalled kicking Rex out of the war room during the draft because he would advocate and fight for the players he wanted. Not surprised that "ball-less" Bowels wouldn't give his two cents.
I think what will make this year better, IMO, is that he is actually getting inputs and participation from the CS. Thus there is great common incentive by all parties to select talent that fits well with whatever system we will transition to. Selecting in a vacuum without the coach's involvement as in years past has been innefective, particularly in the middle rounds. Bowles approach, "I don't need to be involved. Give me good players and I can coach them" was less than stellar in my opinion.
[STUPID statement removed] A good talent evaluator drafts good players, I am sure Bowles told him what scheme he wants to run and for Mac to draft the best players. I think this quote really is an issue for both sides, the coaches and the GM. GM drafted Hack did he not? So are you telling me, he needed Bowles to tell him Hack is a bad QB when Mac was a reliable scout with the Texans? Hopefully Gase / Williams helps Mac, because he needs it big time. If Gase can't evaluate talent either, then don't count on a good draft.
actually I think Parcells' philosophy was the opposite. "How am I supposed to cook dinner when I can't buy the groceries" or something to that affect. thats why he left NE and came here. Yes here is the actual quote, from a 1997 NY Times article after he split from NE: "In his departure from the New England Patriots yesterday, Parcells tried to explain his drive for creative freedom, which forced the split with the owner, Robert K. Kraft: 'It's just like a friend of mine told me,'' Parcells said. '' 'If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.' '' https://www.nytimes.com/1997/02/01/sports/parcells-seeking-new-kitchen.html
"If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries" Good point, thanks for the correction. Mac still sucks tho
What I'm telling you is Mac needs help from smart people because he and his staff are not savvy enough particularly in the middle rounds where player potential is much harder to assess. He is not a natural talent evaluator like the great ones that can overrule his staff. I think with Gase and Williams, two very smart football people he will be much more effective that with the hands off approach. Yes he drafted Hack, and it was a very poor assessment of potential, I bet with Gase that selection would have been a total non starter. Personality or not, he knows talent when he sees it.
There’s no way we don’t move Lee for a pick even late one, especially given the team is fed up with him.
That's fine, but I don't see the point. He is unquestionably a decent/good backup. I am not saying we can't trade him for a pick, but I wouldn't say it is a guarantee a team will want to trade for him.
True. Someone would pretty much have to try to miss on draft picks or not care to be as bad as Mac has been.
He has a scouting department. He easily should be able to overrule his staff, it's his job to select the players. He will need major help from Gase and Williams, but Gase has less control here then in Miami, maybe he wanted to just coach, but we will see.
