Johnny " Lam " Jones passed away today from cancer. He was 60 years old. All you old timers will remember him being the # 2 pick in the 1980 draft from Texas and how fast he was but always had a case of the dropsies. He was also a world class sprinter.......

I still can't fucking believe we actually traded up to draft Stephen Hill.

wow......we also traded up for jones in 1980...….

Walton's offense was not friendly to jones. he just wasn't a route runner but he did have decent hands. in fact there were several games where walker had more drops than jones.

did provide a few big catches in the early 80's when the jets finally emerged.

It started out so looking so promising too.

Edit: Looked it up. First game 2 TD's on 5 catches in 6 targets for 89 yards. And that ended up being probably 50% of his entire career output.

I should've run up to the podium slapped the card out of Rozelle's hand and shouted Munoz into the mic

I followed him from college days. Texas had Johnny "Lam" Jones, Johnny "Ham" Jones and Johnny "Jam". I was happy when the Jets drafted Lam Jones and thought him and Wesley Walker would be unstoppable. But it never happened. RIP Johnny Lam Jones.

Wow - that is way too young. I've only seem him play on some old game DVDs, but he could fly.

    RIP Johnny.

Edit: This would probably get more attention in the Jets forum? I'm not sure what the protocol is.

Edit again: And now I see there's another thread in the Jets forum.

Yes, and one in the BS section too. This really shouldn't be so difficult to understand - he was a Jet.

Johnny came to the Jets with lots of success and lots of promise. Too bad things didn't work out well for him on or off the field.

Shame, but all I can think about is what could have been with him. Wesley Walker, Freeman McNeil, Johnny Hector, Mickey Shuler, Jerome Barkum, boy we had some weapons...also how that idiot Shula left the field uncovered for the Mud Bowl and got away with it!

He won a gold medal at the Montreal Olympic games in the relay. The guy could fly.

I've always felt sorry for him. It must have been hard for him winning a gold medal at the Olympics, being so fast, yet not being able to capitalize on that in the NFL and being considered by many, if not most, Jets fans as a colossal bust. RIP

the seahawks and fish were our worst nemesis during those years. walton couldn't adapt to both of those defenses while shula and knox knew exactly how to counteract gastineau and the jets tendency to over pursue.

I was at the last regular season game in 1981 when the Jets had to beat Green Bay to make the playoffs and by winning it made the Giants get in also.
Jones caught a sideline bomb for a TD to ice the game for the Jets, thought many more would follow but it just never came about.
I don’t think he wanted any part of over the middle and he had a lot of drops between the marks.
Walton never really used his speed for anything.
