I’m sure Roberts, age 31 without being able to find a role, had pro bowl talent in him all along and everyone else was holding him back. Don’t be dramatic.
I am not being dramatic at all just go look at the list of our returners in the past 2 decades it is one ugly long list
they should've tried to bring him back for sure. All that money they've been throwing around and they overlooked Roberts an in-house guy who earned a contract.
It is not easy to field punts at the Meadowlands. I dunno why it has taken this organization decades to figure that out. How many times do we see muffed punts either by the Jets or the Giants or their opponents? Every year. I'd venture to say more than most if not all stadiums....although I don't have the stats compiled to support that. Roberts though, wasn't just a good punt catcher, he was a heck of a returner. He should've been brought back. Different organizations can have different priorities based on circumstances but I really believe the Jets need a dedicated quality return man, even if it costs money they dont want to spend. If they try to convert a position player to a returner....yet again.... it will be costly. they never learn
there were a couple of guys who did it well,,,,Leon,,,Cromartie,,,,Chad Morton,,Justin Miller even had a few nice returns,,,,but the rest of that list aint pretty and if just anyone could do it then losing Roberts would actually be NO BIG DEAL,,,,,,you can disagree with me if you like but at least IMO it is a big deal
It was exactly the opposite. He was told he wasn't being brought back and was pissed because he wanted to stay.
Everyone that returned under westhoff looked good. He left and so did the return game. Boyer may have had something to do with Roberts success
Westy would produce one good returner after the next......Chad Morton, Justin Miller, Leon Washington, Brad Smith... since then there was a big drought save a partial season with Josh Cribbs and then last year with Roberts. Personally I think Roberts success was more individual than it was scheme related. in other words, we may go back to shitty returning, and losing games on fumbled punts.
We had a shitload of returners under Westhoff and yes he was the best------but we had a few no name guys under him but regardless Westoff and Roberts are BOTH now gone these are guys we had in no particular order in 12 years under him did I forget anyone I am sure I did Craig Yeast Michael Bates Johnathan Carter Kyle Wilson Tim Dwight Cotchery Justin Miller Chad Morton Kerley Jim Leonard Justin Mccariens Harvin Walt Powell Leon Washington Cromartie Santana Moss Clyde Gates Joe Mcknight Santonio Holmes
WHAT THE The Jets re-signed him I read about it in another thread. OMG it was the other Roberts I got them mixed up. *face palm* What a terrible loss. He was great for the Jets last season. AND they lost Myers too.
It isn't a huge loss in my opinion, but I did like him as a player. The problem with Roberts, is he wasn't a great WR and I don't think he played both way on Special teams. There are only so many slots on the team. PR has been filled with Crowder and I doubt we'll lose much there. KR is still open, but McGuire can likely do that. Wish him well against all but us.
Did he want to re-sign? If he didn't then all this angst about Mac being shit again is utterly pointless. Maybe Roberts priced himself out of a deal like Myers be interesting to see if they are one season wonders.
