Yeah, that's the real story here. A talented diva WR forced his way out of Pittsburgh through bad behavior. The Steelers took a bath in the form of a cap hit and a paltry return for a guy as productive as Brown. Brown got just what he wanted: a trip out of Pittsburgh and a fat new contract. Everyone had to wonder if Beckham would be the next guy to try this. You also have to wonder if more players are going to try this and if teams are going to start unloading their headcases. Every team with a big-mouth head case is getting really nervous about now. From the Giants perspective, you can't judge this trade yet. It will all hinge on what Gettleman does with the draft picks. If he parlays them into a franchise QB, he's a genius. If he squanders them on Dave Brown, Jr., he'll get run out of town on a rail.
If this doesn't turn into a Bills for Brown deal, The Giants could trade up or if they are not happy with this year's QBs, solidify the O line and add weapons for a QB to be drafted next year. I think they now have 12 picks total. 2 first , a second, 2 thirds, a 4th a bunch of 5ths(4-5 they can use to move up). They definitely have some flexibility
If it's just based on talent and production then this is an obvious home run for the Browns. But the only reason Beckham is being traded in the first place is that he has other qualities/issues that somehow detract enough from his absolutely immense value as a pure football player to get to the point that he is even considered movable. I'm unquestionably jealous of the talent the Browns got, especially at the price they paid. As a fan of a team with a potential franchise QB on the same timeline as Mayfield, I'm not at all envious of the risk they assumed in doing so.
They're frickin' lost. Gettleman completely guts that roster then he "rolls" with ancient Eli at QB. It makes no sense.
Earth shaking news to come home to. Stunning. OBJ instantly becomes the second best player they've ever had (behind Jim Brown) right? Or #3 if Mayfield is the real deal. Or #4 if Garrett continues doing what he's been doing. No doubt the Browns look to have some SUPERSTUDS on their team now.
In retrospect, they made a serious mistake last year thinking that they could be a playoff contender with a few tweaks. I'd love to know if that was Gettleman's idea or John Mara's. (My money would be on John Mara because no owner likes to admit his team is rebuilding). They gave Beckham that big contract and passed on some pretty good QB prospects, probably better prospects than anything in this year's draft. Keeping Eli makes sense if they can get their franchise QB either in this year's draft or via trade, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll sure give Gettleman credit for a pair of balls in letting Landon Collins walk and trading Beckham. We'll have to wait to see if these were good moves.
They were loaded. Gettleman completely botched the o-line. Solder was a bust as was his rookie second round pick OG.
So, they pass on a fqb last year, then trade OBJ after giving him an extension (hello dead money), and now they'll...what? WTF is the plan, what are they doing?
To me there is nothing ballsy or smart about gutting a loaded roster, giving away quality football players or trading them away at fire sale prices. If this were my GM I'd hate him right about now. OBJ was one of their most popular players and a true superstar. This move will haunt them forever.
They were never loaded. They wasted a pick on RB that should've been a QB. They had no depth and a terribly overrated defense. And an outright bad head coach in Shurmur. He's toilet Bowles level. And a fading, aging QB. That Giants team was always doomed to be sub .500
Yeah right. 'Cause franchise QBs come around every year eh? Last year was the loaded QB draft and the year before Mahommes and Watson came out. The odds of him finding a franchise guy at QB in 2019 aren't good. Heck he ain't finding another OBJ!!!! He's destroyed that team. Traded away quality at fire sale prices. He just let Collins walk. Collins and OBJ were two of their most popular players. He's incompetent. I was wrong about him. I now see why the Panthers dropped him like a bad habit.
He has some serious competition now. OBJ is a superstud. Garrett is a superstud. I still have to see more from Mayfield before I label him a superstud.
Giants fans aren't too happy with their GM right now. I'm seeing fire Gettleman, worst GM of all time out there. This guy might've singlehandedly turned the Browns into a powerhouse with the sucker Vernon & OBJ trades. I hate him too. LOL
Wow, crazy, how did that happen? It's nice the Giants are starting to look dumber than the Jets (in general). Beckham, Jr. was their Tannenbaum/Holmes. Didn't Odell say something last year like I want to play in warm weather like LA? And then he goes to Ohio, lol. Well, I guess Cleveland is starting to look really loaded now. Let's just hope him and Mayfield get into some fist fights. As long as Mayfield gets the ball to him often, he'll probably behave. For a while.
This doesn’t feel to me like a great draft to be stockpiling picks for. I don’t see who the Raiders and Giants are going for that will replace the outgoing talent.
Giants should not trade up this year, draft rebuild their O, starting with the OL, and plan on having a high draft pick next year to get a QB.
Exactly...I've been making this argument for years. People put too much into draft picks over established players.
