Well the season has come and gone and the negativity has died down (well at least a little bit) so time to take a look at this offseason and how we can use what we got to improve the jets and try to push for a playoff spot Whats done is done! Lets take a look at the moves already made and weigh in a bit 1) Bowles out/Gase in - Todd Bolwes was fired pretty much as the clock struck 0 on the final game. It was inevitable everyone knew it was coming (and now i need a new username). So enter Gase (crazy eyes aside) i have to say i like the hiring. The theme of this offseason should be “how can we help sam” every move the jets make should be geared towards helping sam improve. His success as a NFL QB is the jets success. And while i originally wanted mccarthy the reality is dude has had 2 HOF QBs handed to him and managed to piss both off and may be see too old school for todays NFL despite winning a SB. Gase hasn’t won shit and was fired from a piss poor miami team, so on the surface, it doesn’t look good but after diving into it it seems like a good hire. 1st off Gase has worked wonders with sub par QBs in that offense and a pretty weak WR group to boot. Tannehil and Oswiler both performed above their talent level for gase and he found ways to put points up on the board and use his players well. Him running the jets offense could be a god send and if he can work wonders with tannehill and osweiler he may be the right choice to develop darnold. That alone makes me optimistic on the Hiring 2) Rodgers out/Willliams in - Rodgers was well pretty useless so hard to get worse. The Jets signed williams to be the DC. Williams most noted for bountygate with his time in NO, really should be praised for the job he did there with a severe lack of talent on defense. Head hunting aside, he’s an aggressive play caller who will take risks for big plays and not let teams dink and dunk down the field all day. He primarily ran a 4-3 but the jets will stay in a 3-4 and really doesn't matter much. In todays NFL base defenses aren’t used as often and fronts gets mixed and matched all the time with packages. Williams seems like a good fit to make use of what we have and isn’t the soft spoken bowles and rodgers. With him and gase i expect the new staff to light a fire under the players 3) Anderson Tendered - 2nd round tender, means we pay him cheap and get another year to evaluate him and see how he mends with darnold. The jets are really thin at WR so keeping him was an easy decision 4) Spencer long cut - not a big loss, we took a year flyer he didn’t have a good season and now went to buffalo. 5) Big mac stays - it was 50/50 whether he would get fired or not. He gets criticized (and rightfully so) for his poor picks in rounds 2-4 but he is given the opportunity to see the rebuild through which i agree with. If we don’t make the playoffs in 2020 though he’ll be gone and if we don’t improve in 2019 to at least a more respectable record i could see him gone as well. He really needs to use the money and pics we have to bump us up a few wins for this season Jets Pending Free Agents Jets have a ton of free agents and only like 40 players under contract and 6 picks so to fill out the roster we will need more picks and to spend some money in free agency and resign some players. We do currently have about 90 million to spend (including accounting for the rookies) and can make some room with more cuts as well. Lets look at who we have that may be worth bringing back Claiborne - has played 2 years in a row for us on 1 year prove it deals and performed well. Skrine will be gone already but not resigning him leaves a big hole. Unless we have a plan to land an upgrade it may be wise to give him a 2-3 year deal so we can look at replacements in the draft next year. We can’t afford to use a high pick on a CB when we have a solid one already we can resign. Davis Webb - depending how much the jets liked what they saw, may be a good idea to sign him cheap as a back-up and not shell out more money for a veteran backup QB. I’d be good keeping webb on a cheap couple of year deal and running with 2 QBs for the season. We aren’t a “SB or bust” team where it makes sense to have a high quality back-up. UPDATE Tendered Doug Middleton - he’s only 25 and has proven to be a solid player and pretty cheap. IDK how much we can count on maye and brooks is likely gone so bringing back middleton makes a lot of sense UPDATE Tendered Frankie Luvu - the UDFA LBer showed some flashes of potential. Should keep him on another year and see if he develops further UPDATE Tendered Jonathan Harrison - not a starter quality lineman but a solid backup who can play C and guard and 28 years old. Worth keeping on the roster for another year at least as we rebuild the o-line Andre Roberts - not a good WR, but was an electric returner for us and made the pro bowl while leading the league in return average and TDs. worth bringing back despite his age for a few years as our returner Sterling or tomlinson - take your pick here. We need 3 TEs and don’t want to draft or spend big on one. Either is capable as a 3rd string and maybe a backup to push legget. Herndon has emerged as the clear cut top TE on this team though Jeremy Clark - he’s only 25 and looked good in camp and preseason then fizzled out. Worth the vet minimum for depth and potential. - UPDATE Tendered Henry Anderson - traded the colts a 7th rounder for him last offseason and he exceeded expectations. Originally thought to be a goner when we switch to a 4-3 but we decided not to so depending on his price tag would be worth keeping Myers - made the probowl a a kicker for us in 2018. No reason not to bring him back even if he fizzled a little at the end of the year Everyone else can kick sand though UPDATE: the following have been tendered. WR Deontay Burnett, LB Frankie Luvu, CB Jeremy Clark and S Doug Middleton. Potential cuts? Not much in the way of cuts but here are some potential ones Crowell - nothing more then a JAG. cutting him saves 3 million (2 million in dead money) and leaves us with maguire and cannon. Obviously a spot we need to address but good RBs are easy to find. Bell is a huge free agent (but i’ve decided i’m not on board for that) coleman is a great option as is the draft or ingram short term but we’ll go after that later Beechum - would save 8 million (1.5 mill dead cap) and could use an upgrade there for sure which will come from the draft, but may be good to keep him on just in case or for depth. If the rookie struggles and plays worse that’s not good for Sam. At least Beechum is a known quantity even if it’s only a decent one Robinson - saves 2 million (no dead cap). Hasn’t done much but is still young and provides depth at CB. probably could be replaced easy with a late round pick though if we really needed the money UPDATE: Not a potential cut but new rumor is the jets if we land an ILB in free agency could look to trade lee who will be on his final year of his rookie contract. won't save any money but interesting for sure. I doubt his value would be any more then a 3rd. Rumor link http://theredzone.org/Blog-Description/EntryId/75509/Jets-hoping-to-move-on-from-ILB-Darron-Lee
Now the fun part! Adding talent, Lets look at our needs Tier 1 WR - currently we only have 2 viable WRs on the roster in enunwa and robbie. I expect to draft one high as well (2nd or 3rd round) peake is a special teams player only who never panned out as a WR and roberts is mainly a returner. Will need to add a veteran WR and draft one here O-line - man our o-line was piss poor. As it stands now we have beechum at LT, Shell at RT, winters at G, that’s it (minus some camp fodder guys who i won’t count). Which makes the case for keeping beechum and bringing back harrison. We will need to add some talent here in the draft and free agency. UPDATE: Traded for OG Osemele meaning now we need a center (paradis would be nice) and an upgrade at LT and/or RT Pass Rusher - the jets D is overall pretty solid at worst, but we’ve lacked a true edge rusher probably since the john abraham days (unless you want to count ellis or pre-injury wilkerson). We need a guy though who can rush the passer consistently without blitzing every down to get pressure and isn’t a low end guy with potential like a luvu. Tier 2 D-line - as it stands now and yeah i know people don’t want to go defense in the draft but we are thin. Williams is back on the tag, and outside of him we have 2 DTs in shepard and foley both who are young and unproven and late round picks. Makes the case for bringing back anderson as well but we will need to add some role players at DE/DT or a late round pick. Need 1 more of each at least RB - maguire and cannon aren’t setting the world on fire. Both looked good in flashes but we need a real play maker. I assume crowell will be gone but this is a position we can address in FA easily so likely not drafting one. Adding a coleman would be great Secondary - bringing back claiborne really helps us as the starters are set, we just need depth. If claiborne walks though we will need a starter. If not we should be good at CB for the year and hope that the young guys (jones, nickerson, robinson, and clark if we resign him) can step up. We do need a back-up safety badly. Only adams and maye are signed. Brooks is gone and middleton hopefully resigns but 3 safeties isn’t enough especially when maye can’t stay healthy Tier 3 Not really needed but more what if’s. Could sign/draft a QB3 or TE3 as backups. Trades I’ll start with potential trades since it’ll be the shortest section and also say all of these will be unlikely except the draft trade Draft Trade - jets need to trade back. We need more picks to rebuild. Looking at the board what makes the most sense is the giants to trade to the jets to move up from 6 and grab a QB. rumor is the cards may take murray 1st overall. Oakland wants a QB at 4 as well which only leaves lock and haskins. The giants can jump oakland to get haskins if he is their guy. We likely won’t get back as much as we paid last year but i would expect at least the 6th pick, 2019 2nd rounder and 2020 2nd rounder. Maybe a later pick like a 4th thrown in as well but for the sake of this post i’ll say a 2nd rounder this year and next year for sliding back 3 picks Antonio Brown - i don’t think anyone questions his talent, but he is turning into a head case who turned on his 2 time SB winning QB who has been a big reason brown has such amazing stats. He’s also 31 and is demanding more money and more guaranteed money. He does instantly fix our WR group but honestly I don’t think he’s worth it to give up a pick and pay that much at this point Kevin Zietler - a 28 year old G who PFF rated as the top pass blocking guard in 2018, the browns are looking to offload him for some reason. He is signed for 3 more years at 10 mil a season for the next 2. Depending on the asking price, if it’s a 3rd rounder or less i’d jump on it as he instantly improves the o-line, won’t cost a ton, and will be a day 1 starter for us and help protect sam and improve the run game EDIT: Zietler is now off the market. good trade for the giants though The Cleveland Browns have traded starting right guard Kevin Zeitler and a 2019 fifth-round pick to the New York Giants for defensive end Olivier Vernon and a 2019 fourth-round pick according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Odell Beckham - yeah he’s a headcase like brown, but he’s also 5 years younger and already locked into a contract for 5 more years and instantly gives us a number 1 WR who can be with sam for a long time. IDK why the giants would trade him but they have been making a lot of dumb and bad moves under gettleman. If they offered odell and the 6th pick for our 3rd pick i’d take that instead. A proven WR like ODB is worth more then 2 draft picks in the 2nd round, one that isn’t even until next year Dee Ford - KC slapped a franchise tag in him but also said they’d move him for a 2nd rounder, if we can get the pick trade with the giants i’d easily give up that 2nd rounder for ford. He has 13 sacks last year is only 28 and instantly gives us the edge rusher we need if we can’t sign one before the draft. Also worth noting is they are shopping houston as well who is more proven but 30 years old. Houston could be outright released though which would make him a good FA signing UPDATE: OG Kelechi Osemele - Jets acquire the formor pro bowl guard (2016 and 2017) form the raiders and a 6th round pick in exchange for a 5th round pick. Good move on the jets to help rebuild the o-line. he'll cost roughly 10 mil in 2019 and 11 mil in 2020 none guaranteed and he's on the right side of 30 currently. With that said he did have a down year in 2018 and missed 5 games with an injury.
Free Agency Time to take a look at potential free agent targets now. I won’t look at anyone who has been tagged or isn’t a need Le’Veon Bell - a tough call to make. He’s a great player with a ton of talent but also benefited greatly from being in such a high powered offense and wants a massive payday. I wouldn’t mind having him, but don’t want to go after him as of now Tevin Coleman - an explosive runner with big play ability. Can’t handle the full load but a great receiver and speed back. Could play the lightning to maguires thunder and be a nice upgrade at RB and only 25 years old and will cost way less then bell Ronald Darby - if we don’t resign claiborne, we could go after darby to start at CB for us Preston Smith - not a high sack number guy but a 26 year old solid 3-4 OLB who is an upgrade over what we currently have. Not really a true edge rusher though Za-Darius Smith - similar to Preston smith but a little better at rushing the passer and not as complete of a LBer. only 26 and has great production as a situational pass rusher Ziggy Ansah - if we don’t resign anderson we have a big hole DE. Ansah would be a great answer to that and also take pressure off williams on the other side Daryl Williams - 26 year old RT who was 2nd team all pro in 2017 but coming off a major injury for 2018. Still he would be a huge upgrade at RT to shell and is someone we should really target hard and then we can keep shell as cheap depth as he would be one of the best back-up lineman in the NFL Trent Brown - 25 year old former 7th round pick (of the niners who traded him to the pats) had a solid 2018 season. I wouldn’t want to break the bank too hard, but signing him means we could release beehcum to offset some of the cost and gives us a young LT. pairing him with williams above would solidify the o-line mostly (just missing a center) and give us more flexibility in the draft Ja-Waun James - 26 year old RT from the fins and former 1st round pick. Good back-up option if we can't get williams WRs - listing them in 1 spot. Nobody who really stands out as worth big money. Tyrell williams scares me and the colts are going to go hard after him. Out best bet is to sign a cheaper solid number 2 or 3 WR and just have an overall good group without a stud antonio brown type WR. Tate is a solid option but 31 and didn’t fit in good with philly. Humpries is only 26 and can be a solid number 3 and played well when called upon in TB. Beasley is a shifty solid WR over the middle but 30 now. John brown is 29. Moncrief will cost more then he’s worth. I’d opt for signing humpries personally and look at stud Wrs next year. Adding humpries would make him the 3 behind anderson and Q and a draft pick would be our WR4 with peake and roberts being the 5-6 and maybe even tay can earn a spot. He didn’t look too awful at the end of last year and has good rapport with darnold form college. UPDATE: Tay has been tendered making him, Q, robbie, and peake our current WR group. I expect to sign 1 and draft one still and maybe bring back roberts as well Matt Paradis - we really need a starting C in free agency and he’s the best option out there. Mitch morse is a fall back option but we need 1 of the 2 for sure Edge Rushers - sadly every good one has been tagged pretty much. Ford, lawrence, clowney all got tagged. Giants release vernon but he didn’t play well at all as a 3-4 OLB so likely will go back to a 4-3 team to play DE. Fowler would likely be the best option out there but if we do sign a few lineman, we could use the 3rd pick on allen or even trade back and land sweat or ferrell. KC may release justin houstin who is 30 but would be a good pick-up as an edge rusher. UPDATE: Houston has been released and could make a good pick up now Draft This is going to change a lot based on free agency and who we sign and what holes we have. For the sake of a way too early mock draft i’m just doing the top 4 rounds and assuming we need to trade back for more pics so going with the giants trading us their 1st, 2nd, and 2020 2nd for the 6th overall pick and didn't fill these positions in FA Round 1 JaWaan Taylor or Jonah Williams - those are the top 2 OT in the draft consensus wise but as a regular dude trying to study o-line prospects with the resources available is a joke so it’s whatever. Take your pick as long as we improve the o-line Round 2 Deebo Samuel or Marquise Brown - both smaller WRs which is what we need. with Q and anderson outside, we need a smaller shifty guy in the middle. Samual is the more well rounded of the 2 and probably the wiser choice and also has value as a KR if we don’t resign roberts, but brown is a pure burner but has a lot of other skills to develop and is pretty dam skinny (only 160 lbs at 5-11). Personally i prefer “football players” over “workout warriors” so i prefer deebo, plus what a cool nickname Round 3 Dalton Risner or Michael Deiter - both listed as 3rd round versatile lineman. Risner is listed as a OT/C while Deiter is listed as a OG/C. either would be drafted based on their ability to play center. Having a “swing” lineman who can play multiple positions is always a good thing to have and center is a huge hole for us. (Note 3rd round has like 4-5 of these “swing style lineman graded so a good round to draft interior o-line) Darnell Savage - 1st 3 picks were offense, but now time to go defense. Even if we bring back middleton we only have 3 safeties and 1 hasn’t played a full season yet. Savage would add us some depth at safety. Round 4 Khalen Saunders - jets are pretty thin on the d-line. Sanders is a 320lb nose tackle who can take the place of mclendon who i assume we won’t resign.
it was maye. i thought he missed a game his rookie season but i guess not. so better to say 1 is coming off a major injury
That would be true and hopefully, he will be back to how he played in his rookie season, he was outshining Adams early doors. A foot injury, a broken thumb and a shoulder injury to end his season, leaves him with questions to answer on the shape of his body, can't really help a broken thumb and the ankle injury was very strangely reported by Bowles as were other injuries throughout the season. Fingers crossed for him and us, as he looked a good draft pick.
yeah he looked like a real good pick his rookie season. hopefully he can stay healthy. a broken thumb doesn't really concern me much it's more of a freak injury. the ankle/foot and shoulder issues are the big concern me. he also had a broken arm in college. hopefully it's just a string of bad luck and not something that continues edit: FWIW middleton hasn't played a full season either and missed most of 2018 with a pectoral injury. really adams is the only safety we can count on right now for 2019
It’s not anger, it’s calling out someone who tries to offer up analysis but refuses to admit they are wrong. Everyone gets it wrong on players, but you blind belief in your delusions makes your posts worthless.
Well I appreciate the write up......it's hard to merge FA signings and draft picks into one post because the outcome of FA will determine who the Jets draft. That's why I've never done one myself. At this point after reading all the gossip and rumors from Indy I think it's safe to assume the Jets are going to go hard after EDGE and RB. I think they're gonna try to sign two EDGE players or at least two bodies for the front seven. They will be in on Bell but Coleman seems like he's becoming the more attractive option - at least to the Jets. Interior OL will be focused on also......along with the usual depth signings. The truth is most of these teams have already had preliminary discussions we've these FAs and their agents. They can't legally talk about it publicly or sign until 3/13 but these teams and players already have a very strong idea of who is signing with who. It is us the fans who are in the dark at this point....I just hope I'm not disappointed with the results as per usual. .
wrong about what lol. baker had a good rookie season, better then i expected for sure. rosen was worse then i expected. allen and jackson and darnold gave me what i expected (except for allens mobility i didn't see that coming). it's 1 year. RG3 and vince young both won ROTY at QB and both fizzled out. If i'm wrong in after year 3 i'll happily admit it. i couldn't care less about being wrong (except darnold obviously i hope i'm not wrong for the jets sake) but the other 4 QBs who cares. They aren't jets and no longer a thought in my mind, I'm only concerned with jets and potential jets right now. Everyone even "paid draft experts" get shit wrong all the time, why would anyone be offended by it or care about being wrong? You just look like an asshole for jumping the gun based on 12 games or so already deciding the career path of rookies and going around attacking other users for a draft analysis. sorry only you look bad here buddy lol
yeah it's a bit early for sure but just looking at all the potential options. I could "build a roster" based on the cap room and options and likely scenerios but at this point it's just a fun guessing game and just being hopeful the jets start winning some games and yeah the jets are going hard after edge and RB, but looking at the options the edge class in the draft is pretty dam good with it being very likely allen or bosa falls to the jets at 3 and there is even sweat who should be a top 10 pick. any of those 3 would be nice to have so if we can build the o-line with FA/trades it gives more draft flexibility. Jets do seem to be going after bell as well but said they won't break the bank. I could see it more likely bell and williams wind up in indy making that offense pretty beastly
