Jonah feels busty to me. #3 seems like prime real estate right now. If Kyler goes first I don't think we can lose. We either 1) trade down (my preference) or Bosa, Allen, or Quinnen is the pick. I'm ok with any of these scenarios. As long as Mac doesnt do anything crazy we should come out of the 1st round feeling damn good about it
Is Quinnon even a fit in a 3-4? His playing style is that of a penetrator & he wasnt asked to stack that much at Bama & when he did while adequate it wasnt exactly his strength..he could serve to be better in his anchor esp for a top 3 pick that would be going to a 3-4 scheme. He’ll also be facing double teams pretty much constantly while he routinely split them the NFL is a whole different ball game. People have suggested he could be like JJ Watt is in a 3-4.Well part of Watt’s success is his 6”11 wingspan which combined w his flexibility allows him to consistently disengage even in a phone booth. Whats quinnon’s wingspan?6”6. This is a 3T/1 gap style player just like LW.Can he play in a 34?Sure.Is it an ideal fit & is he likely to affect the stat sheet? Most likely not. Hes likely just another version of LW/Wlk/Richardson.3Ts cursed w perceived versatility miscast in a 3-4. Think long & hard before wishing for the Jets to draft Quinnon.
Taking Q Williams at 3 would such a SOJ thing to do that I'm fully expecting it to happen. That might just be the nail in the coffin for me.
Except that 9 months ago even Williams himself didn't think he'd be STARTING for Alabama, let alone being an All-Collegiate choice. He doesn't have much college playtime. That is a HUGE red flag to me. He also was 280 pounds a year ago. I want to check his game films against the best teams and OLs in college. He didn't do much against Clemsnon or Georgia for 3 quarters.
Do you know why best player available defensive linemen fall to us like a Leo and possibly Quinnen ? its because the smart teams know you do not take them that high
Just say no to Quinnen Williams. DLs are not game changers. Especially when a team has so many holes. A DT is the biggest waste of a premium pick.
If the jets play a 3-4 (which they announced they will) Q. Williams or any DL MAKES NO SENSE at pick 3!! Williams is a disruptive DL who can pentrate gaps. BUT in a 3-4 defense, the DL is supposed to occupy blockers so LBs make the plays. WHY do you think LEONARD Williams stats are so mediocre after 4 years? Because he also is DL who should be in a 4-3, instead of taking on constant double teams in a 3-4 under toilet bowl. Draft people who fit your scheme--Mike McIdiot does not comprehend that!
I agree. IMO there is NO case for drafting Quinnen Williams, but can understand why he would excite some posters and make them want him on the Jets.
That's rubbish, the Leonard Williams situation was fine. It really depends on the prospect though. Who would you take over Leonard Williams in that draft?
Vic Beasley or Todd Gurley. Vic Beasley was a no brainer. Prior to 2015, we had drafted three 3-4 DEs in the 1st round in like 3 of 4 years. Hadn’t taken an OLB in the 1st, let alone the 2nd, since 2008. It was completely idiotic.
It's almost unheard of for an interior DL to be a game-changer. Aaron Donnell is the rare exception. A top 5 pick MUST be a player who is a game-changer - a QB usually, an edge rusher often, a RB or WR sometimes. And yet, the NY Jets have taken a DL with their 1st pick 3 times in the last 8 years! And even worse, only 1 of them remains, and his value is being debated as to whether he should be re-signed! Honestly, if they draft Q Williams with their 3 pick, they will prove how hopeless they are, and Maccagnan should be escorted from the draft room and off the premises.
Williams has been far more productive then Beasley. Beasley had one season where the majority of his sacks came against backup* lineman. So yeah it wasn't a no brainer as you indicted. If you were a Falcons fan you would be bitchin like the rest of the Falcon fans. They don't want to pay him either. Gurley had knee concerns. So I guess it wasn't a no brainer. Jets made the right pick.
As you stated, Quinnon is NOT a fit for the 3-4, and he would be another Leonard Williams--another real high pick taking on constant double teams-- mail the above post it to Mike McCagnan because he will likely take ANOTHER defensive lineman--he only used THREE of six picks last year also on the DL (counting the 7th round trade).
No, Williams has not been more productive than Beasley. And yes, it is a no brainer to take a 3-4 OLB when we desperately needed one and still do 4 drafts later. At the time we had two 1st round DLs on the roster. We had no one at OLB and that is still the case.
You don't take an outside linebacker with no pass-rush moves that relies specifically on athleticism and one speed move. I doubt you've seen Beasley play because that's exactly who he is. Leonard Williams is a better player and more productive then Beasley and it's not even close. Williams was the pick and THAT is the no-brainer. Sheldon's future was at risk and so was Mos. I have no issue with that addition to this team. Beasley has not gotten better in this league, he's actually hindering that roster. Also, he's not even the best pass-rusher on the Falcons. If you want to complain about outside linebackers, there are other rounds and selections where that need could've been filled, but not at 6 in that draft.
You draft 3-4 OLBs in the 1st round, especially if you don’t have one on your team. You don’t draft 3-4 DEs in the 1st round. 3-4 DL can be filled in almost any round. 3-4 OLBs cannot. Please look on rosters across the league and note the vast difference between 3-4 OLBs in round one and 3-4 DEs in round one. There are probably 10 3-4 OLBs you would take over the three to four 3-4 DEs. 3-4 OLBs change games and are difference makers. 3-4 DEs are not. Plain and simple. If you need an OLB and a DE in the 3-4, you take the OLB 10/10 times. OLB is the most important position in the 3-4. DL, outside of a NT, is not. This is not the 4-3. You win playoff games and even championships with superb, premium pick 3-4 OLBs and DLs of day 3 3-4 DLs. Not the other way around
This is all moot point and has 0 relevancy to Leonard Williams vs Vic Beasley. The draft is based off BPA and need. Jets made the right pick. I don't want an OLB that can't rush the passer against decent lineman and that in a shell is Vic Beasley. Again, how is Vic a better player then Leonard Williams? Why should I take an average to below average pass rusher over a stud defensive lineman that can stop the run and get pressure on the QB? Leo might not get 15 sacks a year, but he's been better for us then Vic Beasley has been for the Falcons.
