No I actually see the teams that go BPA having more success than teams that consistently reach. I dont agree with that assessment at all. I dont think anyone is suggesting we consistently ignore offense either but when the draft shapes up the way it has in this draft, especially picking that high, you dont kist pick an offensive player for the sake of changing the narrative. If we can get amazing compensation to trade back, great, it's a lot more manageable going bpa/need later than it is when your picking top 3 in a draft. You're also ignoring the other ways in which we can improve this team. Trades, FA.. It's not draft exclusive. Who would you take at 3? I ask because unless the compensation is well worth missing out on a FPR, you pick the passrusher. Its foolishness otherwise. Or desperate. IMO
I feel you're underestimating the importance of a FPR. Especially in a 3-4 scheme. If you have both a FQB and FPR. The odds of winning go up significantly. IMO Our value of importance at edge is where we differentiate. For me, I've seen what our team looks like without our FPR and its hurt us every year for as long as I can remember this team running a 3-4 scheme. If we are to continue running this type of scheme, then it's an absolute must we get that high level edge player. IMO
In general i believe in Best player available but i also believe in equal distribution of talent on a roster between defense & offense..and not just in a bubble in one isolated draft but on a larger scale. I also believe nothing is absolute & there must be a human element. And thats what im referring to other teams catching on to & what id like to see the jets do. Smart teams realize that BPA is prudent yet still an imperfect system & there are times when deviation must transpire for all sorts of reasons. If all your resources & top talent is stacked in one direction & it isnt equating to winning at some point it is time to deviate. Ive already acknowledged if we’re staying at 3 we’re forced to draft defense so im saying staying at 3 is not an option.im nlt suggesting reaching at that spot by any means.Trade down.whatever it takes.Lets find an offensive player we like decide his value, find a reasonable landing spot & execute. Thats the Jimmy johnson school of drafting.doesnt apply every year..but at simecpoint the cycle must be broken. What better time than Sam entering year 2 & a new a HC woffensuve background? Enough of shrugging our shoulders at the draft supply while other teams find a way to make scoring or whatever ails them the priority. As for other avenues for addressing the offense..there are rarely quality OL/skill 25 & under available in FA bc other teams dont let those players go.Beyond that building an offense is more systemic than on D..you want to bring in young talent that can grow in your system..bc it isnt quite plug n play like it is on D. There will akways be acceptable defensive talent available in FA.Why?Because pay their offensive players who they drafted. What a concept. A human element is what im asking for. Get creative & give this offense an influx of desperately needed talent.
I don't disagree that FPR is an important player, and that we've been without one for years, but it's not as important as a QB. Let me try putting this another way at the risk of being accused of beating a dead horse. What if the Jets actually realized that having a FQB was the most critical need two years ago, instead of going BPA and taking a Safety? They would be far ahead of where they are now, and might well have been able to get their FPR last year. This is the mindset Kurt ad I are railing against: there is a bias towards defense on this team and it's been there for decades, and what do they have to show for it? It's long past time to "gamble" on offense and get this team SB ready.
I'd love to trade down, but only if we receive proper compensation. In a trade down, I'd be more open to taking a skill player than I would at 3 when we could have one of the top pass rushers. Yes, I'm all for creating hot air to get a team to trade up to our spot. Maybe that's how the Browns took Mayfield(who has looked good so far in the NFL) over Darnold.
We have so many holes Trade down if we get a good offer; failing that BPA (except for QB) The "great Bill Parcells" pass on drafting Orlando Pace because we didn't need him (had Jumbo Elliot); then we passed on Walter Jones (two HoFers in one draft). But hey we got Farrior who won two SB (with Steelers) I wish I trusted Mac
Casserly said Murray bombed his interviews. https://nypost.com/2019/03/05/kyler-murray-backlash-arrives-worst-reports-execs-ever-heard/ Having said that, Casserly also recommended Mac and Bowles so take it for what you will.
If a gm hires and fires a coach in one year, trades up to 10 for a qb and then trades him for a third rd pick as he uses the one overall in the next draft to take another qb it’s going to be really hard to bitch about Mac.
I don’t think we will be limited to trade down options only with teams looking to get a QB, which seems unlikely at best. Assuming Murray goes first(we should all be hoping for this) 2 of Allen, Bosa, Williams are going to be available. I could see many teams wanting to get into position for one of them, especially a team looking to get ahead of Oakland for whichever is left of Allen/Bosa. I am also of the opinion we should be making a trade down the top priority. As much as I like Allen, I would take say Burns and Brown over just Allen, while also adding another pick this year as well as possibly one next year.
IF Murray goes #1, what do you want to do? If a good trade can be made make it, if not select the BPA.... if whatever reason Oakland wants to swap their 4th for our 3rd & throw in this years 2nd & next years 3rd, I say go for it.
Trading back would definitely be the best way to go with all our needs but Williams Allen or Bosa would be hard to pass up at #3... Allen really intrigues me but if Bosa is there you have to take him. Allen is one of my faves in this draft, overall... I think the guy has superstar written all over him.
If Kyle Murray goes one. Most likely Nick Bosa goes two- college tape, and the NFL pedigree .( it matters ) The Jets have a choice between Josh Allen, or Q Williams . Josh Allen fits the Jets scheme much better . Do you risk dropping down to five and losing out out on both Q Williams, and Josh Allen. IT's okay if you would be happy with Montez Sweat , or some other player left on board. It's great to say move back , and accumulate more picks. It sucks if the guy you were targeting is gone too.
If Allen/Bosa & Williams are on the board at 3 the best trade down options are to Oakland @4 or TB @5, assuming one of them wants a QB and the other Williams (or some other player not named Allen or Bosa). Then Jets can have their cake and eat it too (whatever that means).
Agreed....if Murray gets taken #1, then we get a shot at either Bosa or Allen. Now...if Murray goes #1 and the Giants trade their #6 + Odell for the 49'ers #2, we can get a shot at Bosa.
Agree. Hoping Williams is the next Aaron Donald is wishful thinking. We have a chance to take BPA and at a need position. Allen/Bosa help this team so much more.
Williams didn't even think he'd start for Alabama 9 months ago. I am very wary about guys who don't have tons of college playtime.
