This is all ass backwards to me. So you want to guarantee money over 4-5 years so he can check out through the duration of the contract? Because if it's guaranteed and he gets cut, he's still making the guaranteed money and it's still hitting our cap. It makes WAY more sense to frontload a deal and spread minimal cap hits over the rest of the contract. Take a look at Gurley's contract if you want to see how to give a player the money they want up front and still have it not kill your cap right off the bat. Gurley signed a huge extension with the APY a few mil under what Bell wants and he counts $9 mil against the Rams cap this year. He got $22 mil guaranteed at signing... far cry from the $10 mil the Steelers were offering Bell at signing.
It was a $10 million signing bonus, $10 million roster bonus due 7 days later and if given league minimum year 1, he would have collected $20.79 mill year 1, $13 mill year 2. 33 was fully guaranteed at signing. Just to clarify for you, guaranteed at signing, doesn't mean you receive it and I signing. That's the $ you get even if cut. Fully guaranteed is what you get if you play out the contract or are injured
And Gurly counts $17,250,000 against the cap this coming season. Or does that not count? The 1st year money near the same, and Gurly is as good, younger, no arrest, no multiple suspensions, not a locker room cancer.
And that’s unfortunately what comes with the territory of signing a star player. At some point you are going to pony up. The contract can’t be team friendly every year, and really other than 2020 it is. He was super affordable this season and is again this coming season, and in year four they can cut him with a minimal dead cap hit. Would you not sign Bell to the exact same contract structure with what would end up being about $2 million more against the cap per year?
I'd structure Bell to a generous deal with 2 years guaranteed and roster bonus's. He carries significant risk, and I don't think he is the king of player who would mesh with Gase.
Lol dudes here hated Wilk after he cashed in then checked out. Can you imagine the outrage here if the same happens with Bell? Even that dude who hates signature haircuts will crucify Bell and he has a normal haircut and isn't fat.
Well right out of the gate, if your head coach clashes with one of the most talented players in the league then you have the wrong coach and you’ve messed up already. And if you are going to load up the first two years of Bell’s deal to get him the guarantees he wants then you were going to be left with pretty big dead cap hits in years three, four and five if you decide to move on. I know he comes with risk but I also think it’s a little crazy to say it’s more likely than not he comes back into the league and flames out. The guy is supremely talented and only 27 years old. You don’t think there’s a little bit of a chip on his shoulder?
No, I don't think there's a chip on his shoulder. He was offered the richest RB contract in history. He refused it because he wanted to be paid as a #1 Reciever and top RB. He wasn't cut, his ability never questioned. Why would he have a chip? He is all about getting paid. He's selfish, has been a headache in Pittsburgh, well before the holdout. Just because he's talented doesn't meet he's not a cancer. I don't think Gase is the right coach, but for other reasons. As much as Bell can be an asset to Darnold's Development on field he can be as much a hindrance off it. Simple question. Do you believe Bell makes this team a contender?
Not on his own, but he'd give offense a much needed playmaker that opposing defenses have to account for.
We will just have to agree to disagree when it comes to his motivation. I think he knew his worth and there’s no way he was going to let his employer pay him less than what he’s worth. I fully support the player in those circumstances every time. Especially when it comes to football where it can all be taken away in the blink of an eye. Of course I don’t think one player makes this team a contender, but luckily we are in position to just add one player and call it a day. We can sign him to what he wants, and still have over $80 million to spend on top of having the third overall pick and two third rounders. I guess this serves as the reminder for this page of discussion, we can sign bell to the kind of contract he’s looking for and still have plenty of money to sign impact players elsewhere.
Same. I’m terrified of this guy. Ultimately it will come down to grilling the fuck out of him in the on site visit.
Bell is a big receiving threat as well, and that's why he's looking for more money than your average back. If the Jets sign him they aren't just getting a top flight running back, they are also getting a really good receiver (likely a #1 caliber option on this offense). I mean didn't he sit out when he could have made $15m guaranteed on the franchise tag? He obviously thinks he's worth more. I don't know the exact logistics but I thought that was in the ballpark of what he wanted.
Thing is, he's made it clear he's not interested in the Jets on multiple occasions. Has tweeted the colts and Dolphins. The colts made sense, the Dolphins, in full tank mode shows just what his mindset is all about. Getting paid, partying and making rap albums. If anything, he will use Mac to leverage other teams as we have seen before.
Oposing Defenses need to account for every player. Bell had the luxury of a top O line, top tier QB,Multiple top receiving threats. Here, the opposition can afford to sell out to stop him. Don't think he will have near the impact he had with Pitts roster
I propose to structure it however it makes sense and there’s no way for us to know what that is without using a million hypothetical. We also aren’t going to sign that many impact players because that’s just not how FA works. You don’t get the guys you want just because you have the most money.
