Couldn't agree more that the offense should be the focal point. We just wouldn't build it the same way.
The best way to help Sam is to give the opposing D something to worry about so they can’t mask coverages so easily. What does that ,bell or a combo of Coleman and some draft pick? That’s why you pay for bell.
It's as simple as this for me. If you are serious about developing your 21-year-old franchise QB, you give him the best possible options especially when you have the means to do so while not making major sacrifices elsewhere.
I'm not suggesting Bell is not a better option. My problem is his suspension risk, the miles on his wheels and his propensity to be an asshole and a hold out. And paying him $18 million a year on top of that. I'd love Bell but as great a talent as he is, he comes with some concerns.
He’s not going to hold out again. He fought the tag because these guys know they only have that one shot at a second contract to make that big money. The mileage is overstated. He has averaged 16 touches a game now. I haven’t met him so I can’t speak for the asshole part but our nt doesn’t seem to hate him and he shared a locker room so there’s that. And 18 - 20 mil why do I care, not my money and I doubt there’s anyone out there we will miss out on because of bell.
I might be in the minority here but I DON'T WANT BELL. I agree get Sam help but I don't want him. BTW Can a Mod put another option up there I vote N EFFING way.
This this this. Our current guys don't scare anybody, Bell is one of the best offensive skill players in the league and giving him to Darnold is a no-brainer decision. Bell will open up our passing attack, provide excellent pass protection, and will be a safety blanket for Darnold that he lacked all year. Mac needs to pony up because unless he wants to trade a day 2 pick for Brown, he ain't finding anyone better for our young QB than Bell.
He already turned down the Steelers $77 mill with $33 fully Guaranteed over the first 2 years. Gurly only has $21 mill fully Guaranteed. Bell is looking for significantly more than Gurly
THIS^ X 1000%. Bell may not get them to the SB, but he sure does enable Darnold every chance to develop into a SB-caliber QB, and that's the ultimate goal. No one else available provides the legitimate threat that Bell does on every single play. Yes, you MIGHT get some decent contributions from a RBBC, or a lesser RB (as the Steelers did with Conner), but no defense will be forced to change their game plan or coverages because of them. How much is that worth? Open the checkbook. I admit there is risk, but great reward doesn't come without great risk - unless you hit the lottery, and how many here have done that? In the end, I think he doesn't sign here, either because Macc is too cheap, or because he gets a decent offer from a contender, but if it's possible, he should be a Jet.
There's no compensation for a player under the transition tag, the Steelers just get the right to match the offer. The second statement is exactly what you don't do with Bell. No way do you front load his contract and guaranteed money. That ensures you of two things, he coasts under the Guaranteed years and then holds out. Football is not his priority, money is. Once he gets it, he's done
My hold out comment was in the latter part of his deal when all his guaranteed money and his high salary years are gone and he's still a very productive back and he wants even more. I'm thinking Year 3 just as we're about to contend for a SB and he's still playing at a high level and he thinks his $900,000 base salary is not commensurate with his talents even though he's already pocketed 95% of his 3 year deal money in 2 years. And I don't know him at all. But it is very rare that a guy who seems to be a complete asshole in public is actually a very nice and caring dude. When actual teammates call him out in public over money --and we've always heard you NEVER touch another man's money in the NFL--that was very telling. Again, don't get me wrong--I would be ecstatic if we get him--he'll be the most exciting signing and player we've had in like forever. I just have a fear that it could end very badly and I am so sick of kicking myself in the ass about this team.
No NFL player, especially an elite offensive skill position player, is going to agree to a contract that isn't frontloaded. That's just the way it works, and the player isn't in the wrong on this one either. All it takes is one misstep and his career is done. I fully support players getting every dollar they can get as soon as they can get it. And for the team, you can structure the contract to minimize the cap hit down the road if you have to move on. There's probably an out in year 4 like there is in any deal. Frontloading is not an issue in today's NFL.
Here here. You think that photo of Santonio swigging Crystal on the back page of the NY Post was bad? You wait till Bell gets his money.
A year later, Holmes career essentially ended on a non-contact injury. He's the shining example of why players should demand frontloaded contracts with quick payouts. He's also of shining example of how NOT to act after you sign said contract, but the point remains.
I hate shining examples of paying employees for services they never render--whether through their fault or no fault of their own. I hate guaranteed contracts, big up front guarantees, front loaded contracts. That's just me. Buy insurance. Or get another job.
I don’t think this is a realistic view in the situation at all. We’re not talking about construction or carpentry. There’s a reason almost every “star” contract is frontloaded.
The Jets have about a month to put together a deal for Bell This would probably have to be the second biggest move the team has made in 5 years other than trading up for Darnold I am truly hesitant but a deal has to be floated If Mac is smart he'll wait to see what other offers the guy is getting then decide The Market will dictate Ding Dongs value ...he and his agent think they have leveredge here ..but they really don't
That article is correct. As are the numbers you have here. The issue is the structure of how the guarantees were rolled out. The Steelers could have cut him after year one and ate the rest in minimal dead cap hits. He was guaranteed $10 mil at signing, that's it. The other $23 million was guaranteed over the first two years. That means they could have spread it out and moved on if they felt like it.
Funny how many FA contracts are structured with a very minimal hit the first year then isn't it? You even suggested as much in another thread. How we can afford to give Bell what ever he wants and still sign the best pass rusher or two, plus o line. By backloading their deals. You do not front load a contract for a player with bells issues. High milage, injury, and just getting high. Plus the holdouts. He's an elite player who rarely plays an entire season. Once he cashes in, there's a very good chance he checks out.
