I did look up his archive last night, that's why I'm asking you guys to point out one of those articles that isn't fair... I couldn't find one. At least make some kind of case for yourselves! What you said about constantly bashing is not true... he used to gush about the dynasty Yankees every week. In fact when Jeter recently lost the MVP most writeres wasted their time attacking the system... Lupica on the other hand wrote a story praising Jeter and saying whether he wins the award is irrelevant because he and Mo Rivera are great players and NY is lucky to have watched them play... is that Yankee haterism?

I agree there is a balance somewhere between Yes network and the New York Sun... I see writers like Lupica in that balance.

The Yankees are showing some interest in free agent Doug Mientkiewicz.

I'm sure the Yankees goal is to reduce long-term payroll, continue to develop their own young players, so they are in the position to add payroll when they feel it is necessary. Signing a #3 starter for 6 yr. $100M hurts them from making a future signing, and also takes up another long-term rotation spot that can be filled by one of the top prospects.

I'm not here to discuss him personally, I think he is a great writer and he calls it fairly. When you look at his whole career I find it hard to understand how he can be described as a Yankke hater or a Met lover. Like many of us who went to school in Boston he has a love for the town, but I don't mistake that as a love for the Sox... he is a regular critic of theo and the front office circus and pounds Manny whenever he gets a chance. I think he often brings strong unique points to the conversation, such as Pettite leaving for love of Texas and family and then showing back up 3 years later when the price is right. Who else is talking about that right now? I love The Sports Reporters... probably my favorite show on TV, however I can see how he could rub some the wrong way... but isn't that part of his job as a sports editorialist?

Would be a good signing, could battle it out with Phillips, Phelps, and Wilson for the 1B job.

Maybe I only notice the negative articles? I don't read Lupica's stuff much anymore but mayb when i don't read he writes more complimentary stuff. I'll look up his archives when I get a chance. I don't want a writer just to write fluff pieces, I like my teams to be judged fairly but it always seems he is negative even when he shouldn't be.

Not sure... I don't know what you read... but it seems weird to me to say he's lost it and he's not good anymore but then say you don't read him much anymore. Much like 10pen10 basing his opinion on just the past season... I'm not going to defend his personality as there's no right or wrong when it comes to that (and it's not like he's my brother or something and I need to defend him or my opinion of him) but as a sports editorial writer there aren't too many out there better then him doing it weekly like he is.

And the whole point in this is that he brings some food for thought to the table about the Pettite signing.

It's not like I haven'tr ead him for 10 years it's just beein the pst couple of years where I just avoid his columns for the most part. I just thought his columns were bad and not worth the time to read them. I happen to like Steve Serby but I do the same thing w/ his columns, I just avoid them.

Maybe you haven't seen what most Yankees fans have been saying since the Tigers knocked them out NOT to get Barry Zito. I'm not saying Zito can succeed with the Mets, or Sox, or Rangers, whoever. All i'm saying is he would not be good in the Bronx. Being labeled the "Ace", pitching in Yankee Stadium, pitching at Fenway on a more consistent basis, and pitching in the pinstripes in general, would just turn out to be a disaster.

We've seen what New York has done to some players, and to me, Zito is a guy who could not handle it.

I have seen what Yankee fans have written about him and that is my point. There is no arguing that the Yanks with Zito have a better chance to win a WS the next 5 or so years than the Yanks without Zito. He has been in the AL his whole career and has pitched well in the postseason. I agree that he probably won't be worth the money he eventually gets but who cares, if he is signed by the Yanks he is immediately the best pitcher on that staff and the Yanks have a better chance to win a WS.

He would actually be the 3rd best pitcher on their staff if they signed him, and would likely never crack the top 2 over the next 6 years with Wang and 2 (maybe 3) prospects all with higher ceilings than him (2-3 more at the back end of his deal). Even if only 1 or 2 of the 6 reaches their potential, that makes him a #3 for $16M. It would make no sense.

Why would anyone be interested in Carla? I'm so disgusted with him man, I was happy when the Yankees got him, just turned my head to his great year in his contract year...

But jeez has he been piss, i'm just expecting next month to see Pavano's next injury.

Zito would not be right for the Yankees. Steinbrenner would emasculate him. Look what happened to Jack McDowell. He was a man before he went to the Yankees. Jason Giambi used to be cool. Then he went to the Yankees and became a geek.

Zito is a goofy guy. He doesn't fit with the Yankees. It's just not right. He should not be robotized.
