I think Gase had too much control in Miami & it could have been detrimental to his coaching the team. I think Mac helping Gase choose his coaches is putting less pressure on him. The Jets have a structure where the front office handles personnel. Gates was at his best when he was coaching with less responsibility. I believe they gave him full control in his second year in Miami. Gase...just stick to coaching & let the front office do their work. I believe he has learned from his time in Miami & has accepted his new role on the Jets working with Mac.
I don't really care what these writers opinions are to be honest. It's very clear that McCarthy wanted the Jets job, as it has been reported numerous times - including how that he got the news from the Jets that they are going in a different direction at a restaurant and his family being happy that he gets to stay home this year. Bottom line: Jets chose a different guy, as simple as that. Let's not make it any more complicated than that.

My dad called me yesterday to talk about the playoffs.... and bitch about the Gase hiring. While I'm not all that excited about it, there really hasnt been any other coach hired that excites me either, so like I told him "Can it really be much worse than the past few seasons? Can't get much worse than 4-12"

You're certainly correct: stubborn, out-of-touch, lifeless, and 4-12 would be worse. But I don't think that he'll be around that long if his record stays that way. EDIT: I don't know if Gase will be good either, but for our sakes, I really hope that he's better than Bowles.
He's already better than Bowles. I'm not worried about that. Didn't you see him severely outcoach Bowles like every time they matched up? I'm worried about a lot of things with him, but he's already proven he's better than the last guy. And I know that's not saying much
