Josh Allen, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, believes he should go No. 1 in the 2019 NFL draft. But another Josh Allen may be chosen even higher in the 2019 draft. Just ask Josh Allen. Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen, not to be confused with the former Wyoming quarterback, told reporters after the Wildcats’ Citrus Bowl victory over Penn State that he believes he should be the first player selected in the April draft. With his play in 2018, he certainly made a great case. Allen added three more sacks in Tuesday’s 27-24 win over the Nittany Lions, giving him 17 for the season. Allen also had four tackles, including three tackles for loss, and a blocked field goal. For the season his numbers look like this: 88 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss and 17 sacks. Pretty good, huh? The 6-foot-5, 260-pound senior won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts. Allen also took the Nagurski, Bednarik and Lott awards back to Lexington. Next is the NFL. Allen is among a slew of talented pass-rushers in this class. Other potential first-rounders include Ohio State’s Nick Bosa, Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell (if he declares), Florida’s Jachai Polite and Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat, among others. This year also presents a great group of interior linemen as well, highlighted by Houston’s Ed Oliver, Michigan’s Rashan Gary and Alabama’s Quinnen Williams (if he declares). With the quarterback class weakened by Oregon’s Justin Herbert deciding to return to school, Allen could propel himself to that No. 1 spot held by the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona drafted Josh Rosen out of UCLA to be its quarterback of the future last year, so that helps Allen’s chances for sure. Only 113 days until we find out.
If the Jets do take Allen it would be a little funny to hear the announcers say Josh Allen sacks Josh Allen.
I can't see the 49ers taking yet another interior DL 2015: Arik Armstead (1.17) 2016: DeForest Buckner (1.7) 2017: Soloman Thomas (1.3) I could see them taking Bosa or Allen though. Hopefully they'll trade out to a QB needy team so we can get Allen.
I concede that that’s the biggest issue and why bosa/Allen is the chalk. Don’t discount the cardinals as sellers either though.
I follow the 49'ers closely, I see nothing indicating they WOULDN'T take those guys -- so far -- but will watch closely and report back. Their beat/columnist guys have a good indication of what is happening. SanFran really may want to trade back for picks. They lost out on Reuben Thomas bigtime and also Solomon Thomas is at best adequate/average and teetering above bust (though he had some personal issues to deal with, sister died ). Could AZ stretch for an OL to protect Rosen ? If so, we could get Bosa at #3 -- two years in a row, we luck out at #3, our new lucky number !!
No one is going to call the 9ers, first call will be to the cardinals who will definitely look to trade that pick.
That would be a nightmare for us. I don't want that Bama DT Williams, which we will undoubtedly pick.
So how are these guys going to help protect Darnald and improve our OL play? What round do we hope to draft any OL or have we forgotten how shit we are in that department.
No one has forgotten but this isn’t a supermarket where you pick what you need and all things are equal. You take what the draft gives you and at 3 it’s likely giving us a much needed edge rusher.
It was never going to give us an OL where we were going to end up, I thought the consensus was to trade down for more picks and grab us a top left tackle to protect Sam? I do realise we also need a guy likely to pressure the opposing QB but I think we need to protect Sam more urgently and try and pick up the other in FA or lower down the draft. Bosa or Allen would normally be ideal any other year tbh
We can’t just assume we can trade down. It takes demand to get to the top for a coveted player that the team does not need. Right now, I don’t see that player on the board. With the cards and the 9ers also believing they have their qb no team is going to try to work a deal with us. The cards will have first shot at moving down and probably wil be the ones to make a deal. Unless the kyler Murray hype train really gets going there won’t be a push for another team to come up.
