Oh man enough with this already. Don Shula spent 13 with Marino and had NO Superbowls, Sean Payton has 1 with Drew Brees in 12 seasons, Peyton Manning couldn't even keep 1 coach!

It's such a lazy thing to say.

Agreed! They should have canned him years earlier and hired a better coach. He won in 1972 and 1974 and hen never again! Decades wasted!

It’s far lazier to say “he won a super bowl, let’s hire him!” How about the Jets go get Brian Bilick? Lack of understand!

After the past four years the landscape here looks like Chernobyl.

This is the REAL issue. The GM should be hiring his coach and going down with the ship. Not the damned owner having a say in the coach WITH the GM.

Would you want Sean Payton? He hasn't made the SB with Drew Brees in 9 years.

A franchise QB and great coaching doesn't guarantee Super Bowls -- there is an element of luck built into it, in that you need all of the things to fall in your favor (injuries, personel decisions, playmaking, etc...)

Having a franchise coach and QB puts your team in "contention" year in and year out. It's basically giving you more dice to roll.

It's not that easy to win SB even with a great QB. Brady is anomaly. Look at even Manning - 1 SB when he was great for so many years (the other was not QB related for the purposes of this argument). There are plenty of great QBs that only won 1 or 2, or none. Phillips, Ryan, Brees. GB was competitive every year with Mike and actually won one. This year was bad - some of it were injuries, some Mike's performance. That's why he is not perfect. But he is a heck of a lot better body of work than any one else I am hearing about.

If this is true and they choose Rhule over Mcarthy it’s becaue Rhule is not a threat to the scrap heap we have for a GM.

With the duel accountability structure in place, Mcarthy would expose Macs inability to scout and draft offensive personnel and Mac would be looking for work in no time.

Rhule is a yes man who can be thrown under the bus by Mac when his OTJT fails.

I actually disagree with the GM being the sole power structure in an organization.
If you want to develop organizational consistency like Pitt or GB, you can't have everything single threaded through one personality or vision.
The GM and HC should be judged independently on their performance.

I've seen people suggesting hiring Monken as Rhules OC. Wouldn't it make more sense to hire Monken as HC so he cant be poached after next season if he does well as OC? Then Sam would be on his third OC in three years. Thought this whole coaching search was going to be based on Sam's development.

I think Sean Payton gets a pass for the league destroying the franchise for years with the “bounty gate” disgrace that was overturned by former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Good coach, very unfair!

Jets fans are fed up with losing. McCarthy wins many more games than he loses. He's a big boy in a tough business; I believe he'll do just fine in New York. As long as he wins.

Agreed, Manning had bad coaches, putting him with a McCarthy would have been even worse for his career.

On that note, Herm's experience prior to becoming the Jets' HC: DB coach and Scout. He was never even a coordinator in college or the pros. I can't think of a less "safe" hire for a HC in the history of the NFL.
