I don’t know how it’s taking so long to sign McCarthy after he publicly stated he ONLY wants to coach here. Sign that beast today

Yeah, there is actual hesitance with McCarthy. And I think it's smart of the Jets to not feed into those remarks.

Think there's doubt that McCarthy can evolve to where the game is now. The fact that Green Bay cut ties with him during the season is a BIG deal to me. Green Bay is a very stable and structured franchise....it would have to be a good reason for them to invite in season drama like that. So that worries me....

I want to be comfortable with MM, because on paper it should be a no brainer. He is experienced, has a SB ring and is an offensive minded HC. But there has to be stuff behind the scenes that's giving people doubt.

No, not even remotely. What was safe about them? Herm, Mangini, Rex and Bowles were all first-time HCs. They had to learn on the job and work out their systems. We obviously have VERY different definitions of what the word "safe" means. IMO in reference to hiring a HC, "safe" means hiring a retread, a candidate with NFL HC experience (at least 3 years) who is a known quantity, and his positives far outweigh his negatives. He may not have a high ceiling, but he has a high floor, or at least one that is higher than a first-time HC who is a complete mystery. No first-time HC is a "safe" hire. How could it be? No one (including them) know what they will do or how they will go about doing their jobs, and what level of success they might have.

Conversely, just because a retread has experience and is a known quantity doesn't mean he is "safe." I wouldn't qualify Adam Gase, Haley, Whisenhunt, the OC in NE, Dom Capers, Rex or any of the other former HCs who are out there. They are known quantities, but their negatives far outweigh their positives, or their personalities are causting.

Pete Carroll wasn't a "safe" hire for USC after his fiascos in NY and NE, but he was a "safe" hire for Seattle, because he had had time to reflect, realize his mistakes, and make changes while he was HC of USC. Gase wouldn't be a "safe" hire, either. Since he is somewhat of a known quantity, he would be "safer" than a first-time HC, but he hasn't had time to reflect on his mistakes/failings in Miami. He would only be safe after some period of reflection IF he was brutally honest with himself as Pete Carroll was, learned, grew and changes some of his approaches. Weeb Ewbank and Bill Parcells were "safe" hires for the Jets. Richie Kotite wasn't a safe hire, even though he was experienced and had some success in Philly. That success was because of the players he had in Philly, not because of him. Andy Reid was a safe hire for the Chiefs. Dick Vermeil was a safe hire for the Rams. Bill Belichek was only a "safe" hire for NE if during his interview process he admitted what he had done wrong in Cleveland and had made changes in his philosophy/approach, or if his approach in Cleveland was exactly what NE was looking for. Jim Harbaugh probably wouldn't have been a "safe" hire. I believe McCarthy would have been "safe" in that he would have cleaned up the dumb penalties, lack of discipline, game planning would have been better, his routines are established, he supposedly helped Rodgers develop, and that he would have enabled us to at least reach the level of mediocrity. The unsafe aspects of him are the CS he might put together, his poor game and clock management, and his possible stubbornness, inflexibility, and trying to run the same conservative offense here he did in GB.

It is, but only a marginal one, and for all intents and purposes, it really isn't an improvement when luck or injuries can make the difference between those records..

WFAN is reporting that the Browns offered McCarthy the job but he had to keep Kitchens as OC. This is why he turned it down. So can we drop the no one wanted him narrative?

I disagree. I don't think he has enough experience and is ready to be a HC. I think his mouth is writing checks his rear end isn't going to be able to pay.

Would be very intrigued to see Matt Rhule as HC of the Jets with Todd Monken or Adam Gase as the OC and Gregg Williams as the DC. Would be a college Coach with an uber-experienced pro staff
    ---

This is the nightmare scenario I explained earlier. Rookie HC, 2 experienced coordinators eyeing a HC job in 2020, leading Darnold to 3 OCs in 3 years.
