Could be true. Honestly I think if he was really truly interested in the job there wouldn't have been an interview reschedule in the first place I actually have no feel for who Cleveland is going to hire
Like any coaching candidate, McCarthy will only get what teams are willing to pay him. The Jets owners HAVE traditionally been cheap with their coaches, that's correct. But McCarthy is not getting $7 million unless some team is willing to give it to him. I don't believe Cleveland is willing to pay him that much and if Cleveland ain't and the Jets ain't, no one in 2019 is. He can sit out a year I guess or he can take the $4.5 million here. I'm willing to bet he takes the Johnson's offer instead of sitting at home
They have meddled to some extent, but they have not been as troublesome as other owners. The Tebow thing...whatever that team was doomed anyway due to a lack of talent. Having Tim Tebow on it or not, we were still destined for 6-10 And the Favre thing was actually working quite well until the injury. That wasn't an idiot move. I love Chad but he was not the long term answer either. From a football standpoint that was not a dumb move
Also McCarthy could see going into the AFC East a lot more desirable than a division with the extremely well run Steelers and Ravens. The Bengals were also quite competitive there for a good 5-6 year run though it never translated to the playoffs. Bills are going nowhere with Allen. Dolphins are in QB purgatory and they have no coach either. A franchise in transition. NE is still very good but they showed to clearly be in decline this year. I'd rather go into the AFC East if I were him
Not true. When the Packers had a good TE, they used him. They haven't had a good one in years. Ever hear of Bubba Franks? His career was winding down when McCarthy was hired, but he still had 25 receptions in 2006 and 18 in 2007 even though he only played in 8 games. Donald Lee? His seasons overlapped with both Franks and Finley. He had seasons of 10, 48, 39, 37, and 11 catches. He was a backup in some of those seasons and started in others. Jermichael Finley? In six seasons, Finley had 223 receptions, 2,785 yards and 20 TDs. During those seasons the Packers had Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson and James Jones at WR and yet the TEs were still used.
I don't think what Woody has paid past coaches is a good barometer to what he's going to do regarding our 2019 search. We've only hired 1st time coaches in the past This is the first time we're in on an experienced long term winner. This changes everything and I think Johnson understands this is not like when we settled for Bowles or when we plucked Mangini from New England (plus the franchise is in a completely different place too) This guy has a real track record and he needs to be compensated accordingly because of it.
They probably bought Gase a sub sandwich & an ice tea, then took Mccarthy out to wine & dine him at the best restaurant in town.
I have a hunch that Cleveland wants John Harbaugh and willing to depart with some draft picks. We on the other hand can not afford that.
OK. The more I read about MM the more I want him . Having said that, my fear is not his play calling, but his connections and ability to put together a great CS. Bowles was absolutely dismal in that department.

A player trade, probably not, but if Harbaugh isn't that happy in Baltimore and the new GM wants to put his mark on the franchise by hiring his own GM, they could. Cleveland has its regular 7 draft picks, but could afford to give up their first in 2019 and 3rd in 2020. To get out of a situation where Harbaugh wasn't going to sign an extension (if that's the case) and would leave after the 2019 season, and give their new GM the opportunity to hire his own HC, I think they'd do it. That extra 1st and 3rd would help Baltimore add some more pieces around Jackson.
Hopefully our brass has a "strong feeling" after spending last 2 days with MM, if he has impressed them, make your move ASAP, this will allow him to move early on a staff. There is going to be a ton of assistants moving all over the league with this many openings. As far as the pay, the Johnsons shouldn't be concerned if it is 5 million or 10 million, if it fills up the stadium, while turning this franchise into a winner!!
