Interest in beer in Iberia (Spain and Portugal) has exploded, and in particular I've heard things about some dark beers. I've heard good things about Sagres Preta, and it should be available in the US (Sagres is one of the two big breweries in Portugal). I'll be in Portugal this summer, and I might try one (although as I already mentioned I'm much more a pilsner-style person). You might find Alhambra Negra (Spain) around also.
My current favourite is King Goblin special reserve [6.6 percent] from Wychwood Brewery https://www.wychwood.co.uk/beers/ Only problem is, its far to easy to drink too much of it
Dark beers in Portugal are very easy to come by. I've been to Porto and Lisbon, love Portugal. I can recommend a great restaurant for octopus in Porto.
That my second favourite from there and I can highly recommend the brewery tour there too - went down there last May
Only £12 and that includes loads of free samples. They just brew there now as their bottling and casking is done by Marstons, who own them now. Some nice t-shirts and sweatshirts there too.
I will be in Guimaraes, which is outside of Porto, and I'll be staying in Porto an extra day. I love octopus. Tell me more, por favor.
Not that I think there is anything wrong with Yuengling but to think it is the be all end all in a conversation about beer just exposes someone who obviously has not broadened their horizons.
Camafeu is the restaurant. Just a door on a square, then up the stairs. Honestly, mate, the octopus was amazing. I'd do a port tour too. I think they're all pretty much the same, but I'm no expert, so take any advice about that. The train station is great too, mosaic tiling on the walls. Try to find the smallest house in Porto! The catacombs are worth a visit, as is the cathedral and, if you have time, the tram out to the beach (small beach)... I've dozed off in the sun there before.
Updated now for my current stock, it was a long night, topped off with some White Widow and Evolab Bluberry
I was in Porto and Guimaraes a couple of years ago. My brother lives in Porto now, married a Portuguese woman and has two young kids there. Awesome place. I'm super-jealous.
I'm taking the train into Porto and staying at a hotel nearby (so of course the Cathedral isn't far either). I was figuring on doing the hop on-hop off bus. Are the catacombs you're referring to the ones at Igreja de Sao Francisco (St. Francis Church)? Camafeu is only about a 15 minute walk from my hotel. I've looked up reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor, and everyone says that the octopus is the best they've ever had. Sounds like I have my dinner plans all set up! And the narrowest house is about 2 minutes from the restaurant!
