Didn't you get the memo... Being racist is en vogue now... One thing is certain, no way in hell the Jets will hire another Black HC anytime soon. It would be easier to sell hiring Rich Kotite to the fanbase.
Dan Campbell went 5-7 as interim HC coach for Miami after Philbin was fired. That along with working for Sean Payton as TE/Asst HC the past 3 years has elevated him to the point where he's getting HC opportunities.
I look at Anthony Lynn as a good example of when to hire a RB coach who has tons of potential when you already have an established QB. It's much more risky in this case.
I don't want any part of any of the three--but looking at their records, Koetter has more and better offensive coaching experience than does Monken. Koetter: Highland HS (1983–1984) Head coach San Francisco State (1985) Offensive coordinator UTEP (1986–1988) Offensive coordinator Missouri (1989–1993) Offensive coordinator Boston College (1994–1995) Offensive coordinator Oregon (1996–1997) Offensive coordinator Boise State (1998–2000) Head coach Arizona State (2001–2006) Head coach Jacksonville Jaguars (2007–2011) Offensive coordinator Atlanta Falcons (2012–2014) Offensive coordinator Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015) Offensive coordinator Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016–2018) Head coach Monken Grand Valley State (1989–1990) Assistant Notre Dame (1991–1992) Graduate assistant Eastern Michigan (1993–1997) Defensive backs coach & wide receivers coach Eastern Michigan (1998–1999) Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach Louisiana Tech (2000) Running backs coach & receivers coach Louisiana Tech (2001) Wide receivers coach Oklahoma State (2002–2004) Passing game coordinator & wide receivers coach Louisiana State (2005–2006) Passing game coordinator & wide receivers coach Jacksonville Jaguars (2007–2010) Wide receivers coach Oklahoma State (2011–2012) Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach Southern Miss (2013–2015) Head coach Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016–2017) Offensive coordinator/Wide receivers coach Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2018–present) Offensive coordinator
Im not sure how much this matters but for experience for experience sake. Who is the better leader? Who is better gameplanning?Teacher? Etc I love what fitzpatrick said about monken as a leader.I despise fitz but what he said changed my outlook on what he brings to the table. This appears to be an offensive mind w an aggressive innovative approach but beyond is a great communicator & leader who commmands a ton of respect
Like stats, resume doesn't tell the whole story. Koetter's been a pretty bad HC with the Bucs. He was a very successful HC with Boise St., but much less so with AZ St. He seems to have been a very good OC with the Jaguars, but then much less good or effective with the Falcons prior to joining the Bucs. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the best thing that Koetter has going for him is that he has more experience overall and more experience as a HC than Monken. Monken may not be all that, either. I'd still rather roll with him than Kingsbury or most of the other names aside from McCarthy. But like Big Cat and Stokes, I mean Rollo Tomassi, say, we're all just guessing. I just want the Jets to get it right.
I guess the issue I'm seeing is that want a sure-thing--a coach who can change the culture and won't have to undergo OJT, but they don't actually want the guys who best fit that description (Lewis, Caldwell who have both won with sub-par franchises), rather, they want a guy who can win it all and win big, but they don't want to take the risks necessary to find that needle-in-the-candidate-haystack. That's what perturbs me about my fellow Jets fans: they never want much, just the tiniest amount of impossible.
LOL What, you want consistency and rational thought regarding the Jets? I'd be ok with Caldwell, but not Lewis. The Bengals have had better talent than a number of teams during his tenure, but have never done anything with it. I think he's way overrated.
To me Lewis took the Bungles who had the top draft pick every year, and turned them in to a solid franchise that was in the playoff hunt every year. He took a bad franchise and turned them into a solid, but not championship franchise. He's like a "B+" version of Marty Schottenhiemer, who did the same thing for the Browns, Chiefs, Redskins, and Chargers.
Some fans want a vet, others want to take a chance on a young guy. Nobody's contradicting themselves.
I'd agree that he turned the Bengals into a solid team, but imo he was severely limited. He couldn't win big games. I also didn't like that he seemed to welcome a lot of thugs and low character types on his team. I'll give him kudos for turning the Bengals around, but I want no part of him for the Jets.
What's telling is when Steve Keim who is white hired Wilks Keim was extended when he wasn't a lame duck GM. Wilks is canned with 3 years remaining on his contract and Keim, who's white is retained after a DUI over the summer and hiring Wilks. I'm not saying that's racist, but it is a different standard of accountability by the owner. Now Mac didn't hire Bowles but again Mac who's white isn't being held to the same accountability standard. I have always been a big Todd Bowles fan but I do believe it was time to move on. I also think it was time to move on from Mac for the same reasons. I feel the same way about the Cardinals. SK should have been canned along with Wilks.
Racism is in vogue only in certain quarters or segments of our society. I sure hope that you're wrong about the bolded. A candidate's skin color should have no bearing whatsoever on whether or not a candidate is hired.
Considering nearly all coaches will fail and get fired, it only stands to reason that the morenkavk coaches hired will end with more black coaches getting fired. Having this many black coaches to fire actually reflects the lack of racism in the league on the hiring front.
Agreed--I'm not advocating hiring him. I just find it disingenuous that some folks who want to hire an experienced NFL HC to avoid OJT don't want Lewis, who would be the safest choice of all.
Black, White, if you're not getting the job done, get someone in there that can. Now the question comes into play just by what standards are coaches being judged. From what I see, the Owners have found a way around the Rooney Rule and for all intents and purposes, that rule is no longer in effect.
There’s nothing racist about speculating that a minority coach is getting interviews because of a rule designed to get minority coaches interviews. Race being a component of the discussion doesn’t mean anyone whose opinion differs from yours is racist. Your disliking an opinion isn’t the definition of racism.
