I don't think that McCarthy will announce that he's taking the Cleveland job until he's interviewed with the Jets. There's no downside for him to take a few days, get more complete information about the market for his services, and maintain good relations among the NFL owners' circle. Hearing out Chris Johnson and the Jets is just a smart move. (And it also allows the Browns to satisfy the Rooney Rule, if they haven't already.) That said, I think it's a toss-up between here and Cleveland. If he likes and is more comfortable with Dorsey than McCagnan, that might sway him. If he think that Darnold might be easier to mold than Baker, that also might factor in. His Pitt roots might also sway him towards the Browns (maybe?), but winning a Championship in NYC might also impact his decision. I don't think it's a done deal yet, but I think that McCarthy picks the Browns.
If you're talking about the Packers, they haven't had the best team in football one time, much less multiple times.
You can't just look at that. You have to look at the holes and injuries the Packers have had. Most of that time their D has not been very good at all. They haven't had a quality TE or RB in a long time. Their OL has had a LOT of injuries and they have let some of their own better FAs walk. McCarthy might not be the best HC for the Jets, but he's one of the better candidates available imo. The only candidates I'd take over him are Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh, and possibly Jim Harbaugh and Todd Monken.
McCarthy, at 10-8 has a 0.556 Playoff Win percentage. Jim Harbaugh, Bill Callahan, Ken Whisenhunt, Rex Ryan, Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher and Brian Billick are the available guys who have better playoff win percentages and are not currently HCs, not currently dead, and not currently ancient (see John Madden, Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, Joe Gibbs, George Seifert, etc.) Of those, maybe Whisenhunt or Callahan are possibilities. I don't see many on this board getting excited about them.
After working with the strong ego Rogers, I think McCarthy will stay clear of Mayfield & consider working with Sam a God sent.
Being a Wisconsin native, it's incredibly amusing to me seeing some of these posts talk about the Packers lol. I don't disagree with most of it, so good on you fellow Jets fans. I'll toss in a little fun fact I didn't mention in my previous posts. When the Packers won the SB in 2010, they had a record 15 players on IR. Not only were they the 6 seed, but they were playing many men down. Impressive.
Me either. My problem is that I don't want any of the guys anybody else is throwing around, either. I'd rather have somebody I've never heard of than McCarthy or Caldwell.
Every experienced HC candidate will have warts, but won't need to learn on the job. Every novice HC candidate has as a higher chance of being the next Todd Bowles than they do of being the next Sean McVay. That's how I view it.
I voted undecided. I really DON'T want him but I fear the Jets hiring Caldwell or Lewis more. They could do worse than McCarthy much, much worse. Thing is I feel they can do better than McCarthy much, much better.
If Darnold ends up being a generational talent like Rodgers, I'd think we'd be pretty disappointed in only 1 Super Bowl appearance. This is a SB starved franchise, and yes, we'd all be quite grateful, pumped, excited, etc. for 1 SB victory after all these years, but I want someone who can turn the Jets into a consistent winner. I don't want to only get there once with a generational talent at QB and if the team happens to be just perfect that one year.
The most Seattle folks here think highly of McCarthy. From fans to sports writers, they were actually surprised that he was fired. They do think that he will be a good choice for the Jets or the Browns. We shall see. I think all these candidates have some question marks and unknowns.
Not me. IMO getting an experienced HC who doesn't have to learn on the job is THE most important aspect. I'm fed up with novice HCs who are having to learn on the job and making it up as they go along. We've been there done that a gazillion times, and imo it's insanity to think that things will be any different if we go down that road again. With such a young team, we need an experienced, steady, disciplined hand to shape the team's culture. If we go with an experienced HC and he fails, so be it. At least we'll have tried something different.
10-8 in the playoffs is really good. Most coaches don't have anywhere near that amount of playoff games under their belt, let alone 10 wins. You can't just look at the win % and compare it to people that have barely even made the playoffs. The only one comparable/better than those #s is John Harbaugh, and it's not looking like he will be an option. Bill Callahan literally made the playoffs once in his career, Rex only made it twice. Most of the guys you listed only made the playoffs a handful of times, so it's a bit unfair to cite a 4-2 record in the playoffs as better than 10-8. It takes far more to play in 18 playoff games and have a positive win % than to have a couple fluky runs.
This is exactly how I feel. When you have missed the playoffs for 8 straight seasons, hiring the safe pick in McCarthy makes sense.
As I said in another thread, if they haven't satisfied the Rooney Rule they're morons, since they had two months to interview all of the out-of-work coaches they wanted to.
I don't think McCarthy is going to want to work under Mac and CJ, the two buffoons. Probably get burned out after the first training camp. I would rather we go after a young offensive minded coach with energy who is creative. Then hire a top-notch defensive coordinator.
They interviewed Bieniemy today. Good credentials as a possible HC choice, and satisfies the Rooney rule.
For every McVay or Nagy out there, there are 100 Todd Bowles'. Odds of hitting a great HC by hiring a coordinator with no HC experience is slim. Odds of hitting a winning coach by hiring a coach with over 10 years of winning track record is pretty high. I'm tired of coordinators who don't pan out; hire the guy with the winning record. 10-8 in the playoffs means he gets the team to the playoffs regularly!
