He's a "Pittsburgh guy"...pretty much the same as Cleveland in many ways. When you look at it objectively, there's way more upside, and way less risk, in taking the Browns job.

He may have scheduled the Jets second so he could check out Cleveland, we could get our Rooney rule candidate out of the way so when he comes to NJ he has the opportunity to sign if it's as he perceived. I can't imagine he hasn't talked to anyone in these organizations till recently. Cleveland hasn't had a coach for a while and Bowles leaving was a foregone conclusion.

I think he wouldn’t take an interview during the season out of respect to Williams. Coaches are a tight nit community.
I think he likes Cleveland better as a location but may prefer darnold to mayfield. More of a prototype qb ,better fit for his west coach scheme.

Who knows, but I actually think the fact that Cleveland got pushed in first could be very telling. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Dorsey had been in touch the past couple of months (no rules against it), and he then called Dorsey after getting the Jets interview saying "I'm very interested in working with Darnold, so if you want me you'd better get off your ass." Boom, an interview is scheduled immediately. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets hired on the spot, assuming that the Browns have already fulfilled the Rooney Rule stuff (they're morons if they haven't since they've had two months to interview all of the out-of-work coaches around).

I feel McCarthy is using us the exact same way Cousins did last year

I don't. I honestly think he's intrigued by having a 21-year-old QB with tons of talent to mold, plus money out the wazoo to spend on guys to put around him, plus the third pick. Also not having to answer to anyone except the owner probably helps.

Here's a TB article on Monken getting the much coveted Manish Mehta endorsement...

New York Daily News: Todd Monken is best candidate for Jets head-coaching job
If the Jets are looking for a coach capable of getting the most out of a young quarterback, the Bucs' offensive coordinator might be the best choice.

Could the best head-coaching candidate for the Bucs be right in their own backyard?

If they're looking for a coach capable of getting the most out of a young quarterback, offensive coordinator Todd Monken might be the best choice, at least in the mind of New York Daily News columnist Manish Mehta.

Dirk Koetter turned over playcalling duties to Monken, so why not the head-coaching reins?

But Mehta isn't talking about the Bucs. He's referring to the Jets.

"Monken might be the best and smartest option available for a franchise desperately searching for the right person to unleash Sam Darnold's prodigious talents," Mehta writes.

Monken will travel to New York to interview with the Jets on Monday, the Times' Rick Stroud reports.

In Tampa Bay, Monken called plays for an offense that set numerous club records and was among the best in the NFL.

Apparently, it did not go unnoticed.

"The Buccaneers offensive coordinator's aggressive and creative schemes created plenty of chatter in NFL circles this year," Mehta writes.

Monken received a strong recommendation from Bucs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who — under Monken — became the first QB in NFL history to pass for more than 400 yards in three consecutive games.

"I'm telling you, he's got it," Fitzpatrick told the Daily News. "He's got the 'It factor' as a head coach. He's smart enough. He's a big-time offensive coach. If that's what they're looking for, then it'll be good for Sam (Darnold)."

Fitzpatrick said he was a more confident quarterback when Monken was calling plays. Monken's progressive scheme is a great fit for today's NFL, and his energy, honesty and consistency make him respected around the locker room.

"He's a bright offensive mind that has a good feel for the NFL now and where the NFL is heading," Fitzpatrick said. "If you need more proof, look at me.

"He brought out the best in me, and I think he has a way of doing that for quarterbacks. If you're trying to build a franchise around a young quarterback, I don't know if there's a better choice than this guy."

The Jets have already interviewed a minority candidate, Eric Bieniemy.

At this point, my preference for the new HC is as follows:

    1. Mike McCarthy
    2. Todd Monken
    3. Jim Caldwell
    4. Dave Toub

If Mike Tomlin or John Harbaugh become available, then he immediately goes to the head of the list.

If McCarthy gets hired by Cleveland and Greg Williams is cut loose, he would be 1b to Todd Monken's 1a and be preferable to either Caldwell or Toub.

I have zero interest in Zac Taylor, Kliff Kingsbury or anyone of that ilk.

Honestly, at this point, I don't know what the hell my list looks like. Every time I think its McCarthy I tell myself it didn't work out with Rodgers, how the hell is it gonna work out here... every time I think it's Monken I tell myself we need the experienced head coach... every time I think we need an experienced head coach I think ugh please not Caldwell let's go for the young hotshot in Kingsbury... every time I think should go with Kingsbury I tell myself we need to go with the guy who has the proven track record in McCarthy.

One big shitty cycle. I guess the one good thing is I won't be too happy or too disappointed.

The cool thing about this is that the fans and media don’t know shit about head coaching hires. We’re usually a lot more accurate about draft picks/personnel decisions but we’ve been exposed as having no fucking clue what we’re talking about when it comes to “grading” or “ranking” head coaching hires.

Most people are basing their opinions on this shit based on quick google searches and superficial resumes.

I’ve embraced my ignorance and I will laugh at everyone who inevitably ridicules the FO’s decision.

Oh god I dread the day we hire someone. Half the board is gonna think the world is ending. Kind of like after every game, but ten times worse.
