The Brinson article's only sources are the Rapoport tweet that McCarthy is supposedly going to interview with the Jets and the Pelissero tweet that McCarthy isn't interested in the Cardinals job. The rest is speculation. And even Brinson doesn't say McCarthy is very interested in the Jets job.
I'm sure McCarthy likes Darnold. If he didn't he would refuse to interview here like he did with Arizona. But Cleveland is also interested in him and he may prefer Mayfield. He also may prefer Cleveland as a city. Or prefer working under Dorsey to working alongside Mac. Or some other reason I'm not considering.
He has probably the best leadership qualities over other candidates and obviously the most experience. My question is whether or not he'll run too traditional and conservative of an offense. There were a lot of reports that suggest Rodgers is the main reason the Packers had the offense they did and he butted heads with McCarthy because he was trying to be more conservative. I'm done with the Bowles Era. I do not want to run the clock out at the start of the 4th quarter up only 10 points. That's how to lose games. I want a non-stop aggressive offense.
I’m sure he likes Darnold, I’m thinking organizational structure is something that he might like as well, having the owners ear and being able to talk to him openly about the importance of an oline or skilled offensive playmakers may go along way. Or it could be a turnoff as well, when Mcarthy starts asking questions during his interview that reflects years of experience working with HOF QBs, and Maccagnan tells him he will only draft offensive linemen in 4 and 5th rounds like he was taught by Casserly, he might just walk out and say Cleveland here I come.
Agreed all the way. He would by far be the "safest" hiring in comparison to other names. But is that really the best for a young QB/team overall?
Since 2000 the NFL has had 3 multiple MVP QB's. Guess which won has the least SB appearances. Not winning SB with the best team in football multiple times doesn't spell great HC. Losing in the NFC championship game up 19 to 7 with 3 minutes to go is a huge red flag.
