The most concerning thing about CJ's comments is his statement that they won't consider any coach who wants full control. Why the fuck not? Who in the current organization - including the owners - are qualified to have ANY control? Based on his track record with acquiring players, Macc should have minimal input over player acquisitions, so getting an experienced HC and giving him control is exactly what they should do. But NOOOOOOOOO! Not the immortal football genius Chris Johnson! God forbid he would have to keep his ignorant little hands off the team! No, he needs to get someone who he can force to do whatever stupid idea he gets in his head. So we'll wind up with another first timer who has to learn OTJ, or a scrub like Caldwell who will be so grateful for getting ANOTHER chance to fail will kiss Chris's ass. This is shaping up to be the end of my rooting for this dysfunctional mess after 55+ years/
Based on CJ'c stupid assertion that they won't consider even interviewing any candidate that wants full control. we can rule out the Harbaughs most likely, and maybe McCarthy. So we'll be looking at another first-timer needing OJT for a couple of years to get up to speed. I'm at an age where I don't have that kind of time. Besides, if an experienced HC wanted full control why wouldn't you give it to him since the owners don't know what they;re doing and neither does Macc? Of course the problem us that the Johnsons don't know this, they think they're knowledgeable. But how smart was Chris to extend Macc and Bowles after 3 years of failure, only to wind up having to fire Bowles and should've fired Macc? I'm still holding out hope that somehow CJ comes to his senses and hires Jim Harbaugh (or John if he becomes available). If Tomlin shakes lose Id like him. I don't think McCarthy wants NY. Of the non-HCs, I guess Taub, Monken, Maybe Bieniemy. I'm wary of hiring HCs that were just fired from their previous HC job, like Gase. I think he should spend a year or two out of the HC spot and reflect on what went wrong before he grabs the reins again. And finally, and above all, it needs to be a guy who knows offense. We've had five straight defensive "geniuses" and what has that produced? Call me crazy, but maybe they should try something different.
I dont like them limiting themselves from any possibility that finds a solution for HC however i dont think its a big deal. 1.Alot of teams dont like to empower the whole operation to one individual not bc of power but rather that not many head coaches are good talent evaluators esp at every position. The Bellicheats,JJs & Tunas of the world are few & far between.Esp now where everything is specialized 2. Unless we’re courting Nick Sabine(Sarcasm) or bringing Jimmy Johnson out of retirement none of the current pool are really gonna be looking for that much power..including Harbaugh.I think Harbaugh just wants a GM he shares a vision w & can handle his quirks. 3.Could you imagine how bare boned, paralyzed & lifeless the football front office would be if the one man show doesnt workout? Might have to get Woody’s kid to grade some midwest linebackers All that matters is finding the right guy.If they do Mac & CJ look like geniuses. If not,Mac is gone & CJ is looking into one upping his brother in Wales
There are really no candidates that should be considered for that big of a roll. Literally not one candidate I have heard of would I consider giving full control of a franchise to. Including the immortal Jim Harbaugh
If either Harbaugh wanted it they should get it IMO. Aside from that, I'm not saying any of the candidates SHOULD have full control, but it's stupid to rule out considering someone if they want it. As I said, who in the current organization warrants more control than an experienced HC? If the owners were the Rooneys or Maras, maybe; or if the GM had a track record of even mediocre success, then the HC shouldn't get full control, But that's not what we have. We have the blind leading the blind, I want someone in charge who knows wtf they're doing, not learning on the job.
I thought he was great back in the Rex days. Wonder how it would have gone if the Jets chose him over Bowles.
Hes not in my top 5 but he was a high level asssistant on 2 super bowl teams, & whilevhe didnt bring it home hes won everywhere hes been.Nobody’s won w stafford, and he took those lions teams to 2 playoff births. For that team that is no small feat. Remember no SB winning coach has ever won another somewhere else.Hed come in hungry. But above all else? Of all the candidates including Mccarthy i think hed put together the best staff.
No one is getting more control. Mac isn’t getting anymore control than he already had and the coach will not have anymore control than a coach should have. Jim harbaughs I definitely wouldn’t give full control to, he’s kinda loose canon-ish ,doesn’t stick around long and has no rings ( a huge blank spot on his resume as far as I’m concerned) John, a little better resume, he did beat jim in the super bowl but we know who built the ravens. People need to chill with this “full control “ thing. That’s reserved for the true elite of the coaching world. Parcels, beli,Jimmy Johnson types. The harbaughs are not sitting at that table
Let's look at this a little differently. I believe the Head Coach is a full time job and believe that most, if not all, are putting in twelve hours a day from July to January at minimum. I also believe the GM has a full time job. He may not be putting in twelve hours a day but for most of the year he's probably doing over fifty a week, much more going into the draft and free agency. How can one guy do justice to both jobs or would he be mostly feeding his ego? I don't want the guy who is going to demand both jobs.
Most teams aren't as devoid of football sense as the Jets so they NEED someone who can impart a vision, and that might require giving them full control. How much worse could they do than the Johnsons and Macc? IDK what any of the candidates are looking for, control-wise, but if the Harbaughs or someone of that caliber wanted it, I say give it to them. I agree that all that matters is finding the right guy. I just don't trust the Johnsons or Macc to be able to determine if a never-been HC has what it takes.
The Lions dropped off big time without him this year. Caldwell is also one of the lions winningest coaches ever lol what are you talking about
I agree. Let me clarify what I consider "full control" which is not the same as doing both jobs. I mean it in the sense that if the HC wants certain players then they get them, If he has a philosophy and style of play, then he needs to be able to have the guys that fit it, and not be overruled by a GM - or owner - who doesn't have a clue.
Once again, we're in the dark; this can be read many ways. I read "full control" as that which a director of football operations would hold and can see why no coach should have that power. The problem with the current situation, which looks like it may continue, is that the only mediator in a disagreement between the coach and the GM appears to be the owner, who by all accounts, is not equipped to do so. The benefit this time would be in adding a coach with similar style and philosophies to the GM rather than bringing in two guys simultaneously with little or no regard to whether or not they can work together.
Ive said all along that the biggest benefit to Mac returning is doing the coaching search.Ill stand by it. He may not be a great GM but he isnt an idiot either.Hes well respected & connected within league circles. This isnt korn & ferry cold calling Mobile Alabama hotel rooms looking to cast a wide net. After watching Chris in the presser i was actually very impressed. He was direct, confident, informed & well spoken. This was not Woody & the quotes from the media paint a completely different picture. Im still sure theyll screw up somehow someway but i dont think this is strangers in a strange executive recruiter world
I agree, Chris Johnson came across as extremely caring and sincere. The problem is I just cannot understand how he could look at what Macc's done over the past four seasons and believe that he deserves to keep his job.
No, he and Gase would text each other at 3 AM.....they went back-and-forth all the time. Peyton gushed about him like he has no other OC ever. Elway may have been a bit miffed at the close relationship to the exclusion of Fox/Kubiak; Gase left for Chicago later on.
Honestly think that the Darnold pick saved him, at least in the short term. Johnson said something to the effect that the Darnold pick shows that Mac has a plan worth sticking with, so that pick basically bought him another couple of years. It is what it is.
Consider the possibility that Johnson and MacCagnan talk regularly and discuss those things that we find mysterious; they don't happen in a vacuum. Consider also that Johnson may be adding input and guiding MacCagnan along a path Johnson himself has chosen and others within the organization may have influenced both. Consider too, that when things haven't gone as you or I would have planned, MacCagnan may have satisfied his boss with explanations of why certain actions were taken or the boss may have directed those actions himself.
