Not in any way a draftnik, so I have no criticisms to make of anyone here. I would just point out that if the Jets had drafted Mahomes or Watson in 2017 they would have pretty much had no shot at Barkley in 2018, because even if the rookies hadn't played a snap the Jets would have been picking #6. Unless you think Mahomes or Watson would have led the team to a worse record than 5-11, which kind of contradicts the point of how good/great they've been right from the start.
Mmmmmm… Courtland Sutton. I would have absolutely loved to get that guy on the team. I picture him going along with Robby really well.
They traded up to get Darnold, right? They could've traded up for Barkley, although I really don't think they would've even tried. And they probably would've finished higher than 5-11, so it would've cost even more to trade up. But as long as we're playing "what if?", why not dream big?
I'm going to assume that not even the Jets would be so monumentally stupid as to trade up to get a running back at the #1 spot (remember, the Giants took Barkley at #2).
Trading up to get a RB of the caliber of Barkley, in and of itself, isn't "stupid", but spending what it would cost to move up to 1, wouldn't make any sense. For example, if the Jets were at 10 and the Giants had passed on Barkley and the Jets could trade up to a spot to get him in return for say two #2s, this years and next, plus their #10, I would make that trade. Having Barkley with Darnold would instantly make their offense playoff-caliber for the duration of their rookie contracts, To me that's worth it.
Again, it's not about Whiesnhunt vs Arians. It's about the Cards decline. It didn't happen as soon as Arians left as you claim. It began his last 2 seasons.
How bout we sign you up for Hackenberg Hanson Stewart overpaying Mevi$ and Fitz the receiver or LB who almost killed someone driving wrong way in Lincoln tunnel ...compare him with some other GMs and he fails miserably... You are just frothing at the mouth because he had 2 recent successes...
IMO these last few games have actually made more of a case for Mac to stay. His recent draft picks have been really good despite the coaching. Also Henry Anderson is playing so well (him for a 7th is sooo good).
Trading into the top two was not an option, it was well known before the draft the Browns and Giants were not moving. That said, we could have had the sixth pick and three seconds which sounds great. If you read the long break down, from Albert Brier iirc, about the Jets scouting Darnold you know it was a two year process where they tracked the QBs from this class. It’s almkst like they were set on taking a QB this year and didn’t really dig into the 2017 class.
Yeah, I know it wasn't possible for them to trade up to get Barkley, but the main gripe I have is not only losing Mahomes, but those picks. And yes, it really seemed like Macc was dead set on waiting until 2018 to draft a QB, no matter what - which is another reason he ought to be fired. Being that pigheaded isn't a good trait for a GM.
He picked the year to pick a QB. Not the year not to pick a QB. That Mahomes or Watson are playing great doesn’t change that. Would you have been happy if he somehow took Trubisky? Had he been there at 6? Since we’re doing woulda shoulda. He was, after all, the first QB taken. It wasn’t a good year for QBs. Maybe not so much now with 20-20 hindsight but that draft was like the 2019 draft. Is it possible Hebert turns out better than Mahomes? Unlikely. But possible.
No, I would not have been happy if he took Trubisky. But most analysts were surprise Trubisky went first. Macc screwed up by not taking Mahomes. It's really that simple.
Based on Maccagnan's draft record and his free-agent signings, both the pro- and anti-Maccagnan groups have good points. His record is a mixed bag. Here's what worries me. Given the team's undisciplined play, the failure to hold leads, and the general lack of a killer instinct, I believe the GM has to give a hard-eyed look at every player on the roster and decide who is or can become a winning player, and who can't. I'm talking as much about attitude and coachability as about talent. Can Maccagnan do this, or does he have too much of a vested interest in players he drafted or signed? Would it be better if the person scrutinizing the roster had no connection to the players? Sure, a lot of the problems with this year's team involve poor coaching, but it also seems that the players must share a large portion of the blame, and I wonder if some of the players have infected the locker room with a losing culture. I'm skeptical that a new coach alone is the answer, unless that coach has final say over personnel.
