That first paragraph is spot on. Also makes me wonder how good Leo is at all. Think about it, Adams, Goose etc got their 2-3 sacks per year when teams were throwing half as much as they are now. We’re now in a league we’re teams are throwing 2x as much and often times QB’s are holding onto it longer to throw deeper routes. 2 things that should absolutely increase sack numbers.. Yet he puts up the same amount of sacks they did with harsher rules
The draft should be like a Chinese gift exchange, where you can pick a player in the draft or take one off someone elses team!
Yeah I’ve watched him closely this game. He is too slow and keeps missing tackles because of it. He’s getting paid $14 million next year. No way he’s worth that.
I listened to the living legend Mike Francesa on the drive home yesterday. He said he'd be careful of paying this guy big money. He said he wouldn't pay him.
I don't see anyway this GM or any other GM can look at this guy and think he deserves to be one of the highest paid defenders in football. I see the Jets sending out this guy as one of their captains for the coin toss, he's in tv commercials, they use him in ad campaigns as one of the faces of the franchise which is why I'm terified this regime might be stupid enough to extend this guy at big dollars. I hope common sense prevails here. Let some other team IF such a team exists break the bank on this bum.
I am somewhat concerned because this GM drafted him and that scares me into believing he'll be more inclined to justify the pick by horribly overpaying him. I like Leo, the person. Seems like a good guy and doesn't appear to be outwardly loafing, ala Mo. But maybe this is the best of what he has to offer going forward. That is just not money well spent if the dollars get nuts...
So now in addition to Pro Football Talk you’re getting the rest of your NFL intel from....Mike Francesca? How about just watching football.
My opinion is that he's a solid player, but not a game changer like Watt or Donald and should not be paid as such. See, there's a middle ground here.
I totally agree with that. He’s not a scrub. He’s not a bum. He’s not a bust. That’s not a “middle ground” assessment. And as long as we’re adults and not doing 20-20 hindsight, he was still the correct pick.
Put Leo in a 4-3 as 3t sign clowney as a de and Leo will be worth his weight in gold. And that’s a lot of gold
That's my fear and I'm at the point where I want him gone. (BTW, Mack is the Bears pass rusher. Macc is the Jets GM. ) But I'm not gonna call him a lazy bum because he's not Watt.
Exactly where I put him but with that eerie feeling that letting him get away and thrive elsewhere under decent coaching is a very real possibility.
And I still, for the life of me, cannot see how getting rid of one of better players on the roster - which Williams undoubtedly is - makes the Jets a better team in the future. Give him what he needs to do better.
It’s the irrational dementia of some fans who, because we suck, want EVERYONE GONE! Williams is clearly one of our better players and as long as it’s not a Mo Wilk type contract we need to extend him.
I think most would agree that he is not worth the 14M he is owed next year. Navigating the Salary Cap website, it looks like his contract is not guaranteed for next season. Could there be a chance that he isn't brought back next season?
He's expendable. You can get someone to produce like he does anywhere. Hell, Macc flipped a late rounder to the Colts and got a better player. I would trade him in the offseason. The perfect candidate for a trade. He would bring in a nice return based on the perception of him, his base salary jumps significantly and its a contract year.
