Unless teams are usually averse to picking college coaches, so the ones they do pick are biased toward being good.
you are simply forgetting a lot more failures. Chip Kelly, Lane Kiffin, Greg Schiano, Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis, Mike Riley, Rich Brooks... on top of Spurrier, Petrino, Saban which you listed. All of them since the 1990s sucked ass. [Going back to the 1970s or something doesn't make much sense so I didn't.] the only ones since the 1990s to succeed - Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, Switzer, Harbaugh, Coughlin. I would argue that Harbaugh, Carroll, Coughlin are slightly different since they had a lot of NFL experience. And Switzer inherited an unbelievably talented roster. It's a long shot that a college coach will find success as recent history shows. And some of the names here that people are listing, are inexperienced even for college football or running gimmick offenses that probably wont succeed in the pro game. I'm not seeing Kirk Ferentz, 20 year college coach with an NFL offense and NFL experience listed. I'm seeing Matt Campbell and Lincoln Riley. HUGE question marks there.
With Ohio St. putting up 62 points (and winning) vs. Michigan today, I wonder if that might make Harbaugh more likely to leave Michigan for the NFL. It could work in our favor.
Looks like Urban Meyer will be leaving Ohio St so Harbaugh may see an opportunity to beat them next year. Could entice him to stay. Don't think he wants his legacy to be 4 consecutive losses to Ohio State.

Why puke? Harbaugh is a proven winner. He has a ton of experience and is an offensive-minded HC. He wouldn't put up with the sloppy play, penalties, and lack of discipline. He would have the team focused and ready to play each week, and would make adjustments in game and know how to manage the game and clock and wouldn't be ultra-conservative.
Bruce Arians will not come to the Jets. One, he's retired, and is too old (66 years old). Second, and perhaps more importantly, he's a very close friend of Todd Bowles. He's isn't gonna take a job where his very good (best friend?) was just fired.
That’s why I asked the question of failures; I genuinely couldn’t remember them. I would argue Chip Kelly’s initial success wouldn’t qualify him as a failed college coach. He eventually failed for a myriad of reasons not tied to simply being a college coach the same as many pro coaches eventually fail. I wouldn’t qualify Carrol as a college coach, but Harbaugh I would say qualifies as one.
Xs and Os aside, I love his leadership skills. In the NFL, the HC has to be able to establish a culture and have the players buy in. He seems to have that quality about him.

He has a very strong reputation for holding others accountable. He's adapted his system based off his personnel, his former OC is also over in Indy as the TE coach. I still think a new GM, based off a new organization structure would be the best way to bring in Campbell, have to wonder, does he come here with a lame duck GM

After he left, his replacement, Jim Tonsula, led the Niners to a 5-11 record in 2015. Michigan Wolverines (2015-2018) Overall: 38-13 2015: 10-3 2016: 10-3 2017: 8-5 2018: 10-2 The Jets should be so lucky as to have a HC who "blows" like that.
