I walked past Steve Phillips today. Didn't see Omar Minaya yet, though.

Vicente Padilla agrees to $34 million deal for 3 years with the Rangers.

Padres close to 1 or 2 year deal with Greg Maddux.

Zito to the Mets chances go up greatly.

Whoa, I've just traveled back in time to 2002. That, or the Rangers are fucking idiots.

More like Zito breathes a sigh of relief. Texas would have been a great place to go to ruin his career, and if they were the highest bidder you know that would be the case. Although, it would be what he gets for having Boras as his agent.

Also, in my opinion, the supposed offer by the Rangers for 6 years/$100 million, is probably just a smokescreen by Boras, if anything.

06:56 PM - News: Mets Close to Trading for Burgos

    ...posted by Matthew Cerrone...

The Mets are in talks with the Royals regarding a swap of RHP Ambiorix Burgos in exchange for a ‘pitching prospect,’ reports Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com.

…thanks to wink and franco for the link…

In 73 innings last season, Burgos, 22, was 4-5 with a 5.52 ERA. In his previous season for the Royals, he posted a 3.98 ERA while striking out 65 batters in 63 innings.

I want to win THIS year, and I'd mortgage the entire "future" for it.
    Lastings and Heilman for Manny.
Sign Zito. Sign Lugo. Sign Gagne (if healthy, more than enough pickup from Heilman trade). Shit, I'd even sign Piazza to backup Lo Duca.
But that's just me. Feeling spendy today and daydreaming out loud.

millege and Heilman isn't enough for Manny, especially since WEEI Boston says the Red Sox rejected LaRoche and Broxton, saying it would take 3 of the top 6 dodgers prospects to get it done. Mets don't have that kind of farm system

Edit- Maddux to Padres 1 yr 10 mil

Fine. See ya Humber or see ya Pelfry too.
    Damage to the future? Substantial.
Green Lantern's cares about that? None.

I'd be just as happy winning one world series next year and watching boston smoke the yankees for the next five with our farmboys.

This could be a good deal, depending on who the "pitching prospect" is. Seems like they're trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice and "fix" this Julio clone.

The playoffs are essentially a crapshoot, probably the worst team to make the postseason last year ended up winning the World Series because they got some timely pitching. If you consistently put together a team good enough to make the postseason you're probably going to win one sooner or later.

"Loading up for a run" at the expense of the future seems like an exceedingly stupid prospect in baseball.

Mets get Ambiorix Burgos from the Royals for Brian Bannister.

In 2005, despite only pitching 60 innings, Burgos managed to be 10th in the league in wildpitches, with 8. In '06, he had 11 WP's in 70-someodd innings.

Not quite sure what to think of this one...

Bannister was not "great." Do we need to get 3rdand15 in here to tell you about Bannisters unbelievably high WHIP. He was a time bomb waiting to explode out there.

Time will tell on this deal. The Mets have/had a glut of young back of the rotation SPs so losing Bannister is no big deal. I'm not crazy about Burgos though, I guess he has similar stuff to Julio except he's even wilder. I don't know if it's possible to "fix" a guy that has had a BB/9 around 5 for his entire professional career.

This may also be a prelude to Heilman getting traded, although I hope that doesn't happen.
