It's not just about need, it's about acquiring more talent. Jets might get a 2nd tier pass rusher in FA, they should still look at acquiring another one early if there isn't a blue chip talent available at LT in the draft.
My ideal scenario is we sign a blue chip FA pass rusher and draft a blue chip LT. Clowney or Lawrence will do.
i'd rather handle that in free agency if possible. unless we somehow wind up with a chance to get a top pass rusher (which i doubt as the top 2 should go top 5 as of now) i'd rather grab a top OT and if those 2 are gone, a top WR would be nice. i really want an offensive heavy draft
Not to give your hopes up but we won't have much of a chance of signing those 2 guys. I would love Lawrence too. Cowboys will have the cap space. I'd take your scenario easily tho
This isn't how the draft works, you dont key in on 1 side of the ball. Both need work, obviously the O needs more work, but you don't severely reach for O players especially LTs. If the O player isn't available, you don't reach.
It's always so painful when you see people suggest reaching for a player solely because they don't play defense. Happens every year from a few people on this site and the only thing worse than their original post is their follow ups explaining it.
If you have an offensive player and a defensive player rated relatively close, you can make a decision to favor the offense. If you have a defensive player rated much higher you don't reach for the offensive player. You can't just go into a draft saying "we're going LT, WR, G and RB irrespective of value".
The more I think about this, the more I think Mac was right to not make any trades. I'll bet if I went back and looked at the comments regarding Sam starting 3 games in 10 days at the beginning of the season that many of the posters who thought it would be a good learning experience for him are now saying that he could be hurt by having no talent around him for a couple of games. If having to start 3 games in 10 days didn't hurt him and supposedly helped him, then having to play a few games with his starting WRs and RB out are not gonna hurt him. Injuries are a part of life in the NFL, and few teams have such great depth that there is little or no drop off between starters and backups. With limited practice in pads, play is going to be sloppier, and there will probably continue to be more dropped passes and WRs failing to get open. QBs have to learn to adjust/adapt to backups and still find a way to get it done. I'm sure that it must be horribly frustrating for a QB to throw a great pass only to see the WR drop it. The thing is he can learn from the present situation. Maybe it helps him become a better leader by getting in his receivers' faces like Brady or Manning, maybe he gets them to stay after practice for additional reps with him. Maybe he works for better ball placement where the receiver likes to catch the ball or to fit it in a tighter window. If nothing else it can help to make him mentally tougher. With some of the injured players coming back, and the new ones like Rishard Matthews getting worked in, the Jets should be OK and shouldn't have wasted a draft pick or picks on rental players that they may not be able or want to re-sign.
No one said anything about "reaching" for offensive players. That is solely 101's and your projection.
Exactly. I haven't seen anyone advocating reaching regardless of rating. The thing is one doesn't necessarily have to stay put and take the "BPA" one can trade down or trade up to get a player that one likes and that should help the team. For instance, if the Jets are drafting #6 again in the 2019 draft, and the only LT the Jets rated that high is already taken, and the next highest one is ranked in the mid-teens, the Jets could try to find a trading partner, trade down take that next best LT, and then use the additional pick(s) to take other players they like. They don't necessarily have to stay put and take a player just because he's the BPA, especially if they don't have a need at that position. When a team needs an LT, they pretty much HAVE to plan on drafting one, as prime LTs just don't become available in FA unless they are older and near the end of their careers, have had serious injury issues, or off the field/character issues. So in that sense, one can go into a draft saying we're going LT. It may mean that one has to overpay to get that LT, but if one truly needs an LT, then it is just one's luck and the cost of doing business. In the Jets' case, however, they have had opportunities to draft LTs during Mac's tenure. He tried, but failed to trade up for Tunsil. There have been other LTs like Spriggs, Robinson, and a few others that he could have tried to trade down/up for and he didn't. He prioritized other positions. If any of the elite pass rushers are available in FA in 2019 it will be a rarity, because usually they aren't. Like QB and LT, one almost always has to get them via the draft, so one has to prioritize those positions and have plans for addressing those positions.
Absolutely. To me, it's formula based. 75% BPA; 25% Need. Case and point, the Raiders took a LT in the draft, Kolton Miller. He's been pretty bad this year, could've potentially had him in the 2nd round. They let Derwin James (SS/ FS / part time pass rusher) slide to a division rival and he might be the DROTY. They needed both positions, but they should have taken James.
Uhhh.... "If there isn't a top tier pass rusher or OT there, I want a WR" That's the definition of reaching unless one of the next 5 best players on the board is a WR. And in this draft that's probably not going to be the case where we're picking.
lmfao, you kiddin right? Please go back to the 2017 draft, back to the draft forum, where I was getting bashed about wanting to take a safety and a large # of Jet fans didn't even pick a player, they just wanted a player on O. I said Jets should take Adams or Hooker. I'll take Adams and Darnold, thank you very much.
Uhhhhhhh. No it isn't!!! You are "assuming" that the poster meant take a WR at the Jets' spot regardless. He didn't say that. He could easily have meant taking a WR if there was one ranked that high by the Jets or trading down and taking a WR. If you're referring to the poster I think you're referring to, I know for certain that he is not an advocate of "reaching" and that he did mean take a WR if one was rated that highly by the Jets or to trade down to get a WR.
i'm not advocating reaching for need. i rarely do that. the only time i was ok with that was last year becuase we needed a QB so if darnold was off the board i was ok reaching for one of the other QBs. i'm just saying that where we are pciking there should be either a good OT or good WR and both are need i'd prefer the OT but if both are gone, i'd be happy with the WR. it looks like BPA will be a DT and i don't want though. lots of DTs in the top 15 right now on most big boards
If Darnold and Mayfield were off the board, would Rosen be a reach? Absolutely not. I also disagree that BPA would be DT. There will be a number of EDGE rushers in this draft in the first round that are very talented. 75% BPA, 25% Need Jonah Williams or Greg Little are the blue chip OT talents. After that, I don't see another first round tackle right now that is.
Agreed. Let's not forget about this signing. He's been a solid receiver the past few seasons and can definitely contribute. He could be a Kearse-like pickup
I used to think your way but more and more I think I/you are wrong. the biggest thing is that "best player available" appears to be a bullshit concept. It's completely made up. There is no such thing as "best player" as these guys havent played a down of NFL football. So its just an opinion. Now that might be obvious. Like duh, you know that. But were talking about setting a draft board here and you are suggesting placing 75% emphasis on something completely made up. Hopes/dreams stuff. Under any other circumstances that kind of logic would be seen as wacko. If you were picking stocks for a wealthy person's portfolio, for example, and you said diversification is not important. I'm gonna pick the best return on investment and he said - "ok, but how the hell do you know what is the 'best return on investment'?" and you said it was just an opinion.. you would be kicked out of the room!! -- Look back at the 2015 Jets draft. This was a Jets team desperate for playmakers on offense and without a decent edge pass rusher since Abraham was traded like 10 years beforehand. They are sitting there with pick number 6 and a playmaker like Todd Gurley and a dynamic edge rusher like Vic Beasley are sitting right there for them. Setting aside all the draft nerd stuff the fugazi "best player available" stuff, and just looking at it like someone who doesn't even follow the draft, shouldn't the Jets have been psyched about that choice? They need a playmaker and a edge rusher and 2 worthy guys at both spots are right there for them!!! Instead they choose the defensive tackle in Leonard Williams because they overthink it and call him "the best player available." But he WASN'T the best player available. That was just their opinion. SO now they still have 2 major holes in playmaker and edge rusher only because they hoped they got a good player at a position that wasn't even a problem. To me that's the wrong way to do things. Keep it simple. You need something? Try to fix it.
depends on your opinion. Personally i felt every QB was a reach at 3 outside of darnold, but i was ok reaching for one due to extreme need and positional importance. Qbs are almost always drafted higher then they should be due to the importance of the position. as far as posiitonal goes i assume the jets are picking in the 10-15 range as it stands now. of course that could change. if i eliminate the top 5 as i doubt any of them fall far enough and look at 6-15 here is the breakdown 6 DTs 1 Lber (non pass rusher) 1 OT 1 CB 1 WR so to me at least as it stands now since shit changes alot leading up to the draft, the likelt BPA will be a DT now if i look at 16-20 1 LB (edge rusher) 1 OT 1 WR 1 TE 1 FS obviously i don't ant the safety and not thrilled at taking a TE but the WR, OT, and LB are all good options for us but could be drafted higher due to teams passing on lots of DTs due to their needs as well. my order of preference would be OT, WR, Pass Rusher, TE, no interest in the FS. I think we can address pas rusher in FA making it not a need by draft day
